- The course material was very wide - but it"s not the problem, the problem is that it wasn"t clear how to prepare for exam: which material was important to know? We had only one exam sample from 2008, that was outdated because the course has changed over last 3 years, and this sample wasn"t any help. Because lecturers didn"t show up on the final lecture for exam questions, we had to ask almost each lecturer individually which material to study to prepare ourselves, and then we ended up spending most of the time studying the material that wasn"t reflected in the exam. Exam to 80% consisted of the questions that I didn"t expect. » (No, not at all)
- Because so many different topics are discussed during the course, only a minor part of the knowledge attained is assessed during the examination.» (To some extent)
- Some questions were however taken out of the blue. Like for instance some fermi-function calculations. Although in total, the exam was one of the best and balanced exams I have taken to date at Chalmers. They really represented the course on the exam.» (Yes, definitely)

Teaching and course administration

- Most of the lectures were just review lectures, they could be more explanatory. All teachers were repeating some material that was discussed at previous course lectures with other teachers.» (Some extent)
- The lecture is the main source for knowledge in the course. The lectures were, however, not equaly informative and it was sometimes difficult to know exactly what one is supposed to learn. It is sometimes mentioned, in just a few words, which parts of the lecture are the most important before or after the lecture. Even this provides some guidance, it would be better if the lecturer stressed that some information is extra important as he or she moves on to discuss it.» (Large extent)

- Even though the recomended literature was informative, it was difficult to directly relate the contents of the book and the lectures. It would be better if each lecture could be tied to some literature source, that gives a more detailed description of the subject. Even though research papers can be informative, it is not a good source of knowledge for novices.» (Some extent)

8. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?

- It seemed like course lecturers do not communicate with each other. For example, when we asked each one of them questions about course organisation (i.e. exam aids, project grades, etc.) they couldn"t answer, and just told us to ask other lecturer. We were supposed to have final lecture with almost all lecturers, to summarize material and ask questions about the exam, and nobody came (and nobody notified that this lecture was canceled), and we had to find lecturers ourselves.» (Rather badly)
- It took to much time for some of the lecture notes to become available on the course homepage, especially those that were related to the second and third parts of the course. Also, some of the assignements that were given were never made available and were only handed out on particular lectures, even though the students were not informed on this beforehand. It was also difficult to find the new informations reagarding the course as this was made available. In addition no handouts were uploaded onto the web page. Instead such reading material was sent to the students via email only after some individual had requested it.» (Rather badly)

- According to the lecturers, they could be contacted if questions arose with regards to the home assignements or the lectures. This worked well, to some extent. However, certain individuals were at times difficult to get hold of. Also, none of the lecturers were present at a scheduled question hour before the exam.» (Rather good)
- I think there should be some kind of exercise sessions with the quantum transport-part of the exam. » (Rather good)

- In some sense the amount of work that was supposed to be done during the course was reasonable. Still, given the amount of time that was spent on the home assignements some bonus points, for the exam, should have been awarded for completing the tasks.» (High)
- I make this workload comment. The workload was not to high per se, but the deadlines were sometimes to much, like for instance the deadlines issued by Dr. Danilov. Danilovs programming assignment should be assigned the first week and handed in at the end of the course to be reasonable. Not handed in one week from getting it. It was very difficult.» (Too high)

- Even the subject is interesting, there is still much room for improverement.» (Adequate)
- This is one of the best course I have taken at MC2. I think this will be a pivotal event in my academic career. Since I have learnt a lot, been using what I have learnt previously and also synthezied new and old knowledge. Besides the field of Molecular Electronics will probably be very very huge in the future. I really appreciate this kind of course since it will probably be very important for me in my endeavours into surface and nanophysics in the future.» (Excellent)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- I guess projects, because they were interesting and helped to some extent with understanding of the course material. But it was said in the projects" descriptions that they will be graded, and if we do some extra exercises we"ll get better grades, but in the end we didn"t get any grades, and it doesn"t seem like projects will affect exam results.»
- The assignements are interesting and should be kept. The lectures covers the entire field of molecular electronics, at least to some extent, but more effort could be made to tie everything together. In my mind the course, as well as the field as whole, two distinct parts, namely electronics made with molecular compounds and nanoscale electronic devices that incorporates single molecules. It would be good if the course was divided into these two parts and if the material was presented in a manner that better tied the theoretical aspects and the functions of devices, which are presented later, together.»
- I would say every assignment.»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- organisation of exam should be changed, it should be clearer what is expected from the students to produce on exam.»
- The order of the lectures should be rearrenged so that a each of the two main areas within the subject are discussed separately. For each of these two sequences of lectures, the theoretical aspects should be discussed first. The information in these should be intimately linked with the material that is later presented when different devices, applications and theoretical studies are discussed. Therefore, it is necessary for the lecturers to plan their individual presentations, and the home assignements they hand out, together. Also, the lecturers should provide some reference material that gives an overview of the topic that they present, which should be made available on the web page. Most importantly, a document should be made available at the start of the course that details all the subjects that will be discussed together with the goals of the course. This doccument should also include a schedule with all the lectures as well as the dates when home assignements are to be handed out and in respectively. Also, there should be some information about whether the assignements are obligatory or not and the number of bonus points, if any, that will be awarded upon completing the individual tasks. »
- There should be two times to ask questions about the course, first at around two thirds into the course, then 1-2 weeks before the exam. There should be exercisesessions regarding the quantum transport part of the course. Otherwise I think a lot of people with less theoretical physics in their background will be a bit put off and actually not succeed as well as they should"ve done. The course is very good, but the organization of the course need to be more tight and some kind of leader in the decision making should be assigned. Someone should be calling the shots, which is not the case now. Or the different parts in the course should cooperate more to create soem kind of holistic learning experience. My suggestion is that you could divide the course into one smaller project part for around 3 points and the exam could be 4.5 points. This would put off a bit of the stress as well as making the projects more higher stakes and thus they will be better performed. The exam should of course decide the total grade in the course. »
- Better goals! Better and more clear organization.»

16. Additional comments

- students do not have enough information about final exam and how to be prepared as long as high variety of subjects in this course, so they need more exam samples to work on them.»
- In spite of all misunderstandings and poor course organisation, this course didn"t kill my interest in molecular electronics.»
- Very good course. I really enjoyed it. »
