Goals and fullfilment of goals

The overall purpose is to provide all students, regardless of their subsequent choice of master´,s programme and design studios, with a foundation and an ability to creatively and critically consider and reflect on questions related to the planning, design and management of the built environment in regard to sustainable development. To independently seek knowledge and information from different sources, as well as to reflect upon the implications of the vision of sustainable development in relation to architecture and planning, constitute important parts of the course.

The purpose is, moreover
- to give an orientation about global challenges concerning environmental degradation, climate change and development issues
- to provide an orientation and an understanding of different perspectives on sustainable development
- to present different approaches to the implementation of the call for sustainable development within the planning, design and management of the built environment at different levels (global–,local) and in different settings
- to encourage critical reflection regarding what the notion sustainable development entails for the planning, design and management of the built environment and for professional practices within these fields

- I think the course should have been more interactive» (Rather good)
- The group was rather large for lecture. too big to have a decent discussion with the lecturers» (Rather good)
- a week for the first group of compulsory literature (15 articles and films) is very short. only some of the student really managed to go through all of them. you can"t think about the articles if there"s such amount of them but on the other hand it was a chllenge :-)» (Rather good)
- There was very little time left at the end of lectures for questions/comments» (Rather good)
- Good with planned time for litterature studies. Badly planned sometimes with fex 45 min lit. studies, you can hardly start reading on this time. Films can be showed for the whole class at the same time.» (Rather good)
- I am not used to many breaks, but I believe is good to relax a little bit.» (Very good)
- Excellent planned.» (Very good)
- The study visit an 1 tonne house was a disappointment, really unsufficient and unenthusiastic guiding and not in english. a-hus should feel ashamed. else, the study visits were good!» (Very good)

- The lectures were really uninspiring for most part, (although the canadian was great). » (Very little)
- It was good to see what is actually being done here in sweden towards sustainability. » (Rather large)
- most of the lectures were very very very good, but there are as well a few that were a disaster in my opinion. for example the One Tonne Life lecture» (Rather large)
- Maybe there was sometimes repetitions between some lecturers, about basic facts and statistics, but I understand it was to introduce their topic so it is probably not a big problem.» (Rather large)
- Although far from all lectures held desirable quality. » (Rather large)
- I still think many of the lectures, especially the first week, said exactly the same thing, and I felt that was quite unnessecary to repeat the point so many times.» (Rather large)
- It wasn"t much that was new to me, but I felt like lots of things "fell into place".» (Rather large)
- Updated the knowledge, and added new view points» (Rather large)
- Mainly the lecturers gives good examples of different angles to llok at sustainable development. Maybe a discussion about the lectures could be good giving an oportunity to understand the strength and weaknesses of their arguments/points of view.» (Rather large)

- The films were nice, and made us reflect» (Rather little)
- en del hade jag sett sedan tidigare. många av filmerna tyckte jag visade väldigt alternativa metoder som jag mest kände mig lite förvirrad av.» (Rather little)
- It would have been good enough to watch the movies in the VM or VB lecture rooms.» (Rather large)
- Cities on speed presented at the filmfestival were really interesting to introduce the political issue of sustainable development.» (Rather large)

- I only visited the house made from the field and the forest.» (Rather little)
- better examples on sustainability would be useful. » (Rather little)
- The study visit to the One Tonne Life Demonstration House was presented only in swedish which was not going to be a bad at all only if I knew swedish. ....:(» (Rather large)
- I think the study visits are important because there is so little that text and images can translate the sense of place and presence of buildings. I think there could be visits in change of reading material.» (Rather large)
- The study visit an 1 tonne house was a disappointment, really unsufficient and unenthusiastic guiding and not in english. a-hus should feel ashamed. else, the study visits were good!» (Rather large)

- It was to much compulsory literature in my opinion. Some of the articles were not so good in my opinion. For example the one about zero carbon cities. They said that they would design a city that would not emit GHGs but they did not say in detail how they would do that other than with renewable energy sources and "better" planning.» (Rather large)
- TED-talks and other video materials were much appreciated.» (Rather large)
- Good with seminars» (Rather large)
- Well some of the material were good, like the TED talks.» (Rather large)
- Good that it was all gathered, reading material is appreciated» (Rather large)
- nice choice of the materials but for the first part I felt that I"m reading always the same things and I got a little bit bored.I also missed more good examples, there were mostly facts and figures» (Very large)
- There were a lot to read, but a good selection of many views of the subject.» (Very large)
- Många texter i kompendiet och på hemsidan behandlade samma saker och var för övergripande. » (Very large)

- I wish there were more seminars that were a bit more focused and less general» (Rather little)
- For the first seminar it was too much textes. I think the quality of the discussions had been better if it was possible to focus on fewer texts» (Rather little)
- I think it is good to see the perspectives of the fellow students. The seminars weren"t very structured on our behalf but that was maybe alright. » (Rather large)
- the second seminar should have more specific description. most of the students just talked about what the article was about. I exctracted the information and prepared a presentation about the information. this way we can learn about the article by not reading it which was the intent I think.» (Rather large)
- The second seminar could be earlier in order to mature our idea for the course assignment.» (Rather large)
- I was chosen chairman both sessions, and consider that very valuable for me. Otherwise I don"t think the seminars contributed so much for my learning process.» (Rather large)
- We got a really good discussion in our group.» (Rather large)
- Good to discuss in such a relaxed environment, although I think the last seminar were schedueled a little bit late.., everyone just wanted to finish off the paper at that point.» (Rather large)
- Good incitament to read and reflect. Also good to get other peoples point of view, as the final assignmemt is individual» (Rather large)
- They widen the number of questions to be addressed.» (Rather large)
- jättebra! men jag förstod inte varför gruppdiskussion och presentation av rapport skulle vara i andra grupper då man hade lärt känna gruppen och fått igång en dialog» (Rather large)
- The group discussions where really really valuable! They gave you time and opportunity to reflect and speak about all these issues. Great to have the compulsury litterature to the first seminar, I read almost all of it. The seminars combined with everything else, and the build up of the course made it extremely easy to write the report. It was harder to say what you didnt want to write. GREAT to have the same group twice. » (Very large)
- Very nice oportunity to know how your classmates think.» (Very large)
- The seminars where great, especially with the mixing of the groups. Many different opions came up based upon cultural backgrounds.» (Very large)

- I excpected it to give more, or maybe there was very few good examples...» (Very little)
- It was a little bit good to have done a project already before the report, so you had looked at the internet. But we had very little discussion in the new group. » (Rather little)
- It was good that this forced you to chose a project and by doing that it was easier to understand what really did matter. But the discussions were rather lame. I made another choice after the group discussion.» (Rather little)
- The discussion in my group was rather quiet and people where not very interested in making discussions, too bad! It could have been a great opportunity to discuss!» (Rather little)
- This was very useful since a part of the personal assignment is presenting an example project.» (Rather large)
- Det var svårt att hitta bra ämnen att prata om, mer än att diskutera arkitekturen..» (Rather large)

- The seminars where the best forum for the learning process. » (Rather little)
- This assignment is mostly needed for you to evaluate the quality of the course (ie a very important thing to keep)» (Rather little)
- The course assignment was very challenging. I think it is good to form a personal strategy and present it. » (Rather large)
- It felt like a really good way to consider the subject of sustainability in a future strategy, and I esp. learnt a lot by comparing my own strategy to an project of an office. » (Rather large)
- Always good to really sit down and summarize your thoughts after such a wide ranging course» (Rather large)
- vet dock inte om jag tyckte att postern var ett hjälpmedel. » (Rather large)
- It was nice to have to formulate a strategy. That was personal and where nothing was "right". » (Very large)
- It"s important to write down the own thoughts - so better get in mind arguments for later discussions etc.» (Very large)
- It is very interesting, it makes you think a lot. About the problematic, about your contribution ...» (Very large)
- absolutely! you put down your own point of view and really start to think about the topic.» (Very large)
- It was really interesting to confront ideas. Lots of questions then grew up in my mind.» (Very large)

- We sort of had the same course the last year of my bachelor degree here at chalmers, so it was all old news for me.» (Bad)
- GREAT COURSE very inspirational. Överlärning, you feel like youve had so much information in different ways (sometimes the feeling was that the lecturers repeated each other but ofcourse they didnt) it feels that I remember a lot!» (Very good)
- this course was the right start up point for my selected studies. I believe it evoke some very interesting questions, and it helped me look in a various of different problems, possible solutions etc. » (Very good)
- New IMPORTANT experience in my architectural education. Sustainable development doesn"t play a role at my home university in Germany.» (Very good)
- I just want to suggest that maybe all the impressions to inform us about the programme, schedule, they are too much. For me the information in the course webpage is enough to keep be organized. Sometimes you get confused with too many papers, and probably is a waste of paper.» (Very good)
- Good balance between the different parts.» (Very good)
- Might be the best course so far» (Very good)
- Before I came to Chalmers. I have should choouse my courses. I couldn"t realize that this lecture has a big potential to change my view of sustainability. Before I took this course I considered about sustainability only in terms of the conservation of natural. Now, I can understand that the primary problem is not conservation, is the sustain our(nature and human) existence in time. » (Very good)

13. What should be preserved for next year?

- Everything. 80% närvaro, seminars, compulsary litterature, the build up of first a picture of the "situation" then ways to be as an architect. Good guiding questions to the seminars and report. »
- nothing i can think of!»
- There is a movie called Water the Great Mystery by Saida Medvedeva and Vasiliy Anisimyv which may be interesting to be presented, just as a mind breaking view of how much we still don"t know»
- The entire corse»
- I think the assignment was the strongest part. Working on the assignment was more important than the reading and should have put more focus on that.»
- The diversity of different lectures. The small groups to the assignment presentation were great. There ist much time to discuss all issues on an individual scale.»
- All good!»
- Seminars, Group discussions, the hole structure of the programme is OK.»
- guest lecturers seminars»
- The very open final assignment. That you have the possibility to write about things relevant to your future profession.»
- I like the procedure: 1) to threaten 2) to show way 3) to find out own way. This should be preserved.»
- The diversity of approaches (social, cultural, not purely ecological), the diversity of lecturer"s professions. The possibility to exchange your opinions on small groups (seminars, during assignment).»
- All»
- N/A»
- TED-talks, movies, study visits and the idea of describing sustainability from different perspectives through various guest lecturers.»
- mainly seminars and group discussion»
- Very interesting course to have a overall approach of sustainable development and the challenge we face today as future architects.»
- Lectures: peak oil, niklas wennberg. The course assignment.»
- the diversity of study material and speakers.»
- Study visits and lectures»
- The seminars on certain literature »
- the organisation,»
- the seminar and group discussion are very essencial part thougout the whole course.»
- Everything»
- Very well organization of the course with the possibilities of study visits and very interesting view at the problem of Sust. dev. from a lot of sides. And there was great the possibility to get to literature and lectures on web-sites. That was perfect.»
- The large number of lecturers from different backgrounds»
- Schedule, organization.»
- Almost everything»
- all»
- Lectures with Lena Falkheden (Straw bales), Kaminsky (Super Sustainable City), Niklas Wennberg (pigs etc), were very inspiring and stand out a little extra in my head.»
- The width of knowledge in the lectures/movies/films. I really enjoyed the lecture of Kristel de Myttenaere.»
- The lecture from the woman from Delft, which concretizised the topic of sust del in Architecture in a nice way»
- Maybe less students. Less printed material.»
- The links to films and lectures on the internet as course "literature". »
- Det mesta»
- no opinion..»
- The large scope of the different speakers during the lectures!»
- The over all structure»
- The structure of this lecture (in between lecture and literature studies and sharing our knowledge and discussion)»
- The good content and high level of lectures»

14. What should be changed for next year?

- Maybe a better designed group discussion? It was pretty lame in our group. I dont know how though. Too little time for discussion (in our group) at examination. Examinators should read the A4 aswell?»
- maybe not every page handed out had to be printed out for every student, maybe you could save some money/environmental impact on that ,)»
- nothing i can think of right now!»
- don"t change the structure, may be try to find new projects that have been developed in the past year and present them along with new technology. »
- Nothing»
- I just think that the course could be more focus on examples the last week. »
- I felt there might have been some teambuilding activities in the beginning. For example to see who is in which masters program( I found out that some people had not decided yet which masters program they were on but that seemed strange to me since when I applied had to choose a specific masters program ). For me it would be easy to remember seeing the program as a group of people but harder to ask everyone individually and try to remember as I have done. The whole crowd can be a bit difficult because it is so large. Some "silly" (or serious) games and activities can do a lot for the group. We have been encouraged to discuss the contents of the lectures in brakes, but in my case the matters of discussion were mostly the outline of the course and the school and then about each others backgrounds and different nationalities, which is, I think, very natural.»
- the last seminar not 2 days before assignment. Too little time! The films should take place in the lecture halls because the seats in A-salen are not appropriated for long sitting. »
- study visits?»
- Less printed information»
- lectures spread over several days not 8 hours of lectures. smaller group for one lectures. pm and literature not printed, a HUGE waste of paper (especially in a course about sustainability!)»
- Movies should be watched in VM or VB. It"s good enough, even better chairs.»
- I would add some cross critique from resort of economy and other enemy resorts of sustainability.»
- Maybe it would be interesting to show to everyone some of the optional films of the "film festival", because I found the two "Cities on speed" and the one about Cuba very interesting.»
- A second edition of the report delivered in the presentation day. This will give an opportunity to the student to reedit her/his report in order to explain what has not been clear to her/his collegues after the presentation instance. To be handed in the day after the presentation 18hs.»
- N/A»
- I think once choosing guest lectures "inspiriting" lecturers should be prioritized to the ones than are just "informative". Niklas Wennberg and Transition Allingsås are examples of that kind of inspiring lectures. »
- nothing»
- I have no comment to do.»
- Change the date for the second seminar, it was too late, or too close to the course assignment. maybe it"s enough with just one seminar. »
- The period dedicated for climate change could be shorter in order to lengthen the period dealing with design profession and tools as an architect/ urban planner...»
- I think the part about examples or solutions for sustainble development should be extended. As an architect you don"t want to hear about all the problems, you want to find solutions or listen to ideas.»
- too much about environment, too little about architecture»
- if the literature material had a more clear classification, maybe it will work more efficient.»
- I think the sustainable stategy of skyscrapers and tier buildings are missing in the class. We only see the way of building small houses and ignore one important part of architecture to be sustainable. Small house is enough in Sweden, but we could be more international, right?»
- Maybe change the design of the group discussion to a written draft for the final assignment- to help the writing process to start earlier.»
- There is a lot of questions that remain unanswered in the course. We saw a lot of problems but we didn"t find a lot of answers for: How to do it well. Maybe it is good task for the next time to focus on tying to find more answers if there are some. To show more possibilities not just misery. Students need not just something to think about but either something they can build on.»
- The size of the class should be smaller, maybe have 2 lecturers come at same time in different rooms.»
- More seminars ang group interaction maybe with the seminarists or/and responsibles for the course»
- Perhaps some lectures could be deleted, because some topics where repeated mostly the same way, and some days there were lots of lectures, basically on mondays.»
- have more focus on solutions - what are the sustainable design now or future. i find too much focus on why we need sustainabiliity and quite negative tone. a bit too much threat. add in a bit more technical aspects of sustainability. »
- all»
- I"d like to see more creativity, somewhere to "spit out" ideas etc...Maybe some workshop or think tank.»
- Give some ENGLISH LESSONS to the ones giving the lectures!!»
- Personally I felt like 4 pages is much to write in that short amount of time, especially when one wants to make a high quality paper. I also felt that the focus of the lectures with examples of architecture lay on energy and environmental sustainability. It would have been nice to see more of other important values. Important to have a balance maybe - but then of course - how to prioritize?»
- The one tonne house lecture, booring and uninspiering»
- Inget speciellt»
- no opinion»
- inga håltimmar innan filmvisning. Hellre för alla i stor sal än lilla a-salen. »
- don"t change anything»
- Trying to integrate more of architecture"s aspects!»
- Information to the speekers. 1. Tell about what previous speekers has said so that they don"t have to say the same thing. Or if they do they can adopt by not presenting it as new extraordinary information. 2. It becomes embarassing when a speeker brags about swedish inventions for the 7th time in a mixed class such as ours.»
- The fisrt group discussion can transform the same as the last day(poster presantation and cross discussion day ). Since, one of lecturer or architecture can show us different aspects to think deeply.»
- I think the assignment discussion would have gone further if we kept the seminar group»

- Inspiring course. +++mix of female and male lecturers! »
- very good course! and good assignments»
- The course was very enlighting»
- Very good organisation.»
- After taking the course I have a better formed understanding of the relation of my chosen profession, architecture, to sustainable development.»
- I believe the course runned very smoothly and is definitely thought stimulating. Very satisfied with the outcomes.»
- I had some problems understanding the courses in English, but it is a problem that comes from me!»
- An interesting question is how you change people"s approach to sustainability and saving the planet. To make us frightened hasn"t helped so far, good examples are important but doesn"t really do the trick. A combination of them both do somehow sum up the course. But are there better ways to make people care? This could be a topic for discussion in the course.»
- You have opened my eyes, thank you.»
- Enjoyed the course, even though I had previous knowledge of most issues. A would suggest a seminar at the end of every week to discuss both readings and lectures. The large volume of information seemed to make people a bit distant. Maybe a weekly review/discussions would help students digest the information in smaller chunks?»
- Well done, I really feel I"ve learned something this course! =)»
- Maybe we should have a lecture with more practical details in sustainable buildings. Some guides in how one is constructed.»
- Bra kurs! Bra att ni delade upp grupperna efter ursprung så det blev en varierad diskussion.»
- Thank you very much»
- I think, personally, the main problem of the AMU018 is the lack of architectural aspects and, in particular, architectural responses! It was really interesting to see the different way of thinking the sustainability and the different issues of the Sustainabilty! But too often, it misses the architectural point of view, an architectural response for an architectural problem (it was too often, an technical response for a social problem)!»
- Keep up the good work»
- Bra och inspirerade lärare för kursen!»
