Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

37 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»5 13%
The goals are difficult to understand»4 10%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»15 40%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»13 35%

Genomsnitt: 2.97

- there is a need for goals of the project also, what should be done and so on. This was really not clear.» (The goals are difficult to understand)
- The goal is too broad and not clearly defined. » (The goals are difficult to understand)
- all the projects were so different, it was difficult to know what was expected from each group» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- Goals are very generalised and due to the projects are difficult to fulfil all of the course guidelines as the company guidelines contradict some of them.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

34 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»0 0%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»32 94%
No, the goals are set too high»2 5%

Genomsnitt: 2.05

- you should state the goals in this question» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- The materials knowledge of the whole group should have been of a higher standard to take this type of project on.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

33 svarande

No, not at all»2 6%
To some extent»20 60%
Yes, definitely»7 21%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»4 12%

Genomsnitt: 2.39

- The examination part of short exams makes to much difference on the final grading.» (No, not at all)
- The so called "duggor" are way too big part of the grade. Often its the ones that wotk hardest with the projects that doesnt have time to study for the dugga, and thereby they get a worse grade than the lazy ones within the group.» (No, not at all)
- The information about the importance of the "short tests" was limited. We got the information about the grading system the same date we had the first test. I should have put more effort into my studying regarding this issue if I knew you could get a higher grade if you reached 31 points on the tests. And I also think the proportions is very strange. It is good with individual grading but the workload between the two tests and the project are not in proportion to the grading. We spent very many hours on the project but you didn"t have to spend that much time to have good result on the tests, if you knew it could give you higher grade on the course.» (To some extent)
- Quite poor feedback on the final results. » (To some extent)
- The two dugga that we had was not a good way to represent what we have learned.» (To some extent)
- It does not assess the individual input of each member, which is a big weakness to the course final marks, and this allows some people to do less work than other to fulfil the goals.» (To some extent)

Teaching and course administration

6. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?

37 svarande

Small extent»13 35%
Some extent»11 29%
Large extent»11 29%
Great extent»2 5%

Genomsnitt: 2.05

- to no extent. Almost only repetition» (Small extent)
- The topics of the lectures were not very well chosen, many of the topics that were brought up were things that we learned a long time ago. Repetition is always good, but unnecessary much effort was spend going through these things once again. Some things were new, like the axiomatic design part, but it was presented in a way that was very hard to follow.» (Small extent)
- Actually this course and Design Methodology (last period) help me to understand how to use the tools.» (Large extent)

7. To what extent has the the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?

37 svarande

Small extent»15 40%

- there was no» (?)
- Information was very often handed out late and close to the events. Not very well planned.» (Very badly)
- Everything came late and was not fully think through .» (Rather badly)
- Blurry information.» (Rather badly)
- The course homepage was not used to pass out information at all I would say.» (Rather badly)
- Väldigt dåligt uppdaterat kurs pm.» (Rather badly)
- I was NOT impressed by the course administration, this was one of the best courses I have taken, but the course administration made everything hard instead of being helpful. The duggas was handled in a very unprofessional way, the students were not informed about the importance of the duggas until the same day as the first dugga. I found the importance of the dugga results for the final grade unproportionate (I got +1 and still believe so) since you could choose to put a lot of time into the studies for the dugga and hence abandon your group mates in the project work and still get the same grade as everybody else. » (Rather badly)
- Please send out information earlier than the day before presentations, deadlines etc.» (Rather well)
- I find it very strange that you have a course PM that you update during the course without giving them different versions. As it was now you had to download the course PM every time you wanted to have a look at it because you didn"t now if any changes had been made. A minor fault but quite annoying. Also some sort of template database for different kind of tools (QFD, Kesselring etc) would be good.» (Rather well)

Summarizing questions

13. What is your general impression of the course?

37 svarande

Poor»0 0%
Fair»1 2%
Adequate»5 13%
Good»25 67%
Excellent»6 16%

Genomsnitt: 3.97

- There must be a better check between what the project is about and what the course is about. They need to fit!» (Adequate)
- Have more of pure product development projects» (Adequate)
- the shorts tests didnt give much, still nice to get an oportunity to get a better grade» (Good)
- It is very good to get some experiences from the companies reality and not just from the academic world.» (Good)
- The idea of working closely to different companies is very fun and interesting idea, jet the planning of the course must be improved.» (Good)
- Take away duggorna and it will be much better.» (Good)
- Because I like the way that I need to develop something and have chances to practice on the tools and methods that I had learnt.» (Excellent)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

-
- The lectures»
- Budget, Good interesting projects»
- the whole project,, you learn a lot in this. A lot!»
- Development of products»
- The contact to the companies and real cases, that have been valuable for me.»
- This whole project.»
- The close collaboration with the company.»
- The course idea as such, with many fun projects to take on.»
- The lectures.»
- "dugga" exam»
- The exhibition in the student union building was appreciated»
- The good projects»
- The cooperation with companies»
- All the good possibilities to choose between good alternatives of projects. The quite loose timetable, it´,s great with just a few gates.»
- I would say that most of the course should definitly be presvered. Some things might however be improved, see q 15.»
- The format is good and the companies were very interesting to work with.»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

-
- The reflective report. It was a time waster, didn´,t feel rewarding at all»
- The planning and advertisement of the exhibition was really poor. Did not feel fun, good or rewarding to stand there for 9 hours when only approximately 30 persons outside the projects visited it.»
- gathering of projects needs to be done better, and as mentioned goals for the project, then company cant have goals that are not fitting into the things chalmers wants out of the project. Therefore create individual goals for each project or for all projects alltogether.»
- The exhibition. We sat there and the gruops talked and/or stared at each other. For next year high school classes could be invited to market Chalmers and product development.»
- Earlier information about the importance of the tests regarding the grades.»
- Chalmers goal and the project company goal should be in the same direction and stable. Sometime I found that there is some conflicts between them.»
- The final presentation and exhibition should be pushed for more. Also, the individual assessment should be changed. As it is now, the assessment is designed as if the tasks is not meant to be divided among team members.»
- The information distribution and planning of the course. Also the evaluation of the other group members must be improved. The projects require that the work is divided between the group members. Therefore more options or a chance to motivate your answers should be provided in the evaluation!»
- The workshop was to early, we had to make some steps more quickly than we wanted. The Duggas took a lot of focus from the more important Product Development project. The audience was way too small in Runan where we presented our projects.»
- Duggorna should be removed»
- Add lectures about the PD process.»
- clearer requirements and expectations »
- Advertise for the exhibition in the student union building. There were alomost no one there except for people attending the course.»
- Promote the Exhibition MUCH BETTER. The students have put so much time and effort on the exhibitions and there were very few people who came to see what we had done.»
- The large impact from duggorna»
- The information about content in the report. Supervisors could say that mandatory things weren´,t appropriate. The market-course acts like we already had begun with the project even before christmas. Result of this is what you do in that course is quite useless for the rest of the project.»
- The dugga, remove it, have them as seminars with discussions instead.»
- Accessibility to prototype lab should be better. Information about printers and such should be better. We got the info from Anita (halfway into the project) that we where supposed to use PPU"s printers for example.»
- More company input would be beneficial»
- The lectures and the dugga.»

16. Additional comments

-
- A lecture which covered the economical aspects of product development and how to make estimates on concepts etc would have been good to implement in the course. We were supposed to make financial estimates but we were not taught how to do it nor given any examples of it.»
-
- As an international student it was interesting to work in that atmosphere but it is different from what I am used to. »

The project

17. What is your overall opinion about the project course and that it is based on an assignment from an industrial company?

- good»
- Overall opinion is that it is a very good course, because it gives somewhat real experience of product development»
- Good»
- excellent»
- great»
- To many projects that not belong in this course»
- Good with a real project. Should though be ore of product development.»
- its an excelent thing. But the assignment should be products entirely»
- Very good, like I mentioned in question 13 and 14.»
- Good to have a chance to touch the real development work. However, Chalmers goal and the project company goal should be in the same direction and stable. It is hard for student to satisfy both if they are lined in different way. »
- Very good to get in contact with an industrial company.»
- Very good and it provides a better understanding of the whole PD-master.»
- It is good that it is based on an assignment from an industrial company. Gives a more real world feeling to it. »
- Very good.»
- Very interesting, good experience.»
- Good.»
- I think it is a very good way of learning how product development project work. It feels "real".»
- Very Good that a Company is involved»
- Great!»
- Bra upplägg. Man får en inblick i verkligheten.»
- The projects chosen to run in this course should be more adapted to the two different tracks, business and development. As it is now, some companies can ask for a business plan, or market analysis, and do not want a product developed, but to fulfill the coarse goals you still need to develop a product. So either you choose products that go hand in hand with the goals of this course, or you make the goals flexible depending on the project at hand.»
- it"s good»
- The company requirements definitely provide a different outlook on the project as the group found to the sticking rigidly to the needs of the company. If is was a student project then well could tailor or findings to best suit ourselves.»
- Great to work with "real" companies.»
- Its good and very intresting to have such courses»
- It wasn"t easy to complete. I didn"t have enough competence.»

18. What do you think about the course introduction including the project presentation and project selection process?

- ok»
- It was overall good.»
- Good»
- Very bad, The people fining projects needs to consider the projects better.»
- pretty good»
- Nothing to complain against, except that they did not hold their time limits»
- Good.»
- at the begining we repeated a lot of stuff we already knew»
- I think it worked well.»
- Good. Some projects were not interesting at the presentation time.»
- The projects could be presented in the first period to save time for the second study period.»
- It is good that the companies come by to present their projects.»
- Were OK.»
- Very good. It was great to have presentations of the projects, it raised the intereset and made it easier to choose.»
- Very good.»
- Ok.»
- It did the job»
- Good»
- You get to know what you need to know.»
- Fungerade bra, dock svårt att tillämpa vårt projekt på PPMA-kursen.»
- Very good, but way to long.»
- good»
- It was good and interesting as it was a different way of doing things.»
- Worked very well.»
- it was good and reduced burden on students»
- It was well-done but relied on my competence (which I sometimes lacked).»

19. Did the project presentation and project memo provide relevant and useful information for starting the project?

- ok, different fore every company»
- The project presentations were usefull. The course memo wasn´,t satisfying at all, felt like it was put together the day before the course start»
- Yes»
- No, no goals for the project = nowhere to aim.»
- it was a bit confusing»
- Yes»
- Yes.»
- yes»
- Yes, good that the representatives from the companies where there presenting what they wanted us to do.»
- Yes»
- Yes.»
- Yes.»
- Yes»
- Yes.»
- Not really, several interviews with the company were needed before we understood what was supposed to be done.»
- Some pieces missing in the memo.»
- Yes»
- To some extent. Some important information has been given later.»
- Yes»
- Yes»
- yes»
- Yes»
- Absolutely.»
- yes it provided to choose to project»
- yes»

20. How did you experience the formation of the project team?

- ok»
- Didn´,t really get the process behind the formation»
- Good»
- Good, random is a good way of doing it, everybody seem to learn cultural differences great, But that also needs to be considered in the grading since some group had no exachange student and therefore had a very convenient and comfortable project.»
- chaotic... »
- Ok»
- Good.»
- It is a fair method»
- My group was excellent from the start to the end.»
- It follow the team development stage theory! I think our team reaches the last stage at the end of the project!»
- I am very pleased with the formation.»
- It is very good that the project groups are put together after the wishes of every student.»
- Was not so good that only 4 out of 7 were in the group before Christmas. 3 new ones after was added including me.»
- I got what I wanted, so good.»
- Easy team to start working with immediately,»
- Good.»
- I believe the process was functional»
- OK»
- Very good.»
- Svårt när vissa gruppmedlemar läser två kurser upptill projektkursen.»
- Good»
- I think it was made in a very good way»
- The formation of the project team came in the later stages of the course so in the initial steps productivity was hindered.»
- Worked fine.»
- it was intersting and multilingual»
- Not so good. It was very difficult cause no one knew what to do, and I can"t say that this was solved completely towards the end of the project.»

21. Has the team-building exercise with the psychologist been useful?

- no»
- No, it was a waste of money. The things he said we have already heard before in courses like IPO. Next time, my advice would be that the psychologist gives an introduction to the political system of projects.... and also the shadow system of project... that feels more relevant and usefull »
- Not really»
- No, give us a theory lecture of forming storming.... instead, he gave us almost no tips and ways of behaving.»
- no»
- No»
- Not so much»
- Yes to some extent.»
- Maybe it should be more useful if its done at a later moment in the project, once problems have already appeard »
- Yes, to some extent. It gave you a hint of what the different group members wanted with the project. But maybe not necessary to be there each group individually.»
- Yes, in some extent!»
- Interesting, but not really useful.»
- Not very much but it was still interesting.»
- yes»
- No.»
- No, not useful at all.»
- It was interesting, but not very useful afterwards.»
- it just confirmed Swedish dislike to leadership and conflict»
- Too some extent. Don´,t now if it helpted the group function better»
- No. The money spent on that could have been spent on something MORE useful. The psychologist is just giving us the theori and not any practical comments on how we could proceed.»
- Yes but maybe a bit too early.»
- Nej inte särskilt.»
- Not really, but I guess that depends, some groups might have had a bigger use of him.»
- yes»
- Having done something like this before it was repetitive however it worked well for others.»
- Not very, but it was interesting.»
- not realy..»
- No, not so much. I would prefer if we talked about our personal group experience and hear individual recommendations on how to improve our team work. What we got was merely a lecture.»

22. What do you think about the contents of your project in terms of complexity, difficulty and suitability for this course?

- ok»
- It was very good to experience how to handle the many aspects of product development. So complexity and difficulty was on a good level. »
- Good and with high complexity/difficulty.»
- Not fitted to this course, that was pretty clear.»
- great»
- The project was very suitable for this course. BUT, in the beginning it was difficult to understand what should be delivered in May. Here the supervisor at Chalmers should have been more active, helping us getting the right information needed from the company. »
- Not so big project but very technical»
- High complexity and to get a grip of what we were supposed to do.»
- I would like it to be a more comercial project»
- Our project was very wide and open, but the company representatives supported us very good and helped us to limit the project.»
- They have high complexity. They are very difficult comparing to the others but they are interesting!»
- It felt very suitable, but taking the complexity of the industry it was difficult to come up with a proven solution in the short time given.»
- Higher level of complexity and therefore a little difficult. But that is also a challenge and the project is very well suited for the course.»
- Was more of a material project but otherwise good.»
- Very good.»
- I think the project I attended was rather complex for a development team this inexperienced»
- OK»
- It was said to be less complex than it was, all was stretched out and in the end involved a lot of other issues.»
- Överlag bra, kanske lite väl inriktat på tung FEA.»
- Our projects did not fit into this course, it was a business development project.»
- i think that my project suited the course very well.»
- Materials research was a lot more complex than that of what I was used to but this just meant a steeper learning curve and a deeper understanding of materials.»
- It was perfect.»
- it was approprite projects for 3 to 4 months.»
- I think it was suitable, but rather difficult.»

23. How has the interaction with your company and your industrial contact person worked out?

- good»
- The contact was very good. we managed to get to know each other and live up to eachothers expectations.»
- Very Good»
- pretty good, good people on the company, takes time even though their schedule is stuffed.»
- great»
- Very well!»
- very good»
- Very good.»
- At the begining we were both enthisiastic but then they lost interest»
- Very good. And they were enthusiastic they really think our job was valuable for them which gave us inspiration. See also above, question 22.»
- It went very well.»
- Very well. The company and supervisor has provided all information as quick as possible.»
- Very, very good. We have had weekly contact and if we asked any questions we received an answer within an hour.»
- Very well»
- Very good.»
- It was difficult to get information sometimes and it took a lot of time to acquire even the simplest information.»
- Very good.»
- very good! Nothing to complain about»
- Good»
- Great.»
- Helt okej, dom kunde gjort mer, vi kunde gjort mer.»
- Very good.»
- we"ve had a very good cooperation.»
- Limited the company communicated well with emails however it would have been better with more face to face contact.»
- Great, could not have been better.»
- very good interaction and well supported»
- quite well»

24. To what extent have you reached the project goals you aimed at?

-
- To full extent»
- Spot on»
- we had no! since chalmers didnt give us no.»
- reached them and beyond»
- Fully»
- Great extent.»
- good extent»
- To a large extent. It exceeded our expectations and aims.»
- More than we expected!»
- Almost to a full extent.»
- In the beginning it was very hard to estimate where we would end up in the end. But the company was very satisfied with the results so we think we reached our goals.»
- Maybe 80%»
- Good.»
- Fully. Prototype showing the final concept.»
- Unsure»
- Large Extent»
- To its fully extent.»
- At a very high»
- 90 %»
- We achieved most of the short terms testing and needs the company asked of however the long term tests were not physically possible within the time frame.»
- All goals were fulfilled.»
- to great extent in understanding work culture and handling pressure also the procdure in which way the projects work»
- to some extent, not entirely»

25. Has your company got what they wanted?

- hope so»
- Most definitly»
- Yes»
- No. beacuse they aimed at a different goal than chalmers apparently did. Mismatch.»
- aboslutly»
- Yes»
- Yes they are really saticfied»
- Yes.»
- I hope so, no way to know»
- Yes they were very enthusiastic.»
- Definitely yes.»
- They seem very pleased.»
- Yes, see above.»
- Yes, they seemed to be very pleased with the result.»
- We haven"t had a final meeting with them.»
- Yes.»
- They were satisfied with the results»
- Yes»
- Yes they are very satisfied.»
- Yes, they were very happy.»
- yes»
- They were very appreciative of the work presented and we managed to answer a lot of their questions from the brief.»
- They said that they got more than they expected.»
- yes to great extent»
- the were quite satisfied»

26. Any other comments about the project, its contents and the work process?

- The supervisor at Chalmers did a poor job.»
- Very fun and interesting project.»
- Please invite some people to the exhibition/presentation. We prepared for weeks making exhibition material, presentation etc, but almost no one saw it.»
- The team building should have been done in a better way. A lot of the groups have had conflicts which is Normal, but it affects the later interaction of the individuals after the project is finished. But it has been a very good experience on who you can trust and who you cannot.»
- As stated above, make the demands more flexible depending on the projects itself.»
- good with the level of freedom that we had in our projects. It made it possible to choose a suitable process of our own which in itself was a very good experience.»
- Everything else was fine»

Lectures, short tests "duggor", and reflection paper

27. What do you think about the usefulness of having this kind of exercises linked to the project work?

- not so good»
- Both the duggor and the reflection paper was a waste of time in my opinion. »
- Ok but not great. The required design of the method report did not fit with project.»
- not sufficient at all.»
- no use»
- Good way to learning the theory»
- Ok.»
- Not very useful.»
- I dont think that the book is neccessary for the test since we rarely use anything from that. For me, most knowledge that I used in this project comes from this lectures and Design Methodology course.»
- It is not at all reasonable that the short test should have that influence on the final grading.»
- Not very useful learning method but it gives an easy way to set an individual grade on each student.»
- it was good but we should have known the impact of the duggor more in advance.»
- should be a separate course»
- Good, as long as they dont give the oppurtunity for the lazy ones within groups to gete better grades than the hard working ones.»
- Good.»
- Not useful, didn"t learn much.»
- It is good for the grading process I guess. makes it possible to sort out which individuals that have done their "homework"»
- Not Useful»
- It was good for the understanding, but we had no great use of the methods this time.»
- Teoribiten passade inte in i kursen.»
- Not that usefull»
- it"s good»
- For a design project it would have been relevant however the materials research project did not use many of the taught information. »
- The lectures could have brought up more new topics instead of repeating old topics. The duggas were too important for the final grade, but it was good to have them. The reflection paper felt like a waste of time.»
- good and forces to learn the theory but it helped in future »
- very useful»

28. Do you think that it is reasonable that a MSc in Product Development should be familiar with different theoretical approaches within the field?

- yes»
- Definitly»
- yes»
- Yes.»
- yes, but that should come from other courses»
- Yes»
- Yes.»
- of course»
- Yes»
- Yes.»
- Absolutely.»
- Ofcourse.»
- Yes»
- Yes.»
- Yes, very reasonable.»
- Yes.»
- yes, very resonable»
- Yes»
- Yes»
- Ja»
- Yes»
- absolutely»
- Yes this would allow better adaptability for that person in different industries.»
- Yes.»
- yes it is good to know the thoery»
- yes»

29. Have the lectures and the reflective paper assignment helped you to gain this familiarity?

- to som extent, did have it before»
- Lectures have been the most helpful.... the reflective report was made only because it was mandatory»
- To some extent»
- No»
- no, I did know most of it from previous courses»
- Yes»
- No. Familier with the terms from before. Function means modelling were new though.»
