Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

Genomsnitt: 2.66

- Have forgotten them.» (I have not seen/read the goals)
- The goals of the photonics part of the course are very unclear. Otherwise, no problems.» (The goals are difficult to understand)
- Course goals became clearer after the exam» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

14 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»3 21%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»10 71%
No, the goals are set too high»1 7%

Genomsnitt: 1.85

- In the beginning of the course it was very basic, Gymnasie-level of the optics for exemple. Snells law should be a well known fact for a fourth year college student.» (No, the goals are set too low)

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

14 svarande

No, not at all»0 0%
To some extent»7 50%
Yes, definitely»3 21%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»4 28%

Genomsnitt: 2.78

- It is impossible to examine the whole stuff.» (To some extent)
- Microwave part was more predictable how ever it seemed that photonics part was completely different than what we had learn in the lectures.» (To some extent)

- Actually, as far as the microwave part of the course is concerned i strongly believe that it could be better to be presented in the blackboard rather than with slides. It is really hard to follow and understand equations by that way.» (Some extent)
- I learn a lot by listening. But I feel that the teaching to some extent has been rather poor. Hans is totally occupied with his slides and he often just repeats the words already written on them. He also didn"t write the slides himself and that adds to his confusion. When there is a question for him he often goes back to the slide and read the words on it again. Very non flexible. I feel that it would work much better if he skipped his slides and did his teaching on the black board. Becaouse then he would have to prepare better! Jörgen had Fourier methods, he started the lecture saying that Fourier is boring. If that is his opinion he should keep it to himself. It is his job to make it sound interesting and funny to us students. How motivated do we get to learn something that both Jörgen and Sheila think is boring? » (Large extent)
- Some parts of the course, especially the parts dealing with Maxwell"s equations and calculation of TE/TE/TEM modes were taught a bit fast and maybe with insufficient depth. » (Large extent)
- The teachers make the course really interesting» (Great extent)

7. To what extent has the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?

- Handouts of photonics part in the web page were quite mixed.» (?)
- The planning of the course has been a bit off. The times between lectures and tutorials on the same subject has been to separated (in wireless). I also feel that there wasn"t a clear distinction between lectures and tutorials in the photonics part. It almost feels like we didn"t have any photonics tutorials at all. There also has been some troubles with the schedule. Confusions which teacher who should hold which lecture and that has resulted in at least two mixups and poorly prepared teachers. Hans ended one lecture at half time when he realized that he had no idea what he was talking about. The students realized this after 5 min of that lecture. Again the slide-reading problem...» (Rather badly)
- The fact that the lectures are not uploaded to the website before the class is, in my opinion, a bad idea. I respect that the professors want the class to be focused on their explanations, but in turn, we try to reflect in our own notes their explanation and these notes, we cannot bring them to the examination. It would be better to have the lecture notes uploaded beforehand, so we could complement the material we can bring to the exam with the explanations in the class.» (Rather badly)
- To my opinion it would be better for the students to have the solutions for collin"s book and additional exercises more earlier. We had them in the last week and there was little time left before start studying for the first course"s exam.» (Rather well)
- It seemed that they were scattered in the course homepage. They could have been in some order» (Rather well)

- The MUD card is an excellent idea and Hans and Sheila are really helpful in this matter. The PhD students are not that good, as they sometimes can not answer our questions.» (Rather good)
- Asking questions to Shila was unnecessary since she never gave a proper answer. On the other hand Hans was more helpful. » (Rather good)
- mud cards!» (Very good)

Fair»1 6%
Adequate»6 40%
Good»7 46%
Excellent»1 6%

- This course is very confusing. Lots of different parts and no clear progression. Bits and pieces from various parts of various subjects. » (Fair)
- How ever since the course contains 2 different subjects it was rather difficult to change the way of thinking.» (Good)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- the home work are very good.»
- Mud cards.»
- The MUD card questions. The home assignments.»
- The joy spread by the dedicated teachers!»
- Mud cards was good.»
- mud card»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- For wireless: Stop using slides. Start doing calculations and derivations on the black board. The pointing on terms on the slides doesn"t help anyone. Make the course schedule, recommended reading and cource sullabus to one condensed document. It"s easier to have all the information in one PM, and schedule and recommended reading in one one table.»
- The usage of slides on the microwave part of the course. Write on the blackboard, please.»
- The tutorials with PhD students could be vastly improved. A tutorial is not simply a question of copying an exercise in the whiteboard. Upload the lecture notes before the actual lectures take place.»
- Lecturers should give extra points for home assignments.»
- Make sure that understanding is much more emphasized in the photonics part. Now it"s all about finding formulas in a thick book. The photonics book not very good either. It deals with a lot of subjects but one only sees formulas and poor explainations/no derivations.»
- Hans should change the way of the tutorial classes are carried out and the tutorial lecturer. Shiela definitly needs to solve more questions.»

16. Additional comments

- I am not satisfied with the standard of this course. »
- Regarding the photonics lab exercises there were six people and it was quite difficult to get the best from it. Though, i understand that the equipment is quite expensive»
- wanted to have recommended exercises in the photonics part »
