Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Automotive Engineering the students should be able to

•,,,,,,,, identify and discuss vehicles as complex systems from a technical and a social perspective through a broad platform in automotive engineering.

•,,,,,,,, analyse new technical challenges and to create technical advancements in the automotive industry by three specialisation tracks, Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics or Safety.

•,,,,,,,, synthesize and evaluate automotive systems and products in terms of direct use and lifecycle analysis through consideration of environmental and economic aspects.

•,,,,,,,, through applications and practice
o utilize automotive related IT- and product development tools.
o demonstrate skills necessary for managing and contributing to team-based engineering activities and projects in a multi-cultural environment.

Programme layout

The Automotive Engineering programme consists of one introduction course about automotive vehicles and industry followed by 3 courses, one from each of the areas of Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics and Safety. Last two mandatory courses are chosen from 2 of the 3 areas. Depending on preferences, the student can then take two extra courses within one or two of the specialisations.

- Passive safety should be in the safety track. » (Good)
- The course on Advanced Vehicle Aerodynamics should be offered to more number of students. Currently only 10 students can take that course whereas number of students interested is much higher.» (Good)
- The program has good flexibility, especially while choosing the two electives in the second year.» (Good)
- I would like to have a specialization exclusively for Active and Passive Safety - the main reason - I skipped safety specialization becuz i had to finish Adv.Passive Safety which was full of BIOLOGY ! » (Good)

- How to actually construct and build a car/engine!» (Yes)
- A good fluids course.» (Yes)
- - course measurement technique for automotive applications doesnt cover powertrain (mostly vehicle dynamics) would be nice if engine and aftertreatment system are included. - i was missing engine testing/calibration/optimization in any of the ICE courses. - » (Yes)

11. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

27 svarande

- Powertrain mechanics Better interaction between ICE and ICE advanced Hybrid and control » (?)
- Measurement Techniques - Should def be removed since the examinaner appears to have no time for it, and the content is repetition of old stuff or just irrelevant. » (Yes)
- I think the introduction course should focus on the areas not covered in the other courses. Combustion courses are quite good. Safety was to much biology, the only thing interesting in that course was the psychology, traffic behaviour etc. The dynamics courses are quite good even though there are a lot of derivations. I think the hybrid course was bad. It didnt give any understanding of the systems that were modelled. The powertrain course feels like its been put together in a haste, cancelled lectures, improvised lectures and so on. Some of the stuff is also very basic so a higher level is required. The aerodynamics are a lot of pictures of beautiful old cars. Not much substance.» (Yes)
- Measurement techniques» (Yes)
- The Measurement techniques course» (Yes)
- Active safety» (Yes)
- I think the powertrain course has to be mandatory. I think this is something that all automotive engineers should study. The Hybrid course is important, but could be treated as a specialisation course.» (Yes)
- Both the safety courses (in 2009) - I thought they did not add much to my knowledge. Active safety should have more info about CAN, signal processing, etc. and perhaps some exercises in Simulink, since that is the industry standard. And perhaps more ls dyna exercises in passive safety - you could include some component crash simulations.» (Yes)
- Vehicle Dynamics - Its one of the best courses i have taken so far. But the number of assignments and the exam schedule were too much to take. It would be great if we had a lot of assignments and no exam in the course. I personally learnt a lot from the assignments.» (Yes)
- 2 courses of advanced passive safety and advanced active safety are so poor and nonsence and amature. » (Yes)
- vehicle safety courses(passive and active),since they are offering to vehicle students with mechanical engineering background,it had better emphasize on designing related components like airbag, seat belt, seat, rear and front structure, compartments with the aim of crashworthiness and stuff like these instead of showing statistics of crashes and injuries which mostly are irrelevant.» (Yes)
- Vehicle dynamics needs to be improved. Powertrain can be better.» (Yes)
- Remove safety» (Yes)
- I think the automotive projects are tricky. they need clearer goals and more guidance from teachers. if no clear goals are given, nobody will do his best to reach the goals and learn something but just show up with some simple results just to pass the project. there is a high risk that some people dont contribute to the project and get some easy credits. the planning should be carefully checked for feasability at beginning and checked if group is on schedule during project. » (Yes)
- vehicle dynamics is a interesting subject but the lectures are very bad » (Yes) (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)
- 1. Introduction to Automotive engineering is a bit odd and way to basic. I don"t think any of the master programmes at IT has an introduction course teaching the students what a computer is or naval teaching their students what a ship look like. This course is way to basic. 2. The Measurement techiniques for automotive applications should be totally remade. » (Yes) (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)
- yes, remove the safety course» (Yes) (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)

12. Impressions of the Powertrain specialisation.

NOTE! Only answer this question if you attended at least 3 of the 4 mandatory courses in the Powertrain specialisation (Internal Combustion Engines, Hybrid Vehicles and Control, Internal Combustion Engines Advanced, Powertrain Mechanics).
What is your impression of the

Matrisfråga

- The hybrid course seems like it hasnt matured yet. Better planning in the powertrain course is needed.»
- Internal Combustion Engines Internal Combustion Engines Advanced Powertrain Mechanics»
- The advanced ICE course focused mostly on sprays and the research that is going on at Chalmers - you could include more practical aspects of engine performance, etc. Knowledge of sprays is only in the form of phenomena, so it is just theoretical knowledge.»
- practise? what practise?(except 2h engine lab sp1) Petter was the best teacher!»
- There are no practical exposure in this specialization. For that matter no practical exposure in any of the specialization tracks ! By practical i mean hands on experience.»
- teaching skills of teachers varies a lot, some are really good and some are really bad. teachers from the industry where often disappointing, which i was surprised about. undoubtebly their knowledge is great but often they cannot explain things clearly and are bad in presenting. often there is repetition of subjects. one guy from the industry tells this, the next one tells almost a similar thing. i would be nice if lecture content would be fitter better.»

- good courses, except for Measurement Techniques in Automotive Applications»
- Less theory in the dynamics courses and more in the aerodynamics could be nice.»
- I think it would be good if there are some additional problems using the Softwares like Adams or Dymola apart from just simulating in Matlab. This might give the student a pratical example of how the work is being carried in an Industry.»

15. What is your impression of the automotive project courses: Automotive Engineering Project, Chalmers EcoMarathon and Chalmers Formula Student?

Please comment your answer!

Matrisfråga

- CFS is probably the best experience i have from chalmers. Priceless when it comes to learning about reality.»
- Formula Student is the MOST important class i ever attended during my years at Chalmers. It has given me so much in terms of teori, practise and contacts.»
- I think everyone should be given an opportunity and not selecting by their experience. I would like to suggest a general examination to assess the capability of the applicant and there by conducting an interview who have succeeded in the examination. There are unequal proportion of students in these pojects as well, I see there are many International students in EcoMarathon and the opposite in Formula Student project. I request that there should be equal proportion of the Natives and the International Students in these projects. »
- The Eco Marathon should definitely be preserved as a course in the future but it would be good if someone could manage the course in the same way as Malin did with CFS. It"s a little bit to independent for now and needs some more managing with adequate goals.»
- Most of our time was wasted in trying to figure out how the system worked, from last year. We could have saved a lot of time if we had better support from last years" team members in showing us around the system in the first few weeks. This would have saved us a lot of time, and we could have used our time better. We also had no access to a proper place to test the engine/generators. The test setup in the electrical department was inconvenient, as the people were unwelcoming at best and hostile at worst. This was a very disappointing aspect of the project.»
- I have seen the examiner two times during the 10 project weeks!»
- I think the automotive projects are tricky. they need clearer goals and more guidance from teachers. if no clear goals are given, nobody will do his best to reach the goals and learn something but just show up with some simple results just to pass the project. there is a high risk that some people dont contribute to the project and get some easy credits. the planning should be carefully checked for feasability at beginning and checked if group is on schedule during project. »

- I think this year the Measurement Techiques for Automotive Applications Course mostly dealt with vehicle dynamics and less Safety.»
- The course on Advanced Vehicle Aerodynamics must be offered to all the interested students. »
- Specialisations will not be included in the exam papers as last year students. Was not informed by Malin, recived the information when I emailed here.»
- I think that own ideas for thesis should be more estimulated. »
- Information about projects could be improved (on the home page) - to include some more specific details.»
- The information came out very late»
- The coordinator of the program is always busy and not possible to reach at all, »
- elective courses info was available quite late project info was available quite late. theses info abour requirements for thesis, dates, needed documants/approvals was actually never given»

Many student´,s does not attend the automotive program and therefore makes it really hard to find suitible times for group-work, again the swedish automotive student is the one who has to do all the work! Some students speak end write english so bad that they refuse to do any writing on reports or to have a presentation with the group. Some nationalities works harder than others. The whole idea with forced-mixing of nationalities is a retarded idea. - too much matlab! » (Very poor)
- I did not have experience in programming but through the Introductory course and department courses I have gained a lot of experience» (Poor)
- I think it is important to learn how to use Matlab, but also, there are more tools that could be employed. For instance, Excel.» (Poor)
- an advanced course for matlab should be added to the programme since i know many students do not know this programming language especially international students including me ,still sufferung the shortage of knowledge in matlab. » (Poor)
- Its good because if you don"t know matlab, then you learn. But any way, you can do almost all in exel or any other spreadsheet, exepting only a couple of courses.» (OK)
- I wish someone had told me that I needed matlab before the course so I could have done some studying.» (Good)
- Although it was difficult for me initially, I picked it up over time, and I am now quite comfortable with it.» (Good)
- Since i have sufficient knowledge in "C" , Matlab was easy to understand. But it would be great if you can put up some information on the course page so that the new students are aware about it.» (Good)
- i didnt have any matlab skills, some programming skills though, but learned it by doing and i learned it quite quick i think. you should keep it like it is now. » (Excellent)

- Studying here has caused me to loose most of my interest in cars.» (Very Poor)
- Some of the courses doesnt feel like they live up to the standard at chalmers.» (OK)
- God except for some courses. Ensure course PM exists for all course, then it will be better.» (Good)
- Specialisation courses should be futhur improved with more practical oriented problems(laboratory exercises) or introduction to Software related problems.» (Good)

29. Considering your experience from this programme, would you choose this programme if you could turn back time?

- I would have choosen a program that gave me more knowledge about mechanics and then read some automotive-papers.» (No)
- without any doubts, i would choose 1 or 2 other courses though» (Yes)
- Depends on the cost. If 140000 is the yearly tuition I might have gone to the US or UK» (I do not know)
- I was choosing between automotive and solid and fluid. Hard to tell before i tried to get a job.» (I do not know)

30. Would an internship system have had any impact on your choice of masters programme?

In the future, there are prospects of enhanced collaborations with the industry at the end of the masters studies. For example, a few of the masters students at this program may be guaranteed summer job and/or a short term project employment with Volvo.

- It would be positive, but I would chose it anyway since it is in my interesst.» (No, not at all)
- I "feel" that it would be difficult for me to find a job in Sweden. Many international students go back home because they can"t find a job here.» (Yes definitely)
- would be great if chalmers helped us find some internships» (Yes definitely)
- More contacts with the industry could be appreciated.» (Yes definitely)
- Yes internships would definitely give the student a industrial experience. I feel Chalmers should introduce some kind of research and teaching assistanceships to the masters students. This would increase one"s chances of getting a Phd.» (Yes definitely)
- I think this is a great idea. Industry exposure is always a plus, atleast for those who would be interested in looking for a job after the masters.» (Yes definitely)
- Yes, and i can´,t see why this hasn´,t been done yet. This would make this program a whole lot better and provide us with experience. » (Yes definitely)
- i dont really get the question» (No opinion)

31. What should definitely be preserved?

- Powertrain specilization. Intro courses»
- Project courses as Formula Student and Eco marathon!!!!!»
- The connexion with the industry through guest teachers»
- All the specialization courses in Powertrain and Vehicle Dynamics»
- the labs are really useful, they have to be preserved.»
- The specializattion tracks.»
- the teachers are good and should teach the same courses»
- GT power in ICE Advanced. Include more assignments.»
- The practical parts, like the windtunnel, engine lab etc. Teachers: Petter, Lennart. »
- the programme"s layout »

32. What should definitely be changed?

- - Measurement techniques removed. - Better info about everthing that concerns us. - »
- Advanced Road Vehicle Aerodynamics should be given to every one who is interested.»
- More informations about master thesis in 2nd year»
- Please do not have restrictions on number of students that can take a particular course. Example: Advanced Aerodynamics course mentioned earlier.»
- the visiting lecturer should not be allow for the course lecture from industry every time the just only talk about their company and wasting time the lecture should be quit close. one thing more that during lecture the speed of speaking should be normal some times its very fast which is not good. I like Sven Andersson who si teaching Internal Combustion Engines (MTF240) Hybrid Vehicles and Control (TME095) I like the way of teching of this teacher and I learn alot from him.»
- Better and earlier information about courses and projects.»
- There are lots of compuetr labs at MT0 MT9 MT11,... in the basement and those rooms are very isolated and without any window and staying in those rooms for a long time had very bad effects on me.»
- The way vehicle dynamics is taught.»
- the automotive project»
- Difficult to understand Arjan when presenting information at lectures! Powertrain mechanics course: Skip hybrid, change differentials part. Expand Vehicle Aerodynamics advanced course.» (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)
- The number of assignments ust be decreased! The safety course has very little to do with what we should be learning. All lectures has concisted of power-points. Looking, back, we did not use more than 1-2 books in total but had to buy a lot of them anyway...» (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)

33. Additional comments

- I came to sweden because of safety and Chalmers safety staff are so isolated form the campus johaneberg and havae their own work and so busy. the safety courses are so basic and untouchable and full of biology and anatomy and in active safet they are just telling story and basic slides.»
- So far, I don"t know how can I be useful as an automotive engineer. If it is needed to work on areodynamics, a solid and fluyds mech. engineer is going to be requested. If it is needed some buddy to develop an electronic driving assistance, a mecatronics engineer is asked for. If it is needed to develop a component or a new system, a product development guy is more suitable. The only thing I know is what vehicle dynamics is about and how a gearbox works. How is it useful?»
