Goals and fullfilment of goals

1. Purpose of the design studio

Planning and Design for Sustainable Development in a Local Context is a design studio, divided into two parts (part A & part B), within the master programme Design for Sustainable Development. The thematic of the studio is planning and design for sustainable development in a small or medium-sized municipality in Sweden. The studio includes on-site activities in close cooperation with local authorities and communities.

The aim of the design studio is:
to increase knowledge and understanding of the planning- and development problems as well as possibilities of small and medium-sized municipalities/communities/towns in the perspective of sustainable development,
to train the ability to describe, analyse and interpret the local situation in a broad perspective, including spatial and architectural characteristics as well as environmental, social and economic aspects.
to, with a point of departure in an understanding of the conditions of place in a local as well as in a broader context, work out and try visionary principles of planning and design of spatial structures and the built environment, in support of a positive and sustainable development.

2. How do you evaluate the content and design of the design studio part A –, course assignment in 4 parts –, content, quantity, order, and organisation?

- Well organized and thought through assignments. Maybe a bit hard for some of the groups to place Alingsås in a broader context. That particular assignment seems to have worked better in previous years.» (Good)
- Jag tycker att det var bra med en ny uppgift varje vecka och en ny grupp varje vecka. Kanske hade det varit bra om vi fått lite tid (exempelvis en halv dag) efter varje presentation till att rätta de sakerna vi fått kritik på. Det blev så stressigt sista veckan, och svårt att komma ihåg vad som skulle kunna göras bättre. Eftersom vi var en så blandad grupp tycker jag att det kunde ha varit bra om vi diskuterade mer hur man kommunicerade sitt insamlade material bättre. I våra fördjupningsprojekt tyckte jag att det var svårt att använda en del av den informationen som hade blivit insamlad i första delen (på grund av otydliga diagram och kartor).» (Good)
- enda nackdelen är att alla får 4 i resultat. det ser inte bra ut om man vill söka vidrautbildning eller jobb. det kan lätt uppfattas att man inte klarat av att fullfölja kraven mycket väl. Antingen bör alla få 5 eller betygen skall vara individuella.» (Very good)

- Jag tycker det var bra att vi hade så stort frihet i våra fördjupningsprojekt och det var verkligen ett stort plus att vi fick så mycket hjälp att komma i kontakt med olika experter och handledare (Pål Castell, Katja Ketola etc.) Jag tycker det var synd att mittkritiken inte blev utnyttjad bättre. Jag tycker inte att det blev så mycket diskussion eller kritik, vilket gjorde att vi inte fick chansen att lyfta projekten innan slutkritiken. Att ta in fler gäster på mittkritiken och ha 15 min diskussion+kritik efter varje presentation hade varit bra.» (Passed)

- A very nice assignment with just the right amount of time to make a good sketch as a base for discussion. The strength of having a totally free project is also the weakness since many of the projects had a similar approach while some critical issues from the previous part of the course was forgotten. For example public transports and expansion of the built environment outside the city limit.» (Very good)

- Väldigt bra med seminarier och litteratur som vi fick. Jag tycker det första seminariet (om metod) kunde ha varit 2 x 1/2 dag, så man hade mer energi till att lyssna och förstå. Det kunde kanske ha varit fler inbjudna gästföreläsare som kunde berätta om hur de arbetar med hållbar utveckling i sina projekt.» (Good)

- Very good in the first part. Lacked a bit of supervision in the in depth project where we were guided by Katja. Would have been nice to have a dual tutoring at school. (Even though Pål, Sigrid and Lisa did a good job)» (Good)

- I missed a complete schedule. Having the program for the week on monday is not very helpful for planning in advance. » (Good)

- I had good assistance in recommendations of literature and project focus, but nearly no support in the more detailed design part, the extra supervision for this was to short and together with negative respons on main ideas it became more aggravating.» (Passed)

- The in-depth could take a larger part of the studio and contain more.» (Passed)
- High workpace but acceptable and valuable since teachers are equally involved in our work. » (Good)

- Everything in the course has been excellent except for the grading which personally I think was quite unfairly distributed. In some cases the grade was set high despite low involvement by the students, and in some cases it was the opposite, low grade despite high involvement and interest. This I believe through discussion with fellow students, is a common notion shared by many in the class. » (Good)

16. What have You missed in the design studio?

- A stronger connection between the two parts. The ridiculous goals that we came up with no one wanted to work with. The concluding material from the analysis could be stronger and follow better into the in-depth projects. More usable concluding material.»

- Hårdare kritik och mer nyanserad diskussion i klassen. Jag tyckte det var synd att det först var till den sista kritiken som en del saker blev sagt, när de kunde tagits upp tidigare. Det gäller inte bara fördjupningsprojekten men också de inledande faserna. Det var generellt lite för "mjuk" kritik, vilket gjorde att vi inte utvecklades så mycket som jag tror vi hade kunnat. »

17. Is there something that has been especially good or especially bad in the design studios?

- The holistic view on a small site in a small town. The in depth could be carried out with a high level of confidence once the thorough analysis were made. »

- the access to relevant literature in the studio is excellent! the organization of the course is the best i have ever experienced and also a role model for the students to improve the organization of their own work.»
- Något som har varit speciellt är Lärarna, Lena och Björn. Bästa som jag haft hittills, speciellt Lena. VÄLLDIGT bra planering och organisation i förväg. PERFKT med kunskap inom ämnet. MYCKET BRA stöd för studenterna.»

- Det bästa med studion var att det var en så härlig miljö, och det kändes verkligen som att lärargruppen brydde sig om oss. Dessutom var det väldigt spännande att få jobba i så nära kontakt med Alingsås kommun. »

18. Do You have any advise for how to improve the design studio?

- Computer time! All people "waste" hours in front of the computers producing posters. Don"t know how it could be done otherwise but thats how it was. »

- To much unnecessary handouts that never been read, many of them could also been communicated through mail or in black and white. »
- in the next course, it"s better to have more facilities in the studio, eg : pantry.»
- Mer fokus på mittkritiken! Kanske också en diskussion om vad man förväntar sig av design-studion första dagen. Eftersom vi var en så blandad grupp så tycker jag ibland att det var svårt att arbeta med en gemensam uppgift. Att diskutera olikheterna i gruppen kanske hade gjort det enklare. Blandningen av nationaliteter och tidigare utbildningar var verkligen också en styrka, men jag tror inte det hade skadat att diskutera var var och en kunde och ville lära sig. »
- To make full use of all the related materials and resources , for example to organize the literature seminar efficiently to push more inspiration and knowledges in to study and design.»
- Better support/coachning on the creative project level. It"s a tough and big task to find new creative solutions. The supervising needs to be better in that the supervisor doesn"t give negative respons if he has no better idea to follow it up with. Then more discussion is needed, for me the time was not enough for this in the design phase.»
- Grading should be more fairly distributed and motivated. »

- The forming of groups to the in-depth project phase can be better achieved, it was quite hard to know who to work with and why.»
