Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Solid and Fluid Mechanics the students should be able to

-formulate mechanical engineering problems as mathematical models.

-use advanced topics regarding mathematical modelling as well as computational and experimental techniques relevant for the specialized tracks.

-show insight and ability to work in teams and collaborate in groups with different compositions.

-be able to give written and oral presentations of their conclusions and knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Programme layout

The masters programme in Solid and Fluid Mechanics consists of two compulsory corses in the first quarter (Mechanics of solids and fluids, Computations in mechanics) and the compulsory "Project course" in quarter four. Besides that, there are courses in quarter two and three that are compulsory for each track.

7. What do you think of the programme layout?

32 svarande

Rather poor»1 3%
OK»16 50%
Good»13 40%
Very good»1 3%

Genomsnitt: 3.37

- pjoject course couldn"t be worse, so thats good» (Poor)
» (OK)
- The compulsory course in quarter four causes some problems if you are on an exchange program during year four since it then coincides with the thesis project. » (OK)
- More analytical stuff, I enjoyed Fundamental Structural Dynamics the most» (Good)
- I think the courses are ordered in a logical way. The compulsory courses were good.» (Good)
- Good, but the "Project course" was not good.» (Good)

8. Is it a good thing to have 3 mandatory courses?

There should be less»2 6%
It is OK»24 80%
There should be more»4 13%

- working load of two courses is high enough. I study MS of Mechanics and I can say it is impassible to have 3 in each quarter» (There should be less)
- The numbers is OK but some of the courses must be revised like the course "Project in applied Mechanics" which was not successful to achieve its expected goals. » (It is OK)
» (There should be more)
- I think companies want to know what skills the student have when they have followed this master programme.» (There should be more)

9. Should there be a more pronounced emphasis on BOTH solid and fluid mechanics?

This could be achieved by further compulsory courses for all programme students within both fields. Expected outcome would be engineers with better overall knowledge in both fields, at the expense of deeper knowledge within each specialisation.

- i think it should be possible to chose courses from both fields or from the one that seems most interesting» (There should be less)
» (It is OK as it is)
- it was good last year but I think it is good as it is in the new Applied mechanics master. with four compulsory courses including CFD and a structural dynamics course. » (It is OK as it is)
- Thinks it"s better if its the students choice, since the outcome will be far better if your interested in what your doing. A guidance over predicted future needs from industry could be helpful in the course selection.» (It is OK as it is)
- No more that what we have now. I think more focus in each field is more reasonable» (It is OK as it is)
- The new way is god where all students take courses in CFD and FEM.» (There should be more)

10. Do you miss a course or a topic in the master programme?

- Combustion» (Yes)
- it could have been more mandatory oral presentations, i managed to slip through but i realise i need much more practice in that field. it might be hard for some students but in the long run and with the right support it will help those persons, maybe with a possibility to present in front of smaller groups » (Yes)
- Fluid structure interaction» (Yes)
- Wind energy, biomechanics» (Yes)
- I missed a composite course.» (Yes)
- Aerospace engineering orbit mechanics» (Yes)
- thermodynamics advanced mathematics» (Yes)
- I would like a course that goes deeper into the finite element method, that covers things you meet in practice like choosing the right element type, mesh generation etc. » (Yes)

11. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

- Project in applied mechanics» (Yes)
- i think it already is though: computations in mechan ics» (Yes)
- The compressible flow course was OK, but a little uninspiring. Exam was too easy, didn"t really study to it.» (Yes)
- The purpose of the project course was good, but it failed in many ways. This one should be revised. Material Mechanics was a good course too, but could be made more interesting.» (Yes)
- "Project in applied Mechanics" must be revised.» (Yes)
- This mandatory "MTS" course for swedish students is just crap that prevents you from taking an interesting course. At least reduce the credit for it. Don"t see the benefit of it today, but maybe in the future... Should be noted that it"s not a specific course for the programme.» (Yes)
- I think the material mechanics course was to specific.» (Yes)
- the course "computations in mechanics" is the only course about mathematics in mechanics, however its syllabus is not very good, I feel it should be revised not removed.» (Yes)
- "Project Course"» (Yes)

- I don"t think that we should focus on that. We are all here because we are interested in technology and then the groups shouldn’,t be put together just to mix gender and culture.» (OK)

28. Do you believe an internship system would have any impact on student"s choice of masters programme?

In the future, there are prospects of enhanced collaborations with the industry at the end of the masters studies. For example, a few of the masters students at this program may be guaranteed summer job and/or a short term project employment with Volvo.

So, do you think such a system would make more students choosing this programme?

- Think people choose program depending on their interests rather than the possibility to maybe get a summer job.» (No, not at all)
» (Yes definitely)
- THIS MUST BE DONE, SOUNDS GREAT!» (Yes definitely)
- Very good idea.» (Yes definitely)

29. What should definitely be preserved?

- Fundamental Structural dynamics ! »
- jim brozelius, peter thorstensson, thomas abrahamsson, magnus ek, shahaab ..., fredrik larsson, mats anders. people that you feel is there to help. i dont belive one bit in teachers that for some reason need to say to the student that he or she should already know the stuff that they are asking about. i wouldn"t ask if i already knew the answer »
- the assignment and projects of the courses»

30. What should definitely be changed?

- More commercial software. Matlab is good for theory, but you would also like to know a little bit more commercial software than one or classes.»

31. Additional comments

- Think it"s a nice program. Maybe a little too theoretical sometimes though. Understand that the reality can be complex(more than course content). But one can at least show/tell/mension some of the applications and say how they are simplified/modelled to fit into school book examples and then just calculate the simplified example. In other words:give the application as a preface to the problem. It would be nice to come to a future job and see a real thing and then realize what simplifications that has to be made in order to apply my theories. Think you get the idea... Study visits and labs are appreciated.»
- Studied abroad last year, so I have actually only been taking part of the courses this semester. But so far so good.»
