- All members of our group took different courses beside this one which resulted in that we worked with maybe 50% of our manpower each time and since this is school we wanted everyone to have their say before major decisions were made, which made our project very slow.» (Rather poorly)
- WOuld have been better to make a project with people from other master programs. » (Rather well)

- I liked the experience gained from the project and from working together with a company. Sadly though I cannot say I got anything out of the department except the project budget.» (Poor)
- Lovely project. It´,s a shame that not all masterprograms have this opportunity to work with this kind of project.» (Excellent)
- great to work in a project over such a long period of time» (Excellent)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Individual workspace & designated working times»
- Exhibitionday, duggas. »
- Almost everything»
- well mixed groups»
- The freedom of deciding when to do what without having the gates already set up. The concept gate was okey though.»
- when teachers want to give score, I think they must look at how hard is a project. for instance, some projects are really difficult while others are easier.»
- Remove the quizes?»
- Workshops»
- Permanent work spaces.»
- The cooperation with companies.»
- Project work from companies.»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- ??»
- Better information, focus more on product then on the economics of the company and give better lectures.»
- concept gate a bit earlier»
- The criteria in the team member assessment, for example, we had one person responsible for the economy, and obviosly that person was the only one to recieve high marks in that area. The criteria should be more general...»
- Update the lectures to cover much more advanced topics.»
- I think nothing must be changed, »
- Remove the quizes?»
- Timing of concept gate should be somewhere earlier to provide more time for detail development.»
- Lectures, duggas, indivual assesment, "pshycologist-session"»
- More deadlines and mandatory parts.»
- Lectures should be more interesting and tell more about how to apply it to the work»
- I would like the supervisor at Chalmers to have more contact with the supervior at the company to get opinions from their view how the team worked and also the individuals input to the project. not only one time in the end of the course»
- Don"t change the dugga limits afterwards. If you have or don"t have a chance of getting a 5 after the first dugga affects how much you"re going study for the second one.»
- The rules for economics. Were a problem that we couldn"t print for the money. We used a lot of paper to interviews which we needed print from our own print quota. »

16. Additional comments

- Remove the quizes?»

The project

17. What is your overall opinion about the project course and that it is based on an assignment from an industrial company?

- Good experience of real life problem»
- Very good, we had a superb supervisor at the company and we did get everything we needed.»
- Good»
- very good»
- Very good, we learnt alot about working in a "real" project, ver different from other school projects.»
- The intentions with the course are very good.»
- It is agood course because students know how is a real industrial project.»
- Very good»
- Real-life project: very interesting for our future career»
- I definitely like the fact that the project is from the so called real world, it makes it much more interesting. For my overall opinion: the project was GOOD, however the lectures, the indvidual assessment, information, the "psychologist-session" and duggas could have been executed better.»
- Very good idea, probably better in som projects and worse in some.»
- The project content is somehow a little fuzzy at the beginning, it was really hard to set up a boundary of the project because the workload is unpridictable. Maybe the company should state more about the boundary since they can do the better prediction of the workload.»
- Brilliant!»
- To be honest it feels like a repetition of project in ingenjörs metodik,IKOT and bachelor thesis. Can really say than I"ve learn much new apart from the specific knowledge related to the product itself. So from a knowledge per points taken I think there are more efficient ways to learn. »
- Good»
- It did work very well for me. Getting an industrial project and working along side their requirements gave me lot of experience both theoretically and practically.»

18. What do you think about the course introduction including the project presentation and project selection process?

- Good!»
- Good»
- was ok»
- It worked very well.»
- The two worked alright, however there should be a motivation to why the groups look like they do.»
- I think it is good. there is no change required.»
- Very good»
- Project selection process based on motivation for a specific project: Very Good»
- From what I can remember (was quite a while ago), I thought the course intro was good. Selecting 3 projects and motivate those worked well.»
- nice»
- good enough»
- I did not attend»
- Hard to get a good understanding of the projects from a short presentation...»
- Good»
- Very well explained»

19. Did the project presentation and project memo provide relevant and useful information for starting the project?

- Yes absolutely.»
- from time to time»
- yes»
- Yeah, though meetings with the company and the procejt team supervisor was also essential.»
- The project presentations were OK but the memo could be made more compact. Except from updates of the memo after the course had started I guess the contents were alright.»
- I think Yes»
- Very good»
- Yes»
- Unfortunately, I think the project memo contained too much information. People simply do not read such long documents (including me). Perhaps it could work to split the memo into different documents?? One for economy etc..»
- Yes it did»
- Yes, good job :)»
- Yes»
- Yes»

20. How did you experience the formation of the project team?

- Not as good as it could have been. My group were already well established by the time I arrived in January & never went back to the "forming" stage of teamwork. I was therefore never really seen as part of the group. »
- Good.»
- Good»
- very good!»
- It worked well, but it would have been nice if the members of the team didn"t all have the same background (5 out of 6 from mechanichal engineering at chalmers) but that might be hard to avoid.»
- This might be only speculations, but seemingly people who sent their project selection e-mail in the latest got their first hand selections. If this is true I think it is an extremely lazy and unprofessional approach. Might be a good idea to provide some notes to the next class why the project groups are assembled the way they are. In our case the whole group had the same competence so we could just as well have done the project with three people instead of six.»
- actually, i prefer if there are more than one international students in a team. when you are just one international student, sometimes people starts to speak swedish and then they may give you a translation at the end, but it is not that much good. it sometimes happens»
- Very good»
- Very interesting to get to know people from different countries and work with different way of thinking»
- Difficult to say, since I have no idea how that formation process worked. I only send in my motivation and that was that.»
- It was ok, but we were short of people comparing to the other groups.»
- People have different knowledge and can cover all the work need in different fields, but the group was somehow too international, it was really hard to cope with that. 2 or 3 different country is enough, not 5, kinda insane.»
- My team was great and we worked really good together»
- Better if people from different master programs.»
- Combination of expertise was perfect for our group.»

21. Has the team-building exercise with the psychologist been useful?

- Not really, as I didn"t really learn anything & my group made "norms" that they all agreed on. »
- Could be improved i think.»
- No»
- no, not at all»
- Haven"t really thought about it...»
- Maybe, but I think bowling or whatever is more useful than a psychologist when it comes to team building. I don"t understand why we Chalmers students have to listen to this psychologist every year, one year is enough.»
- i think yes. »
- Not helpful at all»
- It was rather helpful to understad team dyanamics.»
- Not really»
- No, not at all. Would have been much better with team building activities. The information has been presented SEVERAL times at bachelor level (mechanical engineering). Only talking about different group-phases is according to me worth nothing if you do not do anything practical as well. It would have been useful with a feedback-session, that is group members dicussing their weaknesses and strengths.»
- More interesting than helpful»
- Not at all. The team go by friendships more than go by rules. The list of rules is not helpful, maybe some change would be nice. But the opportunity for the team to discuss is nice.»
- Well, I think it should be a follow up session maybe 2 times after the first, to see how the team have developed»
- Didn"t learn anything that haven"t heard from previous courses at Chalmers.»
- Could have been more, later in the project. »
- No. Although some of the critical team issues were discussed most of them were not implemented as the team more concentrated to get the work done.»

22. What do you think about the contents of your project in terms of complexity, difficulty and suitability for this course?

- It was a good example of a product design and development project in a real situation»
- I think it was a good content in all projects, and our project was more complex than we first thought.»
- it suits very well to the course»
- It was very suitable for this course.»
- I think it was alright.»
- The project that i was involved in was too difficult and we did not have access to test the final project on the working size and under working condition.»
- Alright»
- I guess it was good. Don"t have anything to compare with. »
- A little to complex but that was mostly our fault»
- The project content is really fit to the course, it was good and I like it.»
- The project could have been less "made up". The company didn"t have any expert knowledge in the area of the project which required a lot of effort to get an understanding of the problem. »
- For our team, the content was rather adequate to execute with in the time frame.»

23. How has the interaction with your company and your industrial contact person worked out?

- He was very hard to contact, often taking over a week to reply to emails or telephone calls»
- Very, very good!»
- It all worked very well»
- was ok (contact person was often out of country)»
- Pretty well, though we had to many contact persons that all wanted different things which sometimes was a problem.»
- Our company was very easy to come in contact with.»
- it was helpful and we got enough insight about the project.»
- Very good»
- It was very limited because of lack of availability of contact person. But in the end it turn out well.»
- Weekly meetings Very good interaction, weekly feedback on our work»
- Well. They have been very interested in the project!»
- Good»
- The company contact person didn"t have much time to contact, hard to reach, maybe it is better if the contact person has more time for students. (smaller position for example)»
- We had a brilliant supervisor at the company, he always helped us and supported up throughout the whole project.»
- The contact person was very hard to get in touch with. Did not answer mail and rarely phone calls »
- Good»
- Very good»

24. To what extent have you reached the project goals you aimed at?

- Nearly fully, though they could have been of a much better standard»
- It has been fully reached.»
- yes»
- 90%»
- 80%»
- high»
- Almost to full extent.»
- Perhaps I am not that satisfied with the result of the project, however I have learnt a lot about the process of working in a project, group work and how to deal with dependency of other parties (such as "suppliers".»
- Pretty highly»
- Great extend»
- I think I have put a lot of hard work into the project and I am very satisfied with my effort, And I beleieve I have reached my goals»
- I think we fulfilled our goals.»
- I am overwhelmed with the results of my project.»

25. Has your company got what they wanted?

- Yes»
- Yes, they were very pleased.»
- hope so»
- yes»
- They seem to be happy with the results.»
- No, they expected a full scale working prototype. »
- I am still not sure.»
- Dont know»
- Yes they were happy with the results and soon will implement the solution.»
- Don"t really know»
- To some extent. Some part of the projects were useful, some not.»
- I hope so»
- The contact person seemed happy, I think so.»
- I believe so, we have come up with different solutions and prototypes and that was what they wanted.»
- I the company didn"t any clear deliverables. I think they look at the this project more as a marketing thing... »
- No, they were promised a full scale prototype by somebody but we didn"t had the time for that.»
- Yes»

26. Any other comments about the project, its contents and the work process?

- The individual assessment was a bit strange I think. Would have been much better to have an open discussion with the group and the supervisor (or both discussion and "secret paper"). Such a discussion would also provide an opportunity to tell the group members as well as supervisor his or hers pros and cons. By doing so, the team members and supervisor would get valuable feedback and be able to improve their "behaviour" in future projects! That is so much more important than just putting a number in a box.»
- More info what the group supervisor is for.»
- The methods learned in the course somehow make the process worse since it doesn"t fit to the content of the project. for ex: It wasn"t say in the course PM or anywhere but almost everyone understood that the only way of generating idea is to use Morphological metrix, and that gave a really hard time to adapt our project to cope with the method not to adapt the method to cope with the project. Also the selection and screening matrix. By not using any of these at all, might yield a better result (or not).»
- As of now it looks good and should be followed in coming years»

Lectures, short tests "duggor", and reflection paper

27. What do you think about the usefulness of having this kind of exercises linked to the project work?

- It would have been beneficial to have examples of what the duggor would contain. »
- Good»
- No»
- its ok (otherwise no one would study the book in detail)»
- I could have done without it, it didn"t really help me with the project.»
- I understand the intentions with the reflection report but I don"t believe it works out the way it is wanted to. We just felt it was something that was needed to be done and we had no interest or motivation in writing one.»
- i think they are not helpful. short tests did not help us for project. while I read mostly the chapters of book for tests, and questions from lectures were more than questions from book, It was not just my problem. I saw other students with this problem.»
- I don"t think the duggor are very related with the project. The methods and theories taught during the lectures are used in the project anyway.»
- I guess the idea with lectures, duggas and reflection paper is good, however the execution was not that good. The lectures did not provide with practially ANY new information (not if you have studied mechanical engineering at bachelor level at least). It makes you wonder... Isn"t there anything new to learn within this area? Moreover, those who did not have the "method toolbox" from their bachelor level had the opportunity to take the "method" coures during fall, hence no need for repetition!!! Regarding the duggas: Learning slides by heart shouldn"t the be way to score high on a test at master"s level. Put some effort when formulating the questions. Reflection paper: I did not understand the purpose of the reflection report, that could be one reason for why I didn"t like it. I think it would have been better with a reflection paper covering the project. By doing so, the group would have to relect over how the project was exectued in terms of for example group dynamics AND discuss how different methods affected the project and the result. Thus, reflect over both "project process" and methods.»
- Ok, but does seem a little unsubstantial»
- I don"t think the duggas really help the student to be more understand about the methods. Doesn"t help that much.»
- Really good. »
- I think it"s hard to see the connection of the two. It"s not like you learn a lot at the lectures that you can implement in your project. The lectures is better of as a separate course. And a lot of is actually repetition from the product development management course.. »
- Good, the reflection report was a bit strange.»
- Useful to some extent to test the theoretical knowledge of the individuals»

28. Do you think that it is reasonable that an MSc in Product Development should be familiar with different theoretical approaches within the field?

- Yes»
- Yes»
- Yes, but the duggas had the wrong questions. The ones from chalmers has done the same thing in to many courses to feel that this is relevant»
- yes definitely»
- Yes»
- Yes, but we have no theoretical edge against other Chalmers students who have previously studied the mechanical engineering bachelor programme. The things brought up are way to easy and most of them are based on common sense.»
- yes the should, because they may use it in real working life.»
- Yes, it allows us some flexibility.»
- Yes.»
- Yes»
- Yes, I think so, but the duggas didn"t help with that. »
- Of course, really important, thats what alot of companys look for, that new employees closely graduateed have alot of theoritical approaches in their mind!»
- Yes of course.»
- Yes»
- Yes.»

29. Have the lectures and the reflective paper helped you to gain this familiarity?

- Yes»
- Yes»
- Not at all»
- yes»
- We did look this up as we went, the book would be enough without the lectures etc.»
- Not at all.»
- somehow. I think book was more understandable.»
- Yes.»
- Yes. Though, it is a shame that not more NEW info was presented during lectures. However, many projects seem to fail nowadays so maybe repetition is good... :)»
- To some extent, the work itself gained more.»
- Yes, to some extend, maybe have more example of how the method is used will be more helpful.»
- Yes a lot»
- To some extent, but the lectures are to brief give a deeper knowledge »
- To some extent»
- Yes.»

30. How did the short tests "duggor" influence your efforts to gain familiarity on the topic?

- Not as much as would have been liked»
- It was good because you started to read the course literature.»
- Not at all»
- quite a lot»
- Not really, read through the ppt-slides the day before and passed.»
- Not that much»
- Not much at all really.»
- It make me read the book and that helped to some extent in project process. But I really dont find a strong connection between the exam and reallife application.»
- The duggor did not influence my efforts.»
- The duggas was mostly about learning slides by heart as I see it, so I do not think the influence was that high...»
- Pretty little actually»
- Poor»
- Gave a lot »
- Well, it force you to read up on the topic.»
- I learnt about the different methods to be applied and used in the project.»

31. Had you preferred to get this familiarity in some other way? If so, in what way?

- no, its ok like that»
- We got a lot of recommendations from our supervisor, that way we learnt alot about the methods and tools that we actually used.»
- Theoretical tests are better than forcing the projects to be carried out in specific ways so I think it is an OK approach.»
- Remove it»
- Just by working on the project, and maybe adding a temporary grading on the methods report so we could know if we go the right direction.»
- I guess duggas, lectures and reflection paper is good. However, put more effort in the design of the duggas, skip the "repetion" lectures and make the reflection paper cover the project process, not the book.»
- Maybe the courses in the beginning of the program could be coupled with the pdp more.»
- The reflection report is really helpful to get fully understand about it. Maybe focus more on reflection report would be nicer»
- Have it in a separate course.»
- Reading the books is the only alternative.»

32. Any other comments about the lectures and the assignment?

- The lecture after the 2nd dugga was not really relate to the project but somehow interesting. Make them mandatory is a good option especially when it is a guess lecture, it is nicer to have more student there.»

The work spaces in the "Course laboratory"

33. You were the first students to get "permanent" work spaces in the lab. What is your opinion about the lab?

- Great idea, it was a really useful space that we used for most, if not all, of our work. It would have been much more difficult to complete the project of we had not had the meeting place. »
- Hm, not the best. If, as in our case, we loaned expensive equipment from our company there was no place to put it... So maybe to next year, have the workspace somewhere things can be locked in and that not all students has access to.»
- cold in the winter and sometimes not that comfortable because of noise from other students and hard chairs, but it was very nice to have a common workplace!!! definitely keep that for next years»
- It was really good to have, we always worked there. But it took very long to get the electricity fixed.»
- The drawer units and the workspaces were good to have for storing things. We had a workspace where we all had to sit in a long row which was not good at all for meetings etc. Furthermore the chairs in the course lab are extremely bad to sit on for longer periods of time.»
- actually our place in tha lab was not good at all. and other students from other programs usually though that they were allowed to use our place, specially those Formula students.»
- It was helpful as a common place to work, but a small inmprovement can be dont with the seating arrangement which was really unconfortable for long seating times.»
- Very important to work on the project. You should keep that aspect for next year!»
- Good with a permant work space. Though, we were promised electricity VERY early and it was fixed in May or something like that. Not ok!!!»
- Good, but didn"t use it that much. Group rooms were used more.»
- Our space was quite good so we work there all the time but other groups don"t really. The chairs are really uncomfortable. The space should be more like having a table in the middle so everyone can sit and see each other not one table at one corner.»
- I really liked the lab area, unfortunetly sometimes there were other people who used the space and sometimes it was difficult to tell them to leave, also a lot of other stuff were placed in our area which sometimes made it messy»
- We got space the back of the room which was very narrow and where other course, like formula student tend to use as storage space. This made it practical impossible to use the space which forced us to relocate to other places at chalmers. »
- It was perfect to have a dedicated work space through out the project time. We organized, worked, left things and returned the next day to continue without having to move around and waste time. It should be followed the same way in coming years.»
