Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Solid and Fluid Mechanics the students should be able to

-formulate mechanical engineering problems as mathematical models.

-use advanced topics regarding mathematical modelling as well as computational and experimental techniques relevant for the specialized tracks.

-show insight and ability to work in teams and collaborate in groups with different compositions.

-be able to give written and oral presentations of their conclusions and knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

5. How understandable are the programme goals?

31 svarande

The goals are difficult to understand»0 0%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»6 19%
The goals are clear enough»25 80%

Genomsnitt: 2.8

6. Are the goals reasonable for a master degree?

Yes, the goals seem reasonable»30 96%
No, the goals are a bit high»1 3%

7. Are these goals fulfilled within the group of mandatory courses?

These courses are Mechanics of solids and fluids, Computations in mechanics, Project in applied mechanics.

Yes, definitely»15 55%

Genomsnitt: 3.37

- I think that we have had one presentation which i dont think is good enough if you want to be profficient of that. It would be better to skip it entirely or to have many moore. And I dont know what is meant by non-specialist.» (Almost)
- A course in more applied code-writing would be nice.. Make OpenFOAM part of the fluid-programme, it was the best course of my master studies» (Almost)

Programme layout

The masters programme in Solid and Fluid Mechanics consists of two compulsory corses in the first quarter and the compulsory "Project course" in quarter four. Besides that, there are courses in quarter two and three that are compulsory for each track.

8. What do you think of the programme layout?

31 svarande

Poor»0 0%
Rather poor»1 3%
OK»7 22%
Good»21 67%
Very good»2 6%
No opinion»0

Genomsnitt: 3.77

- perhaps a solid course would be good to have as mandatory for the fluid track. and vice verca» (OK)

9. Is it a good thing to have 3 mandatory courses?

31 svarande

There should be less»2 6%
It is OK»23 74%
There should be more»6 19%
No comment»0

Genomsnitt: 2.12

- I do not think that the project course should be mandatory.» (There should be less)
- I think to call is Masters in Solid and Fluid mechanics. there should be mandatory courses from both tracks so that it qualifies more to be called masters in solid and fluid mechanics. » (There should be more)

10. Should there be a more pronounced emphasis on BOTH solid and fluid mechanics?

This could be achieved by further compulsory courses for all programme students within both fields. Expected outcome would be engineers with better overall knowledge in both fields, at the expense of deeper knowledge within each specialisation.

31 svarande

There should be less»2 6%
It is OK as it is»19 63%
There should be more»9 30%
No opinion»1

Genomsnitt: 2.23

- I think it is good that it is possible to choose courses from both fields, but it should not be mandatory to do so. Master students are old enough to decide whether they want specialist knowledge within one field or if they want a broader overall knowledge.» (It is OK as it is)
- Of course it is good to know more about the other track but I think that would have to be the students choice. » (It is OK as it is)

11. Do you miss a course or a topic in the master programme?

31 svarande

Yes»11 35%
No»20 64%

Genomsnitt: 1.64

- biomechanics» (Yes)
- A course with a commercial FE program (the project course does not count since the program was almost impossible to use)» (Yes)
- More useful programs such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, COMSOL.» (Yes)
- I would like to learn more programming, e.g. in C++.» (Yes)
- more fatigue-design courses and more vibration courses» (Yes)
- A cfd course explaining it"s downfalls in more depth than the CFC course do today.» (Yes)
- there is no courses in constrained optimization » (Yes)
- A course in object oriented code writing, like C++ for instance. Matlab is not used by software development companies, and I think that the students from Applied Mechanics should be able to apply for those kind of positions.» (Yes)
- Ā course where You learn to apply your knowledge to specific case. This seem to be requested from the industry» (Yes)
- A even more applied fluid course would"ve been nice» (Yes)

12. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

30 svarande

Yes»9 30%
No»21 70%

Genomsnitt: 1.7

- fundamental structural mechanics was a bit to hard for me because i didn"t have to right "pre-knowledge"» (Yes)
- Computations in mechanics and Mechanics of solids and fluids should focus less on the fluid applications. The project course could be removed.» (Yes)
- Advanced material mechanics» (Yes)
- The project course is not good in its present form.» (Yes)
- The compulsory project course. The organization was not the best and it was not a good idea to also take in the group dynamics part/value model. Better to just focus on the technical part. » (Yes)
- Material mechanics should be heavily revised. » (Yes)
- Rigid body dynamics! The project in that course is not good, up to 60 pages of hand-written equations (!?) takes all of the focus from the actual content of the course so that we don´,t have time to learn the theory. I know that the project is suppose to reflect the course content but you do not learn it by applying it to ONE case. » (Yes)
- "Computations in Mechanics" should be revised, to make it more clear to the students.» (Yes)
- Multiphase flow needs structure and to be coupled with a course literature book. » (Yes)

17. What is your opinion of the information as a current student within the program ?

Information about programme layout, specialisations, elective courses, theses.

- But the scheme that tells which courses that are compulsory or optional for the different specialisations could be much clearer»
- Update the homepage on regular basis. It is embarrassing that a technical university like Chalmers, does not take this seriously. Old thesis are still there etc.»

29. Would an internship system have had any impact on your choice of masters programme?

In the future, there are prospects of enhanced collaborations with the industry at the end of the masters studies. For example, a few of the masters students at this program may be guaranteed summer job and/or a short term project employment with Volvo.

30. What should definitely be preserved?

- The mandatory courses are key to the course. i would like them there and the order is good. keep it . »
- Everything»
- Organisation of lectures in programme schedule should definitely be preserved.»
- The competence of the teachers, most of them have very good pedagogical skills»
- The courses in the fluid dynamics track is very good and I think it is better to be preserved.»

- Free universities»

31. What should definitely be changed?

- more info about tracks and course choices»
- i would prefer to have more mandatory courses form both tracks. »
- Less Matlab»
- Nothing»
- We should have more emphasize on lab work and use of commercial softwares.»
- Maybe some teachers could try to have more interactive lectures. The OpenFOAM-course is an excellent example of that. Also, in turbulent flow, CFD and turbulence modelling: When an equation is derived, it is done together with the students on a blackboard instead of powerpoint-lectures.»
- SOme elective courses.»
- Multiphase flows»

32. Additional comments

- Thanks for such good courses and i hope in future i return the favor by bringing good name to the School in general and this course in particular. »
- No comments»
- More information from the courses on the course homepage, so that information can be taken in even if i haven"t been on lectures.»
- I think that some courses are much simpler to pass than others since some courses give credit points for the exam and others have an equal amount of work in the computer assignmnents but no credit points.»
- I had very less interaction with classmates. we should have had more group work. It would have been nice to work together on few more projects or assignments. Unfortunately I had less interaction with swedish class mates as they already had their friends to work with. Hence I didn"t had much chance to work with them. I rather worked a lot with erasmus students. »
- If it is possible, the variety of elective courses is increased.»
- I would personally do not advise anybody to come here and pay money for education because 1- it is too high 2- there is no guarantee to have job afterward! 3- Sweden is non-English country! have to learn Swedish first!»
