Your own effort

1. How many hours per week did you spend on this course?

We mean total time, that is, it comprises the time you spent in class and the time you spent on your own work. Try to estimate the average time over the entire study period.

10 svarande

At most 15 hours/week»2 20%
Around 20 hours/week»6 60%
Around 25 hours/week»0 0%
Around 30 hours/week»1 10%
At least 35 hours/week»1 10%

Genomsnitt: 2.3

- 6 hours of lecture per week, 1 hand-in problem each week which didn"t take more than one evening usually. I dedicated the last maybe five days before the exam quite exclusively for this course though.» (At most 15 hours/week)
- I put most of my time on the Quantum Mechanics course. » (At most 15 hours/week)
- Not enough! The quantum mechanic course took to much time!» (Around 20 hours/week)

2. How large part of the teaching offered did you attend?

Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

10 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»5 50%
The goals are difficult to understand»0 0%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»4 40%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»1 10%

Genomsnitt: 2.1

- On the course webpage there is a part "If time permits, ...". I feel new concepts should not be introduced if time permits, instead its better to really learn what we"re supposed to learn.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

6 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»1 16%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»3 50%
No, the goals are set too high»2 33%

Genomsnitt: 2.16

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

7 svarande

No, not at all»1 14%
To some extent»5 71%
Yes, definitely»1 14%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»0 0%

- The hand in problems were really good, but i think the exam didn""t cover the goals(the course)» (To some extent)
- The exam including the hand-ins covered the goals quite well.» (Yes, definitely)

- The exercise classes were really good. Niklas did a great job! But I want to point out that unfortunately the lectures did not help for my learning. Per is nice and very knowledgeable about the course (and physics in general). But he is, to be frank, not a good lecturer.» (Some extent)
- Niclas Wyllards lectures has been really good, and i have learned alot!» (Some extent)
- The problem sessions hosted by Niklas Wyllard were very helpful. Pers lectures weren"t always as enlightening. I would like to have gotten more metaphors/illustrations of the ideas and less formal derivation of results which is in the book anyway.» (Large extent)
- The importance of the excercise classes cannot be overemphasized when it comes to actually solving the homework and exam problems. They were also easy to follow. Couldn"t be better, really. Per"s lectures gave a good theoretical understanding, although I didn"t understand them so well before reading the lecture notes. One thing that I found a bit irritating was the almost complete absence of concrete examples in the lectures. The so called "examples" in the lectures were often working with generel expressions that still didn"t allow us (me) to get what was happening. » (Large extent)

7. To what extent has the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?

- I found the book to be a bit too talky. But I realize that it is a standard work and that it probably will come in handy as a reference in the future.» (Some extent)
- Quite a good book!» (Some extent)
- I read all of Per"s lecture notes when studying for the exam (oral and written). They are quite good and more or less self-contained.» (Large extent)
- The homework problems and the exercise classes were what I used to learn what I did learn in this course. The book is good, and I read some of it but it takes too much time to read all yourself. With better lectures it would work fine.» (Large extent)
- I"ve read the relevant parts of Goldstein carefully. As the people the year before us said, the parts that lack written material are harder to get good grips on. Lectures alone are seldom exhaustive enough to clarify all details.» (Great extent)

8. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?

- One of the problems was apparently much harder to solve than Per thought. I sort of realised this and didn"t spend too much time on it but I guess it would be good to really check if the problems are solvable before handing them out to students.» (Rather well)

- The quantum mechanics course is of course very time consuming. This course was not that time consuming, but not to little either. I think we learned a lot.» (High)
- The QM course is quite time consuming. Of course it depends heavily on ones ambition with the homework problems in that course, but if one aims for completion of every problem it must be said that it takes more time than is reasonable, even compared with previous years at Engineering Physics.» (Too high)
- QM with Stellan Östlund...» (Too high)
- The workload was too high mainly because of two reasons: 1) the lectures in advanced classical physics didn"t give me anything so I had to spend more time on my own 2) The lectures and hand-in problems in the Quantum physics course were sometimes very confusing. When you spend hours trying to understand the meaning of a homework problem because of wrong grammar, wrong instructions and errors in the problems it doesn"t help that the problems are "not compulsry". I want to learn the course and the best way is to work with the content by solving problems. But, I have given my thoughts about the Quantum physics course in that course"s evaluation questionnare.» (Too high)

Summarizing questions

17. What is your general impression of the course?

Good»3 30%
Excellent»0 0%

- The course contents are very interesting and good to learn. But how the course is taught needs improvements.» (Fair)
- The subjects are very useful to know. The course in itself did its job mediating the concepts, therefore it must be said to be adequate. It was not one of the most exciting courses I"ve taken though, so "Good" would be stretching it, I think.» (Adequate)
- I feel like a learned a lot of important concepts. » (Good)

18. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- Hand-ins, problem sessions.»
- The problem sessions were new for this year and they were very welcome. Goldstein is a good book for the concepts it covers.»
- Excercise classes with Niklas.»
- the course content are good . and the home problems are good.»
- It has to be preserved the website with the notes and the way of theaching (hand it problems, lecture class...)»
- The problem sessions!»
- Niclaas wyllards problem sessions! »

19. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- New lecturer.»
- More exhaustive course literature on concepts outside Goldstein would be nice to have. If it doesn"t exist I personally would go as far as to suggest that the extraneous subjects should be chosen according to its coverage in available books/hand-outs.»
- The lecture on small oscillations is still a big mystery for me. It is the only lecture I really failed on understanding much of. As far as the homework and written exam is concerned, it was also useless. The only calculations we did on small oscillations were covered on Niklas" excercise classes. I think that lecture should either be removed, or changed into a more understandable form, maybe by more examples on what is really happening. Per is often using quite general expressions for e.g. the kinetic energy. I think this only causes confusion.»
- Lecture notes should me more in detains and simpl. no so much complicated.»
- More interaction between teachers and students.»
- To be frank, the lecturer.»
- Pers lectures could somethimes be too messy!»

20. Additional comments

- The grade levels, where 15% fail, 70% get a 3 and 15% get a 5, show that the grading system is a bit lacking in diversity somehow. Even if we weren"t a big class, one should still expect a more gaussian distribution :-)»
