7. How understandable are the course goals?

Course goals:

After the course the students must be able to:

Plan experiments according to a proper experimental design. Choose the appropriate experimental design for different circumstances.

Analyse and evaluate experimental results properly according to different methods (ANOVA, regression ...)

Describe and apply fundamentals (in statistics and exp design) such as hypothesis testing, degrees of freedom, factorial design, and regression and so on according to course material.

Master students (KBT120):

Understand and apply fundamentals in multivariate data analysis (PCA and PLS).

- Tentan kändes väldigt viktad (höhöhö) mot Anova tabellen. Kändes inte som att tentan alls testade hela kursen. Det var 4 uppgifter som i grund gick ut på att göra 4 olika sorters anova tabeller för att sedan utvärdera resultatet. Sen att merparten jag snackat med inte alls förstod fråga 3 eller 6 gör det ju inte bättre.» (No, not at all)
- Tentan testade oss inte alls på många av de saker vi gått genom på kursen. Saker som saknades var nested design, steepest ascent, mixture/simplex design, mean value confidence interval, variance confidence interval. De flesta av uppgifterna var bara varianter av ANOVA. Det borde definitivt varit mycket mer variation i uppgifterna, som i tidigare tentor. Uppgiftsformuleringen är knasig i många fall, speciellt problem 3 på den här tentan. Det var inte många som förstod det.» (No, not at all)
- I think that task one and two were very similar. And the other calcualtion tasks were as well quite similar. We have learnt much more in the course such as nested design and optimization, I was not able to test my knowledge on that, i would have prefered one more calculation task insted of a theory qusetion.» (No, not at all)
- There were no testing of knowledge of how to plan experiments in the exam, which I thought was supposed to be important, apparently it is more important to be able to construct lots of ANOVA tables.» (Quite OK)

- Multivariate analysis using SIMCA is very interesting topics. It can be a course of itself. I also find the various factorial design is very complicated and very important for our future needs especially the Robust analysis. - I think many subjects have been mentioned during the course, which was not good. due to the time limitations and the volume of the project and assignments we couldnät go deep into the subject. therefore, teachers just touched upon each of the subjects and the important task was for us to study them and learn them by heart. - Specially Jan had a lot of problems in conveying his ideas to the students. Althought he is very knowledgeable about the material, but when he couldn"t convey them what"s the use of it???!!! this is the reason that I say Jan"s lectures are very poor, and most of the time you don"t understand anything, you just have to write whatever he writes on the board...!» (Very low)
- Both Claes and Calle speaks very good English, but Jan Rodmar"s English is really difficult to understand, even for me as a Swedish student. It must be even harder for the foreign students to understand the steps in the calculation classes. This problem lowers the overall rating of the course: if a course is given to foreign master students, it should have a higher quality in the English language. One hesitates to ask questions during lessons, when you don"t understand the answer. » (Low)
- Rodmar funkar bra när man ställer frågor till han öga mot öga. Men i en föreläsningsal har han inte riktigt kraften att nå ut.» (Low)

- Gick aldrig på någon eftersom vi haft rodmar på en dator-föreläsning i åk 1 vilket avskräckt mig. Vet att jag ändå inte kommer att höra ett smack!» (?)

- Overhead-bilder på datorlösningar är ingen bra metod att lära ut hur man gör beräkningarna. Tentagenomgången var inte heller bra, var endast en genombläddring av inscannade handskrivna lösningar på projektorn. - Jan is really bad, you can"t understand him and the assignments he takes up during the tutorial are bad. To ignore an opinion every student has and keep on having him is horrible» (Poor)

21. What do you think about the optimization project?

- OK, but hated the report. To many tables...»
- Either too many groups or too few teachers there to help. If you got stuck in the project you more or less had to visit jan or niclas after the lesson to get help.»
- The project give us (students) hands-on on experimental design, which is a great experience. Furthermore, the simulation programme give me a clearer picture on how to develop and design an experiment towards optimized condition.»
- Difficult at first, but a very good way of learning. The pairing in groups was not fair for everyone, because some swedish students had to do all the work.»
- It was very good but I hade to do al the work myself since my group members did not understand anything. I don"t think that it was fair when some groups hade many foreign students and some hade none.»

- Väldigt bra, lyfte verkligen kursen en massor och man lärde sig riktigt mycket. Tyckte det var roligt och lärorikt. Så här bra projekt borde man ha i alla kurser. Handledarna var en stor del i att det blev så bra. Ett sådant här projekt kräver bra handledare, annars kommer nog folk inte vara så pigga på att arbeta extra med det.»
- Projektuppgiften var rolig samtidigt som den gav en praktisk tillämpning av hur man kan använda metoderna i kursen. Något som jag ser mycket negativt på är gruppindelningen i projektet. Jag och flera andra svenska studenter blev placerade att arbeta med utbytestudenter med dåliga kunskaper. Detta gjorde att man fick göra stora delar av projektet på egen hand. Under de schemalagda projektövningarna var det dessutom mycket svårt att få hjälp (för få lärare eller för mycket elever som behöver hjälp). När man dessutom får reda på att utbytesstudenterna är placerade med svenska studenter för att de ska klara projekten lättare bli man förbannad. Det har alltså varit problem tidigare år, att utbytesstudenter inte klarar projektet p.g.a dåliga kunskaper. Är det då rätt att låta dessa studenter glida på andra samtidigt som man ökar belastningen avsevärt för de svenska studenhterna. Detta borde ha lösts genom att sätta in extra lärarstöd, inte genom att lasta över problemet på de svenska studenterna. Resultatet av detta blir att utbytesstudenter med dåliga kunskaper blir godkända på projektet utan att ha lärt sig så mycket samtidigt som de svenska studenterna måste lägga allderles för mycket tid på projektet och får svårt att hinna med att studera övrigt kursmaterial.»
- I would have preferred to not have "problem based learning" thing. It was extremely difficult to know what to do since it was difficult to get a hold of the teacher since he had to go around to help all the time. Why on earth was there not a more detailed description of what should be done? That was a terrible mistake. When you sit around waiting for help for three hours you don"t get much done. Also, I couldn"t help to notice that many swedish students were paired up with foreign student with rather poor knowledge of the subject. I had two in my group and one was very good and knew what to do but the other had very little knowledge and didn"t contribute anything. Can anyone get into chalmers?»

- I learned from the tutorial handout. I couldn"t do the project before I practiced the tutorial. So this project is good strategy to push us practicing» (Adequate)
- actually we have given too much time in optimization project but, very short period of time for MVDA.even though it contains some exam credits.so my opinion is that try to give more time to MVDA projects(equal distribution)» (Adequate)

- The optimization project was a nightmare when it comes to being able to ask questions.» (Very poor)
- Don"t get me wrong the teachers was very helpful and kind but on the optimization project you could sit and wait for help 2 hours easily, it was pretty much the same on the MVDA-project. More teachers are needed in both these projects!!!» (Very poor)
- Under projekttiden var det nästan omöjligt att få hjälp. Det är tur att Jan Rodmar ofta är tillgänglig på sitt kontor:)» (Rather poor)
- The only time to ask questions was in the break or just after a lecture/practice and often there were a long que of people who wanted help. So I think there should be some time set for "getting help", it could be a "question time" or a practice where the students could sit down and calculate and ask for help if they wanted. I think this would be appreciated, at least in the later "study weeks", perhaps lv5,6 and 7?» (Rather poor)
- During beginning of optimization project, tutors were too few and one had to wait very long time for assistance.» (Rather poor)

- The later chapters of the book were very poorly covered, nevertheless you are expected to know just as much about them.» (more)

- I would have appreciated if there were some consultation times. When I got stuck on some of the exercises it took time before I could get any help. It"s maybe not necessary to have them at the beginning at the course, but perhaps when it"s closing in to the exam. »
- I think there should be some time set for "getting help", it could be a "question time" or a practice where the students could sit down and calculate and ask for help if they wanted. I think this would be appreciated, at least in the later "study weeks", perhaps lv5,6 and 7?»

- Either it would be good to get more old exams with solutions earlier or to work through the solutions to the problems. They were really not acceptable. At least rewrite them because now they are really messed up. Jan Rodmar really wants to help people and get people to understand but its very hard to hear and understand what he is saying. »

- The exchange students can"t write reports, I had a problem with "plagiat" in my group. Also almost no knowledge of MATLAB. In our group we had some communication problems because they were quite bad at english. The swedish group member had to do almost every thing with the reports and that effects the problem solving and reading and thereby maybe the exam results. » (Adequate)
