The Speakers

5. How did you find the the information provided by the following speakers?*

In therms of usefulness and whether the presentation was worth time.

Matrisfråga

- If questions are mandatory, I´,d prefer a "Do not know"/"Do not remember"-alternative. I also suggest this evaluation is sent out closer to the Introduction day.»
- Alf-Eric"s part was mostly nothing new but he has a charismatic delivery.»
- The information provided by DOMB was good.»
- Liked Generic Skills (Sofia Månsson)* Then what? Generic skills and Two possible career trajectories for Chalmers PhD’,,,s (Johan Piscator, Alexander Dmitriev)*»
- Tell us more about what is compulsory for us, and not for the next years students»
- det mesta visste jag ju innan...»
- A-kassa should be mentioned by someone (It may be evident for swedish citizens but is not evident at all for others, and it´,s very inconvenient if one can´,t find a job immediately after the PhD and did not have A-kassa.)»
- The opening adress (or introduction to Chalmers) was nice, but not perhaps useful. The second half of the morning (with areas of advance, generic skills, "then what?" and sustainable working life) did not seem relevant at all for me.»
- Johan Piscator - Ok (neither poor nor useful) Alexander Dmitriev - Very useful -> Alexander showed with passion when and why certain things have happened during his academic career. This was really impressive and good to follow Johan was more uninspired and could not show in the same way the linkage to his PhD time»
- More substantial information. Like these are the mandatory courses, this is what you need to do during your PhD etc.»

The Ph.D Introduction Day

6. After this introduction day, how well do you feel you are informed about:*

Matrisfråga

- It was a lot of talk about the new system and the new mandatory courses, but it could have been useful with some extra information about what courses that are mandatory for us at present.»
- Sustainability at the workplace needs to be more inspiring. Rules and regs only give the impression of requirements not successes and possibilities. Why not inspire us to make more sustainable decisions at the work place. Present successes... In 2010, we reduced energy use by xyz... We reduced waste to incineration by xx by increasing recycling and xyz. Make sure to turn off lights in offices... We have a program to encourage cycling and mass transit to work. Stuff like that would be nice and more interesting to see.»
- Knew these things beforehand, not due to the introduction day...»
- Not because of the introduction day, mostly.»
- more discussions about typical problems with PhD students working situation would have been helpful, e.g. stress, uncertainty, frustration»
- Life after PhD is unpredictable, that is pretty clear.»

8. Do you have any suggestions for improving the introduction day for next year?

- Make it more brief please»
- how about a day for people who has already studied at chalmers and another one for new students? to focus on right things...»
- Maybe make it more compact»
- Find out who is in the room and what he/she needs. PhD-students are not a mass, but individuals. Design a programme that fills the needs of the audience, not of central Chalmers. If this "course" is mandatory, you have to receive credit for it. Speakers need to improve their presentation skills regarding ppt, language and enaging with the audience. »
- No salad in the sandwiches. Everything else was instead well arranged»
- Prof. Dimitriev is a very interesting presenter, but I really didn"t see the point of listening to advertisements for becoming a patent attorney. I understand it is good to think about the future already now, but I already have a general idea of what I want to do, therefore listening to two former PhD students not in my subject was a waste of my time. Areas of Advance could have been summed up in less than half of the time.»
- If one has studied at chalmers before for five years, these things are quite well-known and I would consider the indroduction day unneccesary. The meeting at the department with HR was much more useful and could possibly replace the introduction day?»
- Remove it or shorten it.»
- Was good :)»
- Distribute booklets with this information»
- more concrete stuff, like the courses WE have to take..maybe talk about how the administrative portal works»
- Talk more about what courses PhD students have to take THIS year, and not only for future years. Maybe talk a bit less about the areas of advance since there seems to be not so much concrete relations to us PhD students. »
- providing some useful documents/brochures »
- More (or only) general information and less about specific research areas and what I would call empty talk.»
- The introduction day is adapted very much to PhD students who continue directly from e.g. master studies. For those who are industrial PhD students and may have worked already several years in the industry, the content is not that much relevant. I would suggest to split the current introduction day into two parts - 1) that covers the generic information about beeing PhD student at Chalmers (which is interesting for all) and 2) a second part which is aligned to your background. For sure it is not possible to cover all situations. But, there is no topic specifically adjusted to the needs of industrial PhD students, who often "sit between two chairs" and have two manage responsibilities from their employers and Chalmers.»
- more practical and useful information is needed»
- Shorter program. Little of importance to me or my future was relevant as I do not see a PhD as a career move, but as an important aspect of knowledge development. Take out the career part, people at this level of study surely must have their own sources for people in their field doing inspiring work, no need for alumn to come and talk, makes it feel like Chalmers needs to prove there is work after a completed PhD - but we"re already here, we"ve already decided we want to pursue this!»
- Social activity, maybe lunch or dinner together with new fellows and represantatives»
- Maybe it is a good idea to give practical information as an employed person in Chalmers like Primula, resräkning, vacation etc.»

9. Other comments to the Ph.D Introduction Day?

- I think the speakers that talked about life after the PhD was somewhat unneccessary since we all have so different project focus»
- Why is it mandatory I indicate my gender on this questionnaire? »
- The intro day would be worth more immediately at the beginning of the phd.. After weeks and months the value dissipates fast. Doesn"t seem like something that (in its current state) should hinder someone from licentiate.»
- Coffee is good to have during coffee breaks.»
- if you provide food, you should provide something for all, e.g. even special diets»
- a little more interaction with each other would have been nice. it was very bad that the jobfair was just outside the room»
- Except for the information about Chalmers, the student union and the mandatory courses I don"t understand why the day mandatory.»
