About the course

5. The Project Management Basics module

Matrisfråga

- The way of teaching basics was not really interesting nor useful: some good ppt would be enough to get the basics.»
- Missed the first two weeks so can"t say anything about the Basics lectures»
- Spelling mistakes on slides, while not stopping one from understanding, distracts. Ulrika"s presentation were mostly a recitation of the slides, which didn"t add much to the understanding.»
- Jan, I like your storys but sometimes i just don"t see where you"re going. I guess it"s the engineer in me that"s talking and it wants facts not some philosophical explication. Anyway, it gets easier after a while, just beware of the problem. Ulrika, good job on the lectures, you"re doing great. If I could give you some advise I would say keep practicing and don"t be afraid to use the slides more as main points. That should make you"re lectures even better and more interesting to the once attending. (otherwise there"s a risk that people feel that they could as well read the slides without missing anything.)»
- Ulrikas needs to improve her style or way to teaching to be more attractive (audience needs to hear rather than read during the lecture) She has provided a very good materials that helped us in the basic test exam... also this materials was helpful to understand it when you read it by your self... but Jans materials for the basic test wasn"t that helpful to read & understand after the lecture, on the other hand, I can remember many thinks from his lectures because of his way of teaching...»
- the effective way to earn knowledge in the course is reading book, because it`s systematic. But the works in Maylor`s book are not refined»
- It was good to read the lecture hand-outs, but mostly as repetition because I already had attended the lectures.»
- much helped me understand the basics but not everything»
- Ulrika felt a bit too insecure and kept looking at Jan (during the basic lectures) all the time to confirm that what she said was correct.»
- Ulrika does not exactly radiate confidence when she is presenting.»
- Jans lecture is excellent its help me a lot to understand the concepts of Project Management.»
- Was not registered for the course so did not attend PM basics.»
- I really like Jan"s teaching style, but somehow I"m not use to his accent, and his sense of humour. It happens as everyone else is laughing and I don"t know what"s the point. I guess it"s because of my culture background is different. I"m from China by the way. I would prefer if he can highlight his point again after he told the joke.»

6. The Lectures

There are two questions for each topic. Content means "the contents of this lecture were relevant", and Presentation means "the lecturer made a fine effort of presenting the contents"

Matrisfråga

- The shadow systems lecture seemed interesting but the way of teaching it was way to complicated and technical.»
- Power and leadership - too much information in too little time, though very interesting Jan"s presentations of facts and their conclusions could at times be too quick or the jumps too far for one to follow. Maybe background knowledge is assumed that I students have but IT students lack?»
- Wow, the pentagon wars is now one of my favorite movies! You must keep this to the next year!»
- The lecture was good and bad. Giving examples is good but the slide is too small to help understand later. Some one should be in class to understand the contents. Erlika content was better.»
- Even ifif Jans lectures materials had some weaknesses, he had a really good way to provide examples and to inspire the audience (I mean suppose that it has some weakness, we can"t judge the materials to some extent, but I"m very satisfied, his materials provide me with a really good knowledge )»
- it`s a long time ago that I can not remember clearly»
- Unfortunately i could not attend for the movie Pentagon Wars»
- Could have discussed the parts of the course a lttle more.»
- Really good lectures!»
- In general very good presentations. The presentation material contains several slides with a lot of pictures and little text, they are hard to use in the essays because you feel you need to be very exact in what was said. »
- I think those lectures and slids are all very good.»

7. The Organizing Case (David Loid)

Matrisfråga

- Excellent teacher»
- For a basic project management course I would have preferred to have the focus on projects rather than whole organizations. Although a general picture is good to have, this could have been presented during a lecture. The seminar, while good, could have been improved by breaking the group into smaller units to encourage discussion. As it was now, a few of the attending students answered most of the questions. Good mix of summary of case, presentation of facts, reflection and connection with the real world.»
- Still the engineer within me asks "when will he get to the point"»
- The lecture was with out slide and it was like a guest lecture. It was good to discuss but we need some more presentation to understand everything.»
- I think there were paper but of some do not get more information about essay . i think selection paper was not good»
- The case lecture was well presented: he could manage in a very good way to present the lecture when his laptop couldn"t be used to present the slides... (I think that he did that by intention ,) )»
- good I like this one»
- It could be somewhat shorter as you tend to loose focus after a while»
- The cas seminar was very useful,i learned from David Loid how to have a good analysis about the organization structure and policy»
- The grading criteria of assignment was not clear that we have to use article"s to get a better grade.»

8. The Planning Case (Per Svensson)

Matrisfråga

- The task seemed a bit too ambiguous at first and it took us a lot of time to narrow it down to what we could do.»
- The seminar could have been improved by arranging the students in one big circle instead of normal class room layout or by breaking the group into smaller units to encourage discussion. As it was now, a few of the attending students answered most of the questions. The seminar was mostly a summary of students" conclusions on the case. An improvement would have been to also connect the conclusions with the presented material and show how it fitted in the bigger picture.»
- Not really sure what I thought about the case lecture, not sure that we really needed info about how to use MS project. I would probably have enjoyed a more general lecture on planning.»
- oh really this part were good part but that project management soft ware designing could be useful if instead of introduce soft ware and doing theoretical example describe one practical sample with doing at class. I think the marked paper is not OK too »
- The case lecture content was relevant: the guy how came from Mircosoft to teach us about the Mic office project 2007 tool wasn"t an expert in using this tool, he is a seller not a PM that knows how to play with the tool. The content for how to use this tool was enough. The case seminar was chaired in a good way: didn"t follow your way or Divids way, but he could manage to enforce the students to communicate with him:), he had a good way on gathering the information connecting it to some extend to the solution. Ambiguity: he asked us to provide a solution for the case in order to finish the project in 127 day (I asked him personally about this), and to provide a solution according to our plan which we made by using the MicOffice project 2007, but I noticed later on (I mean in the seminar) that we should use the tool to input the data and to to argue against the situation.. ( unfortunately I"ve provided both solutions in the exe file but I argued for the changes that I had made according to my point of view, thus I couldn"t contact him to check the lower marks that I got)»
- I could not attend for the case seminar because i could not find the lecture hall, unfortunately i missed it...»
- The content of the case lecture was to basic, we had already done those basic things in MS Project since the report should be handed in soon after the case lecture. We wanted more hints of how to reason around the plan, not how to make the plan.»
- The grading criteria from case examinar is quite narrow. There are a lot of possible ways for the solution, to achieve goal in the real world. »

9. The Contracting Case (Ulrika Badenfelt)

Matrisfråga

- The seminar could have been improved by breaking the group into smaller units to encourage discussion. As it was now, a few of the attending students answered most of the questions. The seminar was mostly a summary of students" conclusions on the case. An improvement would have been to also connect the conclusions with the presented material and show how it fitted in the bigger picture. Better planning could have improved the chairing of this seminar. Ulrika needs to believe in herself. Otherwise the relationship student-tutor will suffer.»
- I like the way Ulrika divided the group into smaller groups where we could discuss the different problems. It was more rewardning than the two before.»
- seminar and case assignment about contract was useful »
- She did much better than the what she did in the basic test part, but still needs improve her way»
- it seems did not give a final solution»
- We had a very big group on the case seminar (friday) which made it difficult to have all-class discussions.»

10. The Learning Case (Jan Wickenberg)

Matrisfråga

- Great articles but the way to discuss them during the seminar didn"t convince me.»
- Very interesting topic. I especially liked the first part of the seminar. The case lecture was especially relevant since no other information was presented that treated the subject directly. It was never spelled out clearly what (individual and organizational) learning was. It was not until I read the article on Wikipedia I had a good definition of the concept. Second part of the seminar was only a summary of the case, could have been better connected to the first part of the seminar, which was good. Also, letting everybody writing problems and solutions was waste of time. Though the following exercise of acting as representatives for Holm was good. This case was totally different compared to the other cases. While the first three were simply a matter of making an analysis and drawing conclusions from the analysis, this case was on a whole other level, which made it hard to know what we were supposed to do. Working with cases is not very common on the IT-programme, which made the first case a lesson in how to write a case essay. When the last didn"t follow the pattern set by the first three, this was confusing.»
- When it comes to the assignment: Way Too Much Information For One Person To Handle. I get why you wanted all the articles, because the were really good but still, I had huge troubble getting through them all. The assignment felt a little bit like an english assignment but it was ok. The seminar, WOW, that I enjoyed! It all felt like a psychologic experiment on how groups share knowledge and interact with one another. It made me start thinking and i guess that was what it was supposed to do. Not sure though if everyone else got the same aha-moment.»
- This was probably the hardest case. It was especially hard to figure out what the questions asked for. »
- this was one difficult part to because there were more paper and less time to read them i think this case essay "NASA " was not good »
- The case lecture was well presented: I had a presentation for a group project (RE), therefore I couldn"t attend the first 80 min.»
- much discussion , effective »
- I felt that it was too much material to read.»
- The case seminar student groups were organaized very interesting, and i found it very useful.»
- Very good and well-prepared case seminar!»
- There was much to read. and the sense-text was too complicated.»
- Jan, to be honest, I didn"t get your idea (or say what you are tryint to teach us) during the seminar. But I dare not to ask, because I think that"s not nice to you. It"s very good for you to let ourselves to think about questions. But I"m not sure about those thoughts in the end.»

11. The course administration

Matrisfråga

- Why you don"t make use of the standardized timeedit schedule is beyond me.»
- Administrated admiratively»
- Really liked the weekley e-mails because it made me sure that I haven"t forgotten any important date and instructions»
- The ical-feature is built into TimeEdit. Why use external tool? Makes administration of my schedule harder since not all information regarding courses is in the same place. The organization of the files under hand-outs was at times confusing or non-existent.»
- I was sceptical to the i Calendar at first but it turned out to be great. Keep doing the weekly e-mails, they"re great.»
- Absolutely love the on-line web schedule!»
- I think this course is more and large course. the period of this course take 2 quarter it will be useful because every student usually have a 2 course in ever quarter and this case have more material and handing for doing if the adjust .»
- at the first 3-4 weeks there was some confusion about where exactly u were putting the content(you didn"t follow the folders structure that you have did) but later on it was managed perfectly. Satisfied»
- it is blameless, that I really can get all the information»
- I use google calendar in combination with an Android device, so the iCal format worked verry well for me.»

- Since the case lecture was presented on Monday and the due date was early on Wednesday, you only had ~1½, day to write the essay, even though you were supposed to have 1 week to work on it. (You could read the papers, but it was said that you need to attend the lecture before you could write anything)» (Adequate)
- The learning case was very heavy» (High)
- Pretty high, forced you to learn stuff all the time. Good way to prepare for the examination.» (High)
- As I read another course with high workload it was hard to keep up in all the cases» (High)
- It was alright. I think the home exam was way to heavy for the ammount of time we got. Had to spend 22h straight infront of the computer to be able to finish it in time» (High)
- Not spending the week-ends on the course and being two in the case group made the workload somewhat high.» (High)
- Really high in comparisson to other courses. I barely had time for my other course. But still, I enjoyed it because I learned a lot.» (High)
- High, but managable. I guess reading and analysing the articels was quite time consuming. » (High)
- High workload during the course, but nice that it was evenly spread out during the course. In most courses the workload increases to a maximum just before the exam (with to some extent depends on individual bad planning...)» (High)
- had an another course with high workload at the same time which was a problem» (High)
- When the parallel course had a major group assignment hand it it was tough (same week as case learning)» (High)
- The workload is heavy for me, those writing assignments are something I"m not familiar with, expecially the home exam, almost killed me.» (High)
- A lot to do less to gain. There was no one who can supervise us on how we should continue. The course support was lose. No one told you what you have to.The review section find it unimportant according the past term. We should be told what our mistakes was and we should get a feed back to the next case. The reality was not like that. You just go and all only talks that no grade change is possible. And this was a bit disappointing. When we do something we work for good and if we do not get a good feedback on what we have done, we feel down. SO this did not create a good moral for students. And the burden was high, it looks it was done with out a good consideration. At Chalmers we have 2 months to work on and we shoudl take two courses. This course was so busy to handle it within this time. So you should consider that there are a lot to do. And the markings disappoints students. » (Too high)
- I wanted at the first three assignments to gain much more knowledge by working alone, I could but under pressure. at the last assignment I didn"t have enough time beside the conflicts that I had to finalize the another course"s project. MY recommendation: 1. you should specify the groups randomly in order to prevent the monopolization of the knowledge, guys teamed up based on who they are comfortable with (smart will work with smart and stupid will work with stupid, this means for me that your are thinking about the grades not about how to share the knowledge,) ), but in reality you can"t choose your team members unless you ware the manager who hires the employees, and students should manage. 2. students might work lonely under a specific cases only» (Too high)
- I`ve never taken a course with so much workload. Meterials should be more refined and concise. It took too long time to read and leads to be inefficient» (Too high)
- If this would have been the only course then it would be fine but in combination with the Requirements Engineerin course the workload was too high. I was at school from 10.00 to 22.00, 7 days per week from where we had the first case until the home exam was turned in. » (Too high)
- Eventhough we have got a lot of knowledge and know how from this course, there must be some other ways to solve this.» (Too high)
- It was really too much work load. For me it was more like training for being able to stay awaked the night before the deadline for each hand-in. I also think » (Too high)

- I worked really hard and I managed to learn a lot but sadly my grades won"t reflect the learning I had.» (Good)
- It was good even though I am not aiming for a career as project manager but more towards software architect» (Good)
- The content could have been more focused toward IT-students. The difference in teaching skills between the lecturers leaves some to be desired, which makes the overall grade of the course somewhat lower. Why no questions on the home exam? And why was it distributed at 9.55 when previous information had indicated 12.00? It"s hard to make people discuss in larger groups. That is true for both lectures and seminars.» (Good)
- I can say the intention is good. And i was happy to be part of the course. But the process in the middle make you not to end up interested. So you should think of this for the next students. They should not get the problem as we had. » (Good)
- I definitely learned a lot in this course, not only knowledge in management but also in thinking and writing. However, it took me too much time, and I`m always nervous because everything is graded. » (Good)
- The content is excellent but the high workload lowers the overall impression. » (Good)
- But extremely hard» (Good)
- I have learned so much from this course and I really appreciate it but the workload and grading criteria needs to be improved.» (Good)
- Every thing is good except the parts that had to do with Per Svensson.» (Good)
- One of the better courses I"ve had during my time on Chalmers.» (Excellent)
- Really good! Probably one of my top-5-courses.» (Excellent)
- One of the best courses I"ve taken» (Excellent)
- Content and structure were atractive» (Excellent)
- I would suggestion someone to take this course, because I think it"s very nice, I really can learn not only thoeries, but some really understandings from those cases. But Jan"s accent and sense of humour somethimes are too good for me to understand.» (Excellent)
- The course has been really inspiring and changed the way I see many things. It required more work than I wanted to allocate, so it left me quite exhausted as well, but I definitely recommend it to anyone.» (Best course ever)
- I linked it so much, I haven"t study ever in my life studied a course and enjoined it such this one. » (Best course ever)
- I don"t think I have ever learnt so much relevant thing in just one course!» (Best course ever)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The seminars»
- The way of introducing cases to build up confidence for the home exam.»
- Everything except Per.»
- The cases»
- The cases and deviding up the course in diffrent parts»
- The text book»
- the pentagon wars!!! I"ve recommended it to all my friends who work as PMs =)»
- The course should be preserved and the case in some way it is good to be kept. But for student like us with engineering background, you should show them how to write the case analysis so that they can enjoy the course.»
- Everything! I learned so much from the different cases.»
- The cases is a good idea»
- Case studies»
- Different lecture »
- seminars»
- Everything as it is, except what I mentioned in Q15»
- the case studies. »
- Jan"s lectures and stories Case seminars»
- The cases! A very good way of learning.»
- The cases worked well for getting a deeper understanding around the area of project management. »
- The way of learning by cases»
- The seminars. It was highly relevant and should be carried out as part of the course»
- the cases»
- the cases was very useful, i think it helps a lot, they should defenitely be preserved»
- The cases»
- case study»
- Jan Wickenberg. The basic test early in the course to "get rid of" the basics and make room for more advanced theories»
- Contents of the course.»
- The case seminar is very helpful for reviewing the theories and the practical usages, and also through discussion some new ideas are very inspiring.»
- The case assignments were interesting and was a new way of learning for me that was pretty good. The homeexam was good and made me think alot and learn while writing it.»
- Jan Wickenberg, home exam on max 6 pages over 24 hours»
- case assignmants»
- The cases, they helped me to reflect over the problems in a way that i shouldn"t do if there were only lectures and an exam. The weekly e-mails, I felt more connected to the course and the course material.»
- The cases»
- The lectures and the case studies»
- The quality of lecture should nbe kept the same for the next year as weel»
- Jan"s inspiring lectures»
- The case structure of the course, and the home exam.»
- The lectures can be increased. »
- The work with the cases.»
- seminar seems fun, and learn a lot»
- Jan and David did a very good job with the lectures and case seminars.»
- The case study should be preserved. It is a practical way to study the knowledge from the course.»
- The cases were really interesting»
- case assignments»
- Those case studies are really good, should keep that. Another one is Jan"s teaching style, very impressive and funny, really like it, even I couldn"t understand a big part of those jokes.»
- The Learning case seminar»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- More convesational contexts»
- I liked the cases where you had chance to discuss in smaller groups before presenting it to class.»
- Vice Versa to 14.»
- The 24-hour exam. To my mind, Two big open questions are not really relevant to check whether a student has understood the course or not.»
- The amount of litterature was a little to much on the cases.»
- The home exam be extended to 48h»
- More focus could have been put on IT-projects since this is what we most probably will work with in the future. Adding some notes to picture-only slides. It"s hard to remember everything from the pictures alone when reviewing the slides.»
- The assignments you should give directions properly before giving the assignments, especially the articles are very intense and so many for a student with no background of project management to understand and analyze in a short time,i think you should consider that students are taking this course to know hoe to manage projects but with the articles and the case they are challenged to as if they are already project managers and this creates an intense and feel not belonging in the environment. »
- I don"t know what to change but i think that the workload was a bit too high. Perhaps tone down the importance of the seminars, in order to decrease the workload. Inform people about the basic test much earlier (e-mail?), because now we hade little more than 1 week to study (not that it was really that hard but it would take some preassure of). the home exam, I liked having a 24h home exam (because you"re done with it pretty quick) but not on the same freakin" day as my other exam!! I know that u gave us 6 more hours but I"m sorry to say that is not really enough. I"m completely knackered after 4h at another exam and 2 extra hours is not enough for me to recover.»
- The review time for assignment should be changes. Once you are there to support some one you should give good support and tell what was wrong in detail, so that the student can improve and understand what his/her problem was.»
- One thing that can be changed is having the case lectures a bit earlier and also it would have been nice if the deadline for the cases was wednesday evening rather than wedenesday morning»
- Ensure that every one has access to the course book before having the basics test. The retest should also be well before exams»
- Presentation of lectures»
- the period of course be 2 Quarter instead of one quarter »
- take home exam deadline»
- as I mentioned before, random groups, students must team up they not to work alone, and for the planning assignment you should bring an expert to teach about the tool not a seller. one more thing is to decrease the materials for the last assignment or to start the first assignment early so that students can have enough time to manage different courses »
- workload should be reduced. literatures shoud be reconsidered because some of them are really too complex and not useful. it`s a waste of time to read»
- The grading of the case studies should be more clear. We just know that get 0-10 marks, but nobody know the meanings of the numbers until after the second or the third case.»
- Maybe the cases could have a larger influence on the final grade since it was more work then the points justified.»
- Some cases had too much material to go through. The basic test was based on the whole book but where this material was not adequately presented. More time should be given on the home exam. I sat 24 hours straight with it.»
- The workload of the cases :(»
- I do not find anything that has to be changed. The course was organized and carried out well»
- Perheps more itme on prepering on the basics module, had problem getting the book on time (Got it 2 days after the test, had to borow a friends).»
- the deadline for case essay hand-ins, it would be better to determine it for noon, rather thsn morning, it is just a suggestion»
- The home exam, dont have it between 12 and 12, better to start at 8»
- none»
- The case lectures could be held a little earlier. As it was now, we had to use all whole-day Tuesdays to write case reports (even if we started before the case lectures). It is nicer to be able to plan the time regarding to other courses etc.»
- Greading criteria of assignments and workload. »
- The way of doing seminar may be a little difficutl for those who do not prefer to speak puublicly, so maybe small group discussion is better.»
- Some of the case contents were either hard to understand or did not feel important. Most of the seminars felt like a waste of time if they didnt spawn new ideas that you did not find out during the assignment.»
- too much to read with each assignment»
- preparation for "dugga"»
- Nothing special. »
- Have the case lecture earlier.»
- nothing special»
- I would say the workload must be definitely reduced. It should be considered that this is not usually the only course that students have during the period. One more thing, the time between a case lecture and the deadline for that case should be increased. I usually got the clue about how I should wrie for each case after the lecture. Having only one the day to revise my writings was not enough for me. I also don"t see any point in havinh deadline at 8 in the morning. It should be either at midnight ot in the evening.»
- Ulrika and Per"s seminars. Everything was just forces and not inspiring.»
- The course should be presented by Jan and he should be responsible for the course.»
- Everything that relates to Per Presentation style of Ulrika »
- Lots of articles to read we dont have enough time to read the articles so it can be changed next year.»
- The home exam. I felt i needed atleast 48 hours»
- A little more time between case lecture on Monday and case deadline on Wednesday. Normally we start to discuss after the case lecture, and start to write next day. so it would be nice the deadline is set to some time at Wednesday evening.»
- The schedule should be the same between student portal and homepage. The case registration should be changed simpler.»
- home exam duration should be expanded»
- Just one suggestion: can we get feedback about our assignments, such as good side and week points?»
- the seminar structure in the contracting and planning seminars»

16. Additional comments

- Job well done!»
- It would have been good to get a little more information, e.g. about the gradings etc»
- Good course, kinda heavy but it felt meeningful and it feels like I can use the content in the future»
- The answer boxes are too small to get an overview and why is a fixed-width font used? »
- Thank you for the wonderful experience»
- It was overall a good course i must say, the cases were good in understanding problems.»
- difficulty quotation in first basic exam was not like 2 section basic exam because more exam quatain was nor related with course slid and donot spek about them 3 quation in second basic exam were teaching at class and werenot in course hand in»
- Try to be more specific in the assignments about what exactly you want from us to do. Planning and Learning assignments had some ambiguity, please try to be more specific about what your want and try to avoid articles that doesn"t help us so much.»
- the first principle: to learn project management, we should be managed first»
- I"m more like an engineer person, I still not like PM, but I think this was a good PM course for those who interested in it»
- A very good and useful course. Thank you!»
- Both this course and the Requirements Engineering course where "first time" courses. During both of these courses emphasis was put on that we are master students now. I personally feel that too much emphasis was put on this where even if we are master students that doesn"t make us less human. (The student Syndrome was not the problem here)»
- I think a short feedback is helpful for students after each case, coz not all the students are available to take the office hour.»
-
- Really good impersion of the course.»
- Thank you very much, the course was totally useful.»
- excellent teacher, good case study, i learnt more from this course»
- Very good course! Will recomend it to other students.»
- I understand the reason of having seminars after the assignment hand-in, but sometimes it is frustrated if I know what I missed to present in the paper and I have no way to make up, especially if the grade is lower than the effort I put into the assignment. So I think maybe some extra assignments could be distributed for volunteers who want to improve their grades.»
- Overall a good course.»
- It was a good course and no bigger changes is needed in my opinion»
- over all a very interesting course»
- This course is more good which gives practical knowledge for the student. »
- A really good and interesting course!»
- This course is a good way to study project management and gives the way to practise from the case study. It is better to have the electronic edition of Maylor"s book.»
- Jan, sorry about to metion it again, but can you try to speak using American accent like other professors?»
