- Changes to next year: 1. Schedule on homepage should be the same as timeedit. You can not always check before every class. most people sync their calenders in the beginning of the study period. 2. Lab visits have to be included in the schedule! People have other classes to attend aswell.» (100%)

Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

19 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»1 5%
The goals are difficult to understand»1 5%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»7 36%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»10 52%

Genomsnitt: 3.36 (bidrar till totalt genomsnitt/jämförelseindex)

- The goals are even more important in a course with so many different persons giving lectures. The overall goals and levels must be clearer.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

19 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»0 0%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»19 100%
No, the goals are set too high»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2

- But it would be better if I had more knowledge about physics.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

19 svarande

No, not at all»0 0%
To some extent»9 47%
Yes, definitely»9 47%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»1 5%

Genomsnitt: 2.57

- It does not test all the methods but it gives a good opertunity to test on writing a report.» (To some extent)
- The examination is heavily dependent on the choice of project. I heard some people really had trouble with their lab work.» (To some extent)
- Tell, it depend on the project chosen. Other than that, yes. Maybe a set of tasks for a few different problems could be a good examination?» (To some extent)
- Since "only" two analysis methods were evaluated it is difficult to know if you have understood the other methods. But I guess that becomes clear when the students ask questions and discuss.» (To some extent)

Teaching and course administration

6. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?

7. Would a home assignment (e.g. a short report) following each lecture increase your motivation to learn about all methods?

19 svarande

Yes»5 26%
Yes, but only in the form of a quiz.»5 26%
No»9 47%

Genomsnitt: 2.21

- good idea, but only a VERY short reort in that case.» (Yes)
- I think if more work load was put on each lecture it would have been too much, but a quiz or similar would be ok.» (Yes, but only in the form of a quiz.)
- As a PhD student, my interest relies more in picking out what is interesting for me and to be able to focus on that. » (No)
- But maybe a set of problems to attack, e.g "you would like to determine xx using xx and in the range xx, what method (and how) would you choose? describe your approach.."» (No)
- Since not every method is in the scope of everyonce interest, what if there was number of home assigmnets to be solved for a chosen methods? Example: There were ~12methods. Some of the methods are very similar, and the assignments can be combined into one. Therefore, the total number of HA is 10. A student may choose 8HA to solve. He/she works on the HA from the methods he/she found interesting, and thinks that he/she will need the method knowledge during his/her further education/work. The assignments should be on the same level, could be in a form of a short report. To "dig in" the topic. It would higher the level of the course. Students would more involved. What do you think?» (No)

- I really missed a compendium or something like that. A course based on powerpoint presentations (from several persons) is not optimal to me. Of course references was listed in some presentation, but pesonally I think a summary/compendium with the basics and pros and cons about the techniques would be helpful. It would make things more clear!» (Small extent)
- The only thing I was missing was number of references and reading literature. The slides are not enough. Not every presentation included references. If there were additional reading availabe, or just a source where we could read more about the methods presented.» (Some extent)

10. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?

Very badly»1 5%
Rather badly»2 10%
Rather well»11 55%

Yes, they served the purpose»15 75%
More time per lab would be preferred»5 25%
No, they could have been omitted»0 0%

Summarizing questions

18. What is your general impression of the course?

20 svarande

Poor»2 10%
Fair»1 5%
Adequate»3 15%
Good»13 65%
Excellent»1 5%

Genomsnitt: 3.5

- The one and only project started way too late, and I felt that this is a course for the ones that already work with a fancy material that needs to be investigated.» (Poor)
- I was very much looking forward to this course, but was very disappointed.» (Poor)
- I thought that I would learn more applied knowledge, this was wery theoretical to me.» (Fair)
- I did enjoy the course. It gave me more understanding of the methods I never worked with or I already did. » (Excellent)

19. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The hands-on experience, it was great!»
- The whole concept of the course is good, you learn a lot of technoques and about their limitations plus some usefull practical course, perfect course for a PhD.»
- a project, but probably give the materials to every group, so that it would be more interesting to investigate and there will be equal conditions for everyone»
- Lab tours are important. »
- The project.»
- The project»
- The project»
- the examination form, i.e. a lab report and an oral presentation.»
- The project work, the report and the presentation part. The lecture and the lab-tour. I do like the idea of the invited teachers from different groups. It"s great that one course can be given by personal from different groups/departments. That should be continued. »
- The lab visits which makes everything more understandable and it is good to know where they are.»

20. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- I missed the overall view in the course. I would have liked to have the different techniques connected to some kind of overview-part where the selection of techniques could have been in focus. Since different people had lectures about their specialities, I think that the basic introduction and the selection process got lost. »
- Would have prefered if the projectrs would have started 2 weeks earlier so that it would have been less stressfull. Make sure that the lab tours are scheduled beforehand, as it was written in the schedule it looked as if it was included in the ordinary lecture time.»
- the material selection for the project»
- schedule and labvisits»
- If we can submit a small report in each techniques will be nice. »
- If having a project, it must be started up much earlier. Add some assignments, otherwise the lectures gets too boring, because there is no need to listen if the interest is not there.»
- Earlier possiblity to start with the project. Clearer information on who to talk to regarding the different instruments.»
- Maybe a trip to the NMR-centre in medicinareberget could be nice, there are some competent nice ppl there who would love to give a tour..»
- As you suggested, VERY small reports on each lecture. I think that every time you are "forced" to write down your perception of a concept (measurement method or similar) you will gain some better understanding of it.»
- I feel that instead of covering too much techniques with a little overview, it would be nice to cover moderate analytical techniques with more details.»
- I can"t come up with anything, sorry.»

21. Additional comments

- Thank you for an interesting course.»
- Happy about the course. Specially project work is very nice.»
- The labtours should be added in the schedule on time-edit.»
- Maybe some more focus on NMR/MRI with a trip to the NMR-centre could be nice.»
- Very nice course! I learned a lot!»
- 1. Some lectures are not entirely about the method in discussion, rather they are about such things as the facilities... And this was way out of proportion for the lecture to be given the title it had. 2. Some, very few, lecturers come unprepared. Even though they are the experts in the area, and it shows so, they bring slides they prepared years before which don"t remember what it actually says and which should have been updated based on what has been happening since then.»
- Very interesting, informative and FUN course! When I answered that the workload was low, that doesn"t mean that I would prefer a higher workload. I guess most participants had other courses or projects going on parallel with this course so the over all workload assume is fair.»
- Thank you for a very good course! Is one of the courses to be recommended to the other students.»
