- I felt to many questions were very hard to solve and it took to much time to solve some of the questions.» (To some extent)
- Too many questions on the exam! I suggest removing at least 2 questions. It was not possible to demonstrate one"s knowledge with so many questions. I felt I knew how to solve 90% of the questions but did simply not have time to do it. I only had time for about 55% of the points. Some questions were tricky, which is good and fun. Some were messy (table filling algorithms), which means it takes long time to do them to be sure you don"t mistake any value in a table. If a solution for a question takes about 30 min, and then you review/verify it to be sure in 10, there is no way one can solve all of the questions. One also might some time to catch one"s breath, and its not like sitting in a bench 4 hours without break is the most productive work process...» (To some extent)

- I found it very hard to follow on the lectures. Too much formulas compressed into few lines made it hard to understand for me. I has to parse each line of text and try to understand what it meant, but almost never succeeded. So i stopped going there and started reading a lot more in the text book instead. The lectures on thursdays were easier to follow.» (Small extent)
- Excersise sessions was better than Lectures, Go Willard!» (Large extent)

- The current course book (Hopcroft, Motwani etc) was very theoretical and hard to digest. Switched to learning from "An Introduction to Formal Languages and Automata" (Linz) and it made every concept so much clearer and easier to grasp. (While not delving as deep into formality as Hopcroft).» (Small extent)

- Willards notes were epic. Didn"t ever look or buy the book though. » (Some extent)

- I think this course has vast potential. The material is very interesting and has wide applicability within computer science. I feel, however, that this course should be held separately for students with mathematical background and a background in CS. To get better results from students, I am fully convinced that the course needs to show much clearer the specific uses of the different concepts, preferrably by one or two programming projects to give the students a hands on experience with the material.» (Fair)

- Was very hard to get into this course initially because no solutions were offered for ANY questions in the weekly problems (except the assignments). Was hard to get a sense of if you are doing things right or wrong when the subject is totally new to you. Also made it next to impossible to understand anything on the lectures, because I was never sure I understood things right from the last week or not.» (Good)

- willard and the weekly assignment, often explained things in a more simple and easy to grasp way than at the lectures. at the end I stopped going to the lectures and went to willard"s lectures instead, and felt I learned more in less time than at the regular lectures.»
- Williards demonstrations, specially the first ones, they way he explained FAs, and how to make "runs" in NFAs. Assignments were cool.»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Try to get financial backing from the IT-programme (and possibly D-programme) to develop a series of programming laborations which are either mandatory or give bonus points on the exam. I think this would take the course to a whole other level. »

- More answers to exercises, old exams and assignments. It"s really hard to study and learn things without knowing if you have done it the right way or not!»

- Exam! Fewer questions! More sample exams and solutions could be good. Although personally I knew about 90% of the real exam, so felt very well prepared for it, so while I didn"t need it, someone else might have.»

- * Too much material to cover on exercise sessions but not enough time. => solution: Either cut in the amount of material or add extra exercise time. * Fix that computer can talk to OH SW in the lecture hall. This didn"t work this year. A ridiculous amount of time was wasted this year on this. * Not so MUCH focus on proofs all the time. Sure the subject kind on requires it. But sometimes it was WAY to excessive. For example on assignment part.»
