Your own effort

1. How many hours per week did you spend on this course?

We mean total time, that is, it comprises the time you spent in class and the time you spent on your own work. Try to estimate the average time over the entire study period.

Genomsnitt: 2.2

- More of the time the last few weeks with the seminars of course.» (Around 25 hours/week)

2. How large part of the teaching offered did you attend?

- I believed it was very important in this course to attend the classes. » (100%)
- The lectures were really interesting, so it was always with motivation that I went there» (100%)

Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

5 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»1 20%
The goals are difficult to understand»0 0%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»2 40%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»2 40%

Genomsnitt: 3

- It"s a general problem that syllabi don"t reflect course content. Nevertheless, Alessandro, made an effort to explain the contents and what differed from the syllabus, and based on that it was OK.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

4 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»0 0%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»4 100%
No, the goals are set too high»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2

- I did have to work alot, especially for the hot topic since I hadn´,t taken any courses in astrophysics. I would recommend that, but its definitely doable anyway.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

5 svarande

No, not at all»1 20%
To some extent»2 40%
Yes, definitely»2 40%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2.2

- I cannot see how it is possible to make a fair judgement of one"s knowledge of the course from only a presentation on something related to the subject. There"s a reason every other comparable course has written exams: to gauge knowledge you need to ask questions and ask for explanations ON THE RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE. » (No, not at all)
- The examination is about one specific topic. So, even though It refers to several chapters of the course, it is tricky to assume that I reached all the goals in every chapter..» (To some extent)

Teaching and course administration

- Alessandro teaches physics the way physics should be taught.» (Large extent)
- In this course the teaching was extremelly important. I founf the classes interesting and inspiering.» (Great extent)
- Alessandro was really willing to answer questions / explain things / help us. That"s one of the reasons why he"s such a great teacher!» (Great extent)

- The lecturer provided an excellent reference list.» (Some extent)
- Mostly the course notes and what I filled in during the classes» (Some extent)
- The lecture notes are quite concise. That"s ok, but if one wants to know more, then the references are a bit too numerous. It would be good to have 1 or 2 textbooks, then extra references for additional details.» (Some extent)
- good handouts» (Some extent)

8. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?

5 svarande

Very badly»0 0%
Rather badly»0 0%

Very well»4 80%

Genomsnitt: 3.8

- To not print out the lecture slides for us because “,it"s expensive”, is a poor excuse. (Just compare the cost of printing 10 x 10 sheets to the 2 h salary cost for the teacher.) There are many good reasons why the teacher shouldn"t print the lecture slides and hand them out to us, but seeing how he emphasized how important they were, the low cost of printing them would probably make it the most cost-efficient way to improve the students" knowledge.» (Rather well)
- It was good to get the next weeks notes in advance so I had a chance to look them over.» (Very well)
- Very organized and convenient, nothing else to add.» (Very well)

- The teamwork sessions were a failure. It"s a good idea, though, but sometimes I guess it just doesn"t work out.» (Rather poorly)
- The exercise groups created cooperation. Being such a small class creates intimacy also.» (Very well)
- It is always better to have a small class (meaning not too many students) to discuss things, and share ideas. Also, the teamwork helps a lot.» (Very well)

11. How was the course workload?

Summarizing questions

13. What is your general impression of the course?

5 svarande

Poor»0 0%
Fair»0 0%
Adequate»0 0%
Good»2 40%
Excellent»3 60%

Genomsnitt: 4.6

- This course got me to realy think about the physics and not get sstuck on small details, been a long time since I have had that. Knowledge from a lot of different couses is used which is great.» (Excellent)
- I learnt lots of things, in a friendly class atmosphere, with nice illustrative experiments, and without painful assignments or reports. So excellent impression.» (Excellent)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- the exerciseclasses, hot topic seminar, lecturer»
- - The teamwork is great. - The fact that we could read/print the lecture notes before the lectures - The seminar / trip to Onsala was nice. I"ve been there before already, but I still think it"s a good thing.»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- A written exam is needed. Contrary to what Alessandro says, I believe there are many excellent questions and problems suitable for examination. Explaining concepts like instabilities, shocks, and resonances would make for great questions, not least because Alessandro has emphasized intuitive understanding of the course material, rather than detailed knowledge of the mathematics, and explaining these concepts would really test this understanding and not just the ability to remember and juggle formulae.»
- cant really think of anything»
- - The teamwork was really good, but it ended too fast. A similar additional work focused on (e.g.) turbulence, or shocks, would be nice. Thinking about problems, and sharing ideas with classmates, help a lot to understand the physics. »

16. Additional comments

- The presentations are meant to teach us about a lot of stuff that there"s not enough time to bring up during the lectures. Well, they don"t work. If there"s not enough time to go through it in the lecture, then it most certainly isn"t enough with a pseudo-lecture on twenty minutes held by someone who"s completely inexperienced in holding lectures, doesn"t really know the subject, and is way too nervous because it"s not just a presentation for the audience, it"s their god damned exam. I"m sorry. It"s a nice idea, but it doesn"t work. It could, however, be worth a try to work to keep the projects but present them in a short written article. It would also be helpful if Alessandro provided a list of concepts relevant to the course. Because there is no course book and the slides only offer support to what Alessandro talks about, there is no way to prepare for lectures by reading up and looking up unfamiliar concepts and quantities before the lecture, so when he starts talking about stuff new to you, you get lost. In a perfect world, you"d interrupt him and ask for an explanation, but really, nobody does that. He does a fairly good job at explaining concepts, but he misses some. If we could have a list we could look at, it would make it easier to follow and prepare for the lectures. Examples include velocity dispersion, differential rotation, advection, etc. Naturally, such a list could also include all the concepts he DOES go through, as it"s hard to remember all the stuff all the time, plus that it would offer a great help in getting an overview of the course. Also, it would be nice with more open-ended questions for the teamwork sessions. As it is, it was too much calculation and too little discussion.»
- I loved this course. It made it fun to study physics again anf made me realise why I did in the first place. Also, Alessandro was great.»
