- The spectroscopyopart of the examination was good. However, the EM-part was very strange. The questions seemed to be more about remember physical formulas by heart than to know any physics at all. I find this very weird since I think this kind of education should be about understanding how to USE the formulas, not learning to draw signs in the right order. And if that"s how you choose to have the exam, please inform the students that they should cut back a bit on the physical understanding in their studying prior to the exam and concentrate harder on learning all kinds of formulas by heart since that has never been the way to go earlier in the education.» (To some extent)

- I did not feel comfortable asking Matthew questions since he often turned very defensive when students asked him things. Especially before the exam I felt he was downright hostile at points.» (Rather poor)

- Spectroscopy part was ok, and well understood, EM part exam was unexpected an vague. EM notes were difficult to understand. Formula sheet for EM was not provided, and lenghty equations were expected to be learn by heart» (?)

- Both parts of the course are worth of two independent 7,5 credits courses.»

- EM-part.»
- EM Wave part feels totally out of place. Lots of fusion stuff and no connection whatsoever to the spectroscopy part.»

16. Additional comments

- Both parts of the course are worth of two independent 7,5 credits courses. There is almost no interaction between the two parts of the course and the extension of each is very large. But the topics of the course and guidance of teachers were very good.»
- The EM Wave part on the exam was something of a shock to me. We had close to no material at all to prepare (a handful of "example problems") and Matthew said we were supposed to know "everything" (including complicated formulas with lots of constants) in the lecture notes (~90 hand-written A4 pages) by heart. It felt like something that would perhaps have been appropriate for someone studying theoretical physics but as part of the Radio & Space master"s program it felt totally weird. I also felt that the EM Wave lectures were very rushed and I believe that the experience would have been a lot better with more time. It"s a pity that the scheduled hours weren"t put to use this time around.»
