22. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Matlab exercises!»
- guest teachers and the "connection" to industry and commercialisation»
- The matlab exercise and the proposal, both projects were interesting and relevant.»
- I like that the final exam constitutes only 50% of the grade as I believe written exam"s are quite random. MATLAB exercises were interesting and the Grant Proposal was a new way of conducting a litterature study. Change is always nice.»
- Matlab excercise and Grant proposal»
- The grant proposal. It was someting new and you learned alot»
- matlab exercise»
- The matlab exercise but it should be some changes to it so it is easier to understand what the purpose is of the exercise. The grant proposal»
- project proposal»
- The matlab tutorial Lectures about cell based production»
- The assignments shall both be preserved, since both of them increased the learning. »
- The compartmentalization of the course into grant project and simulation project»
- The matlab exercise. It was not intressting at all but we learned a lot.»
- - The simulation project and the grant proposal project - The contribution of the projects to the final grade »
- literature assignments»
- The guest lectures from Axellia and Novozymes, they were really good. The matlab exercise and grant propsal should also be kept and one should choose the groups without the teachers interfering, just like this year.»
- The projects! The projects were interesting and I learned a lot from both of them.»
- keep that both matlabgroups have 2 sessions a week. Keep the guestlectures! Good that the projects are included in the grades since they take a lot of time. Nice with the mingle sesion after the course.»
- Biofuels,Stoichiometry, Mammalian cell culture Literature assignment with oral presentation was a very good experience»
- Grant proposal was an interesting and enjoying task!»

23. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- RQ some less slides from research papers and some more slides with general info about how it works.»
- the matlab exercise should maybe be a little bit less difficult.»
- I know that it is hard to achieve as this is an obligatory course. But it really isn"t fair to most exchange students to start the course without having ever seen MATLAB before. MATLAB knowledge really should be a prerequisite. »
- Four peouple helping the matlab excercise. One is not enoguh. Less lectures and more time to mathlab»
- the lectures should include more of what the course is really about Design and control. »
- more aids for grant proposal»
- The matlab exercise»
- include more mat lab tutors in lab and more classes in mat lab must be conducted.»
- The problems with having many guest lecturers can be that much of the information is repeated over and over again. It is not necessary to get an explanation of differences between a batch and a fed-batch every lecture. Perhaps it can be possible to give the guest lecturers some more info about the knowledge the students already have when contacting them.»
- Lisbeth should give out an example of how a grant prop. should be like. It was hard to know how to begin the writting without any example of how it should be. The work load was too high in the course. You should either cancel the matlab or the grant prop. or do the exercises less extensive. There should be an extra assistant in the studio lectures. One teacher is not enough when the majority of the students need help.»
- - More help during the matlab exercise, have to wait for a long time to get help »
- nothing much.may be easier matlab ex.»
- Kalle"s first parts about mass balances were to much of a repeat from previous courses and should be much shorter. The mammalian cells lecture where irrelevant, should be more about the bioreactors used, not so much basic info about mammalian cells.»
- The lectures should have more genral information and less examples to make it easier to know what is general information and what is only true for that specific example. Better connection between lectures.»
- More matlab teachers, Calle was really good but it was too many students on one teacher! It should be stated clearer what the different grades in the matlabproject accouts for. The matlab project was too extensive! oral presentations in week 6 or 7. Calle should have his lectures the first weeks since they are necessary for the matlabproject. »
- A second teacher during the computer exercises. It was difficult to manage to help all students for the teacher during the lectures. Do not have both the oral presentations for grant proposal and deadline for the MATLAB report during the same week, when it also was deadlines in the other courses.»

24. Additional comments

- It was hard to connect the different lectures with the course. Some more "textbook information" would be nice.»
- A good obligatory course, feels relevant to all tracks of the biotechnology programme. Something which can be questioned for the biopolymers course.»
- The course is good but if you have done your batchelor at chalmers it feels like you have already taken it, this should not be a mandatory course for the master! It is not necessary to have 4 lectures in the begining about the different culture modes, mass balances etc. Bioreactor engineering is a prerequisite and it is therefore not necessary to sum up this course in the beginning. One lecture should be enough, if the students don"t remeber something from the BRT (or similar) it is up to them to learn it on their own. The guest lectures were for the most part interesting but some parts did not fit in the course and it was difficult to study for the exam having only the hand-outs to look at. Having only the hand-outs is also difficult if you miss any lectures, which is inevetable if you take other courses with a lot of lab-time and project hours. The exam mirrored what the course should have been about more than it actually was. Some questions was very detailed and could not bve answered just from the information on the hand-outs»
- exam pattern was hard to understand because too many questions were asked under one sub division.»
- I think that both the MATLAB excercise and the grant proposal was good assignments. MATLAB helped in the understanding of the control of a bioreactor and grant proposal felt like we were actually doing something that was linked to our future working life. The problem was that this somehow put away some focus from the learnings at the lecture, and at the exam it felt like there were much details that I had not learnt the way I would have needed to. Besides, it must be able to avoid using the same lectures in different courses. Everyone taking Protein Engineering in Study Period 3 had exactly the same lecture on P.pastoris then, and the parts concerning membrane proteins and aquaporins were not at all relevant in this course.»
- no any exame just project report»
- Very good teachers (Calle and Lisbeth) that care and want to teach, keep that attitude! Personally I don"t care much for these guest lectures that seem to get more and more common on matsers level. They can be inspiring in some cases, but I learn almost nothing. There is no depth and a lot of repetition. Use the time to teach us something new and useful instead! I really think you should look over the lectures and ask yourself what this course should be about, planned and concrete lectures can provide a red thread that the guest lecture concept lacks completely. As an example a lecture on control strategies could be very relevant, since almost no one has taken such a course. One lecture could be devoted to the PID-regulator since this is used in the computer exercises. Also some more information on grant proposals apart from the discussion lecture could be good, were examples of proposals could be presented. I think this course has high potential, especially with its current administrators, but to be honest this is how it was for me: - Fun computer exercise, but almost a complete repetition and needed to teach myself of PID through wikipedia. - Grant proposal, just another project report. - Lectures, a complete repetition of the bachelor BRT-course and irrelevant lectures from various companies. - Exam, random questions with no overview. Also, when the deadlines are defined from course start, it is unpopular to change these two days before deadline even though the thought was to be nice. I hope my complaints are constructive, and I finally want to stress that it"s the contents that I am sceptical to, not the administrators, who have been expeptionally good! Cheers!»
- - The most interesting course of the three compulsory courses in the masterprogram - Very instructive to do the grant proposal»
- good overall.»
- The guest lectures often repeated each other so maybe these should be looked over before the lecture so that the repeated stuff could be taken away or more limited.»
- Guest lecturers tend to talk a bit too much about their company/work which can be interesting but is not relevant for the course. Also, it would be good to have more information in the beginning of what the course will be about and what will be included in the lectures.»

Thanks!

Thank you very much for giving us your feedback on the course! Have a good summer!
