- It, unfortunately, didn"t felt like she had read the report carefully and could therefore not give any deeper supervision. She felt very stressed.» (Ulrika Badenfelt (groups RPA1-RPA5))
(Ulrika Badenfelt (groups RPA1-RPA5))
- It would had helped us if he"d read the project PM before starting to supervise. However, we failed at reading it too, even thou we had a laugh about it being one of the risks... Big fail on our part there as well =) » (Christian Sandström (groups RPB1-RPB5))
- I just have to say that he is so good at supervising. I learnt alot from him. He really wants to help people and guide them in the right direction. That is very appreciated.» (Christian Sandström (groups RPB1-RPB5))

About the course

5. The Project Management Basics module

Matrisfråga

- Did not read lecture hand-outs. Good book but did not touch it after basic test. Ulrika had no value add in her presentation, could just look at slides and not listen to her, she just repeated what was on the pp.»
- Jan"s presentation style is impressing. It"s funny and motivates one to listen up. Keep up the good work! (Till Ulrika, Lite mer självsäkerhet så är du också där ,)) »
- Ulrika looked so uncomfortable on stage, an it was hard watching her talk. I just wanted to leave the room. Jan is fun listening to, but sometimes you lose focus, and it is hard to follow when you start talking about irrelevant topics. Examples are good, and contributes to the understanding. But the examples must be on topic. »
- Ulrika was a bit nervous I think. Her teaching style would improve if she relaxed a bit. But in total she was good!»
- Ulrika"s presentation style was lacking a bit of value adding. Instead of adding something new she only presented the text on the slides.»
- I really liked that Jan always used his experience to highlight things during lectures. I think Ulrika has very good structures of her lectures, but could rely more on her own experience.»
- The lecture hand-outs felt a bit "scattered" when not having any connections between each other. The book is good.»
- Ulrika needs to improve her presentation skills, she seems inconfident and reads the slides which makes it a bit boring. Jan is making a lot of jokes, which is nice but there needs to be a balance in order to not get too distracted form the subject.»
- Although the Maylor book was very helpful for the very basics of project management, it seemed very very basic and a bit shallow. If this is one of the most critical and encompassing books of project management (like Jan said), I do not want to see the other ones..»
- From my point of view both your styles were much to slow. It was obvious that Ulrikas was less prepared and less at ease during her parts therefore it lacked added value, while Jan was passioned about the course which made him less to the point. »
- Ulrika seemed a little uncertain on what she said, so I wasn"t convinced. But I think that"s something that will come with experience! »
- I neither attended the basics lectures, nor Ulrikas.»
- The Maylor book was to much operation oriented»

6. The Literature Seminars

Matrisfråga

- Really liked the seminar,A good way to think about what you have read and get perspectives from others. Would like more of it for the other articles. Maybe obl hand-in of summaries for all articles? »
- The time was too short and there were to many participants at the same time. However I learned a lot, the synergy effect was total! I would had liked the discussion to be a bit more free, allowing other views, ideas or questions about the topic in a whole to come forward. »
- Maria is very inspiring and I get the feeling that she loves her job and that she really want to teach us.»
- good learning experience»
- best seminar I have attended so far.»
- The sense of the literatur seminar is not really clear. Read and discuss some papers has no effect on the overall learning result. In master courses every student should know how to understand academical papers. The discussion is helpful if your more interesting in these topics or for writing a thesis, paper otherwise it is not necessary. Then you just to it because its mandatory...»
- Maria is very enthusiastic which makes it easy to talk. Sometimes she seems a bit impatient, and I think she can wait before giving the answer away. This way students get some extra time to actually reflect on the posed questions.»
- I would like to see more literature seminars on different topics as they made me prepare by reading the articles and reflecting. It took quite a while to prepare so something would have to be removed.»
- Good seminar, I am very used to this type of teaching at my university»
- Maria är väldigt duktig på att förklara och att göra ämnet intressant.»
- Very interesting seminar indeed, a good and interesting discussion. Forcing people to speak does not really work though! Maybe it is better to create smaller groups at first, to help the shy ones speak their minds in front of a smaller audience.»
- Maria did a great job.»
- Maria Elmquist was very inspiring and made the topics easy to understand. She was handling the discussion well, letting the students talk. She also had some good, real life examples. A really good literature seminar, continue with those for next year. »
- Maria Elmquist is really good in organizing seminars. There should be more seminars!»
- She was very good in CK theory workshop as well!»
- We were too many people at our seminar which made it very hard to reach deep discussions. »
- Reading her paper was weird and a waste of time, I felt like I could not tell what I thougth since she wrote it.»

7. The Research Project

Matrisfråga

- To many point on The Research Project, 30p is better balanced as it can give more room for the home exam.»
- Regarding our supervisor, we did not get the help we wished for. At the same time she actually treated us like a bunch of idiots!»
- The main problem concerning finding a project was to find a project that had "proper" project management and was applicable on our research project. There was quite a lot of blind luck involved I recon. The presentations/feedback session was really good. However, it may would have been beneficial to let the opponents have like 15 minutes face-to-face time so that tips and hints in their report could had been discussed in more detail (in presentation you only focus on main things...) Our group did however hand our notes over to the opponent group, I hope they found it useful. »
- (Jan) not good at giving constructive comments at the end of the presentations.»
- sometimes the chairman"s comments highlighted aspects i did not take into consideration while hearing the presentations, which was interesting to provide me with a different approach on how to evaluate some projects»
- Extra cred to Christian during the presentations, he helped all the groups very much and contributed to good discussions. »
- we didn"t have enough time to present. full schedule the whole period.»
- Excellent way of learning, but time consuming. Also I believe that the outcome of the project has much to do with the particular project chosen. It is important that the supervisor helps out in finding relevant areas to study, which can be hard. But ours did a good job.»
- Ther need to be a better explication on how to write the report, we had a lot of trouble interpreting what should have gone under what topic.»
- The student assessment was ridiculous, nobody will grade someone fair or lower because that is just unkind. So than you have good or excellent left,... If you were to grade everybody on a scale from 1 to 10 you would see bigger differences!»
- The student assessment was pretty useless to be honest. A private one would be so much better if you absolutely need to have one»
- Our team worked together very well»

8. The Lectures

There are two questions for each topic. Content means "the contents of this lecture were relevant", and Presentation means "the lecturer made a fine effort of presenting the contents"

Matrisfråga

- no answer = did not attend.»
- No answer=was not there»
- I felt that the YCC-lecture missed the point e.i. being critical towards Volvo (or big firm in that matter) about not taking in innovative ideas and especially Volvo totally failing in reaping the positive benefits both external and internal ones. The fact that basically nothing from the YCC was used and that All the project members has quit Volvo speaks for it self. This part she sort of missed. (I know maria did a thesis on just this problem, highlight that?) The C-K theory felt like bullshit bingo, in the sense that you were to disregard whats possible or not. However, after a couple of hours I came to the conclusion that this wasn"t the point of C-K theory, but merely it being a part of creative and thinking outside the box exercise. If this really was the case, I don"t know because Maria weren"t clear about it. Thous, the lecture was a waste (but needed not to be...). »
- Jan, I just want to give you some feeback about your slides. You should make sure that colors, pictures etc. on the slides works fine to print. It is hard to use the slides if you for example use black background. And make sure that the slides are uploaded before the lecture, it is nice to have time to prepare, to get as much as possible out of the lectures.»
- Over all good, but a bit more of a "red thread" would be nice and some lectures were not as relevant as others.»
- hard to remember all of that...»
- Maria"s lectures have been very pedagogic and interesting! She is easy to lissen to! I like all stories on Jan"s lectures!»

- Keep the weekly e-mails! Skip everything except an iCal, and make sure it"s up to date. Make sure everyone gets it is actually THAT ONE that is correct and not for example Time Edit.»
- I appreciate your weekly emails and the effort you put in them! That was a good way of helping us planning the week. »
- i never read them because i rarely use my student email.»
- zip all articles»
- bra med veckomailen eftersom det hjälper mig att "keep track of time" alltså vilken läsvecka det är och vad som snart kommer ske in terms of dead-lines. student syndrome tar lätt över annars!»
- Weekly emails, awesome!»
- Maybe I"m stupid but I didn"t figure out how to get the iCalendar into Goolge Calendar. That would"ve been sweet.. Maybe a short walkthrough on the homepage? And howcome TimeEdit isn"t used? Everybody else uses it so it can"t be that hard »
- The weekly e-mail was great!! Keep them to next year.»
- rooms wasn"t included in the schedule in the portal.»
- The weekly e-mails are really useful and make you look forward to the week ahead of you.»

- Although this course was the most work for me of the courses I"m taking, it did not make me work hard. The workload could have been a bit higher.» (Low)
- The work load compared to the MEI is very low, uneven distribution for the same credits.» (Low)
- early home exam took much focus from the other course: EOI. Project did not feel so rewarding in terms of learning.» (Adequate)
- The resource project took a loot of time, perhaps too much time compared to the amount of points given. That project "prevented" us from reading all the articles in time and prepare for lectures etc.» (Adequate)
- I enjoy this practical course.» (Adequate)
- Great planned with the other course (EoI). If it had not been that well planned you would have got a "Too high"» (High)
- As exchange student i probably have a different point of view concerning how much time i will/should spend. » (High)
- High but not too high. The reading should have been stressed more, I forgot to do it.» (High)
- Especially high before the basic test» (High)
- The other course (EoI)was worse. Together, the workload was way too high. It has been hard to have a life other than the studies.» (High)
- For me the project work became very heavy sice there were a lot of coordination problems and lack in students ability to write reports» (Too high)

- i could not grasp the underlying different between how a PM approaches a project and how instead a line manager does» (Fair)
- 7,5 pts på project management. visste det är en trevlig kurs men det känns lite som att det finns andra ämmnen vi hade kunnat läsa som känns viktigare..» (Fair)
- Good course, very good teachers. to much focus on an unreleveant and not so rewarding project. Dont know if early basic test, or basic test at large is a good way of learning. Would like to have more seminars and bigger home exam.» (Good)
- Could have focused a bit more on noraml project management since most people had no training in this before. Not wise to go all advanced in the first course you take.» (Good)
- Good course, I would recommend it!» (Good)
- It was good but sometimes it was difficult to really grasp the message from the lectures. » (Good)
- Good course! good aspect that is was critical to the theories presented! Made you think more critical when reading the articles.» (Good)
- Thank you Jan for your energetic lectures! :)» (Good)
- Very useful! I learned very much. Not far from best course ever!» (Excellent)

12. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Seminar and Jan.»
- To do the basic test early in the course»
- jans teaching style»
- emails, early test, ICal but updated more oftenly.»
- Basic test. Project. Maria, a gold mine! She made everything so clear! The great information flow. The opposition during the presentation of the research project, and the presentation of course!»
- The basics test. »
- iCal Weekly emails Pentagon Wars Jan"s way of presenting»
- the workshop, lectures about the basics but perhaps a little more in depth»
- C-K workshop and guest lectures»
- the seminars»
- the case and seminar»
- All in all a good course, but as written in question 13 i had a little bit other expectations. The way of presenting especially from Jan was quite good. »
- man kan ändra en del utan att folk börjar gråta = dvs inget som är JÄTTE bra»
- The part about C-K theory and BVM workshop.»
- The weekly e-mails. The presentations was also useful for practising my presentation skills as well as getting feedback on our project. »
- Project work, literature seminars, home exam, Christian as a supervisor, Jan as a lecturer»
- marias lectures»
- Project work, the part about the shadow systems.»
- The general presentations (Jan"s), the litterature seminar, the reasearch project»
- The research project work and the literature seminars. I especially liked the literature seminars, since you got a chance to discuss theory and gain new perspectives from listening to others.»
- It was my first seminar. I enjoyed this scheme of learning. Jan"s style of presenting the content made the lectures interesting.»
- BVM seminar, basic test»
- The emphasis on politics. N.o previous course in Chalmers has dealt with this area Maria Elmquist and the literature seminar.»
- email»
- Jan, his teaching and lecturing skills! That was pretty much the best thing about this course! »
- Seminar»
- the research project and the seminar, I really learn a lot from them.»
- Maria Elmquist, weekly e-mail and all stories at Jans lectures!»
- The possibility to choose whether to attend a literature seminar late in the course or early.»
- Home exam»
- Literature sessions.»
- Basic test, it made that you have a good overall knowledge when starting with the project!»
- The literature seminars, Maria Elmquist, weekly e-mails, the research project»
- Jans good presentation style and the weekly e-mails. I also liked the litterature seminar»
- jan"s enthusiasm!»
- Very good, well structured and exemplified lectures given by Jan. Also project was fun to do.»
- The seminars»
- Literature seminar»
- Jan"s lectures are not heavy on content, but the analogies and metaphors make important take-aways stick.»
- CK theory workshop.»
- I liked the way the course was organised and how the weight between the different assignments. Liked the basic test that made you start reading fast and than move over to more advanced learning (group assignment and home exam) »

13. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Less focus on The Research Project and basic test.»
- The research project. I didn"t learn very much about project managament, it was too much focus on how to write an academic article.»
- YCC, made no sense whatsoever. If I want to hear pr from Volvo I look at an commercial on TV.»
- Ulrika. First, she made no sense during the basic lectures. Second, she was a nightmare having as a supervisor. »
- More lectures should be held by Jan. I want feedback on the RP before the home exam. It"s hard to learn from your mistakes if you don"t know what they are... »
- Give the research project more points relative to the exam, or make it "easier" in order to balance the points and the effort so to speak.»
- the basic test could be moved to a later point during the course, like a week later with respect to the current situation.»
- Present YCC differently, focus more on the project management and project structure than the resulting car»
- maybe the project could be bigger, thus excluding the home examination»
- smaller groups?»
- Less examples out of the it-industry. It`s in a way quite boring and not interesting to focus on this. (sry mechanical engineering is far more intersting to me) More focussing on the innovation process less time on basics of project management. More focussing on theory concerning how to structure process and analyzing problems using models. Helps to structure problems and leads to handle cases systematically.»
- participancy in project work»
- The YCC lecture can be removed if it is something that is in every course.»
- Perhaps the project groups were too big. It would have been better with 4-5 members.»
- Home Exam»
- Exchange one or two lectures that were not so relevant for another literature seminar perhaps?»
- the number of students in the project, 6 are too many. the basic lecturers should be made more interesting. »
- Perhaps more possible projects for those who have problems finding one on their own. Make sure guest lecturers aren"t just there to promote their own project (YCC...) Perhaps more litterature seminars, promoted reading articles and resulted in deeper understanding of them (although perhaps not large hand-ins for all of them, suspect students at this level are ambitious enough to read and be ready for discussion without that).»
- the group work was somehow very general, and broad. but without support or constructive criticism/help and a short deadline it may become demotivating.»
- number of lectures on the same topic was far two high. »
- Lecture notes(slides) were hard to understand when I looked back into them. If a little more explanation could be added in the slides, it would be helpful for students to study for the exam.»
- new articles»
- The influence on your total grade is heavily dependent on others, since the project work matter so much point-wise. I think a better distribution would be 20p basic test, 20p project work, 60p home exam.»
- The concept car thing was really unnecessary. A waste of time. Scrap that one. Maybe put the basic test a week later so people get more time to read»
- nothing»
- no»
- Something which forces students to start reading the course articles early.»
- Not so many guest lectures»
- More literature sessions.»
- Longer time for the project group!»
- There could have been some better preparations in the lectures Ulrika Badenfelt had.»
- Some presentations were very uninspiered. I really don´,t like lectureers were nothing is said apart from whats on the slides. It gets uninteresting and I don´,t learn anything frombeing there. (I might as well stay home reading the slides in half the time)»
- the project was lower level than most undergraduate projects, seems weird to have such a simple "introductory" project in a master"s programme»
- I think there is nothing or at least very little which would need change»
- the project should be more specific, it"s a bit fuzzy.»
- The basic test should be a little bit late.»
- My project group had nearly finished the report and suddenly found out from our advisor that "focus on two issues" as said in the PM could not be two research questions or aims in the report. 50% of our time ended up being spent on changing the structure of the report, goals, research questions, discussions. This was an exercise that I gave me nothing useful for my career. We did not add a single piece of information (or make the presentation of content any better). I understand that there is a point in learning to write an academic paper, but this can be done in a better way. First, I suggest coordinating several courses at the I program, so that we get taught one way to do these papers - I have written maybe 5 papers with extremely similar formats, but still a large portion of work is put into pleasing the advisor. It is not an exercise in producing good content with bright ideas, but getting the right headings. Yes, that is important too, but I do not think that it can be done at too high a cost. Most of our time cannot be spent on things that do not give us any value.»
- First is team assessment in Research Project. I totally disagree to appraise members this way,it"s kind of disrespectful, awkward, and mean. No free rider, we are all master students. But if any, team could report you later. Second, I don"t like to report result of individual test/exam this way, cant you use ladok or something that more privacy like anonymous code? Personal number is rather not anonymous. Or no need to be anonymous for exam result? »
- Can"t come up with anything that definitely should changed, but I think there could be more on leadership. It would also be interesting to start off with a guest speaker that discuss his/her job as a project managager, focusing on what he/she find interesting/difficult. Even though I read about project management in Maylor I still found it hard to get how it looked like in reality. »

14. Additional comments

- Over all a good course»
- It has been delightful attending this course!»
- C-K theory could perhaps be merged with lectures/workshops in "think outside the box", "creative thinking" or something similar. »
- Ulrika could at some times be confused / give confusing / contradicting information to different groups during the supervision. She said something to one group while the opposite to another group.»
- it was a pleasure attending lectures with Jan also given his charisma, and his examples although funny many times were coherent with the topic at hand»
- Good job!»
- good course. Jan is an interesting lecturer.»
- The german pronunciation in the closing lecture could be improved for the next time. Sorry for this joke »
- I think that the BVM workshop was so interesting that it should be something mandatory in the course!»
- Great course! Gave me useful knowledge in PM.»
- I find project management to be a subject that must be understood practically in order to be understood at all. I think that some kind of role play where students are given an assignment or intent which for instance will lead to some kind of conflict illustrating the issue of the shadow system would be a very useful learning tool»
- Hard to change perhaps but right now I feel two parallel take-home exams are quite a lot to handle, especially when somewhat unfamiliar with the concept..»
- The course was leaning more toward the area of project management and not in the area of innovation than I was expecting. »
- This is a nice course for me. It gives me both the general and in depth view of project management. »
- no »
- Course was one of the best from communication point of view: online calender, detailed information available about course objectives and requirements, clear instructions, weekly newsletter, reachability of teachers with our questions. I think these were definietely excellent examples, how teachers should take use of modern communication tools!»
- All together consumed too much time, everything was mandatory - group work, basic test, presentation, seminar, exam - that made study hours in total exceeded 20 hours a week. It should be equal work load with EOI which is important for the entire MEI program. IMO, project management is a soft skill, difficult to teach, rather be "learning by doing". Research Project was not good enough for a PM experiment though. Project management is mixed between science and art but in real life, it rather about art, it"s subjective. Somewhat no point to push this hard.»
- Thank you for an interesting course!»
