Your own effort and qualifications

1. How many hours peer week did you spend on this course?

We mean total time, that is it comprises the time you spent in class and the time you spent on your own work. Try to estimate the average time over the enture study period.

56 svarande

At most 15 hours»7 12%
About 20 hours»23 41%
About 25 hours»18 32%

Genomsnitt: 2.48

- It was good that you could finnish the projects during scheduled time.» (About 20 hours)
- During the first weeks the lectures and lab etc plus approxiamately 2-5 hours. Last weeks the outside time was 2-5 hours per day at least.» (About 25 hours)
- The number of hours particularly increase at the end of the quarter since the projects become longer to be completed (6-7-8) and there is much more to learn.» (About 25 hours)
- all lectures were awesome except matrix method. » (At least 30 hours)

2. How large part of the teaching offered did you attend?

56 svarande

0%»0 0%
25%»1 1%
50%»3 5%
75%»24 42%
100%»28 50%

Genomsnitt: 4.41

- I missed the first teaching and didnt feel like i was in face later on.» (25%)
- Most of the lectures conserning the tasks, few of the teoretical lectures. » (50%)

3. Do you consider that you hade sufficient knowledge to read this course?

56 svarande

Yes, absolutely»34 60%
In part, but I struggled in places»21 37%
No»1 1%

Genomsnitt: 1.41

- i had a more or less simalar course before» (Yes, absolutely)
- Some lectures sometimes start just by repeating the same thing which was said the lecture before, time could be gained.» (Yes, absolutely)
- Please don"t mix so much chemical industry things into the course. Why would I need to know how a distillation column works?» (In part, but I struggled in places)
- The chemical parts were struggling to me. Thermal separation, distillation columns and evaporation plants.» (In part, but I struggled in places)
- Some things were assumed that we knew, like chemical engineering and it made it a bit difficult.» (In part, but I struggled in places)
- Some chemistry nomenclature was a bit confusing.» (In part, but I struggled in places)
- the chemmistry students had an advantage in most parts» (In part, but I struggled in places)
- Yes for the most part, however there seems to be a lack of understanding that not all students are from the chemical engineering section.» (In part, but I struggled in places)
- I think that the course is to specific to be so close to the start of the masters program, put it after the Heat and power course, I think that would give a better effect. Many terms that are discussed cloesly in the course are done so without any introduction. » (In part, but I struggled in places)

Goals and goal fulfilment

4. How understandable are the course goals?

56 svarande

I have not seen/read the course goals»9 16%
The goals are difficult to understand»0 0%
The goals give some guidance, but could be more clear»16 28%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to»31 55%

Genomsnitt: 3.23

- Actually, I didn"t expect this kind of lectures by reading the title of the course, I feel like it dealed more with optimisation of industrial energy systems than dealing with how energy systems work.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be more clear)

5. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

52 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»1 1%
Yes, the goals seem reasnoable»47 90%
No, the goals are set too high»4 7%

Genomsnitt: 2.05

- The lecture about how distillation/separation column work can be simplified since it"s not that useful and chemical engineering students have already learnt it before.» (Yes, the goals seem reasnoable)
- There are to many demands in comparision with other master courses. Both 7 quite big tasks and a examen that was much to difficult. » (No, the goals are set too high)

6. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

53 svarande

No, not at all»5 9%
To some extent»30 56%
Yes, definitely»16 30%
I don"t know, I have not been examined yet»2 3%

Genomsnitt: 2.28

- The exam is totally different from what we did during the course (particularly no link with the projects). So it does not show at all if we have understood the course.» (No, not at all)
- I thnk the exam was really really BAD. It was like doing the tasks again, but four hours to do what took 30 hours. In one of the examination tasks you used a half page just to specify the task. If you cant make the question shorter the extent is to great. » (No, not at all)
- Some questions in the exam were very strange. Especially Lennarts questions.» (To some extent)
- time was too short for exam» (To some extent)
- I felt like I knew the course but couldn"t show it on the exam. Matrix question was absurd. » (To some extent)
- The examination should be improved. The exercises are too highly rated (too much points for each questions). This implies that only a few areas are treated in the examination, and therefore, if you don"t know about one part, you loose 20% of total points (and it definitely doesn"t mean that you lack 20% of the needed knowledge). Another point is the formula to calculate a heat exchanger area, delta T log: it"s written nowhere in the compendium, we have never used it during the projects, and then we are asked to do the calculations with it?! It"s absolutely nonsense! Most of the people didn"t do the exercise because of this missing formula!» (To some extent)
- two examination questions were more theoretical based.i think those should be problem based. also exam should be much different from old exam.» (To some extent)
- I think that the examination was pretty hard. A lot of people thought they had understood everything during class and the projects, but didn"t succeed on the exan anyway. And 5 h would have been better, a lot of people (including myself) felt that it was hard to finnish during 4 hours. It was a lot of writing and that takes time. But everyting in the examination had to do with the course goals for sure.» (To some extent)
- The examination was not that hard but was a bit strange and different from what one might expect regarding the difficulty and the content of the projects.» (To some extent)
- But the examination is too much theoretical. I would appreciate a bit more problem solving and witty answers.» (Yes, definitely)
- Maybe alittle short of time, due to the Matrix problem. Maybe a more theoretical question on the matrix method.» (Yes, definitely)

Teaching methods

7. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?

55 svarande

small extent»1 1%
some extent»16 29%
large extent»31 56%
great extent»7 12%

Genomsnitt: 2.8

- i like the teaching just before the projects. however the college was too easy. most of the time you could find exactly the same text in the book. There is a big overlap in the lectures (see the slides) and in the story at the different lectures. » (small extent)
- Exchange Lennart for someone else PLEASE» (some extent)
- Good teachers, specially at the task lectures. However I still think that the course is far to specific. You must think of that many of the students dont have a chemictry background. Ive studing mechanics before the course and this course doesnt teach Industrial energy equipment, it teqches chemistry process equipment. I reallly fell that the course should NOT be compulsary.» (some extent)
- Especially the project exercise sessions were really helpfull, the tutors were nice and explained well.» (large extent)
- I missed a lot of them and that would have helped me!» (large extent)
- The excercises and lab was good for the understanding, some lectures were not that good.» (large extent)

8. To what extent has the course literature been of help for your learning?

Genomsnitt: 3.07

- Very expensive compendium and bad quality on it.» (some extent)
- Too many things in the book, and everything even small details needed to be known perfectly for the exam, which is not useful.» (large extent)
- The compendium was really good since it was designed fpr the course and made it easy to follow the lectures in the book if one missed a lecture.» (large extent)
- Really good litterature. But some of the first chapters leaves some questions.» (large extent)
- clear literature, at the end a little bit to extended. (sometimes it is better if we think a little bit for ourselves). » (large extent)
- Very good compendium, very easy to understand the content» (large extent)
- compendium gave most knowledge, but i think very small information is given in that, also some real time problem should be included in that so student can practice more» (large extent)
- Good book. To expensive to be a compendium that falls apart after been used ten times.» (large extent)
- The course compendium was great, but unfortunately the binding quality wasn"t so good so for most people it fell apart!» (large extent)
- The course compendium is really well made (except that the book is physically very fragile, and goes quickly into pieces)» (great extent)
- great compendium, shame it fell apart so easily though» (great extent)
- The compendium is really good, should keep it and maybe give some pists for going deeper in the subjects.» (great extent)
- The book was really helpful, but unfortunately it disassembled, which was quite a large problem.» (great extent)

9. Did you find Powerpoint presentations to be helpful?

55 svarande

- They did not add any information that was not in the book.» (small extent)
- They were a bit too much like the compendium. I could"ve just read it instead. Lectures are supposed to give something more.» (some extent)
- Same as previously.» (some extent)
- try to reduce the overlap» (some extent)
- all the presentation were based on compendium. chapters in that were better than ppt slide, obliviously not than lectures but just then ppt slide.» (some extent)
- As always, far to much information. Make them shorter and present them more.» (some extent)
- clear» (large extent)
- The compendium and the PP presentations are complementary, that"s good. However, some PP presentations were exactly the same that it was written in the compendium and it is pretty boring since you don"t write notes.» (large extent)

10. What was your overall impression of the lectures?

54 svarande

Excellent»9 16%
Good»32 59%

- Some were very uninteresting and slow.» (Good)
- Well organized.» (Good)
- Some teachers were not very interesting.» (Moderate)
- I would like more examples done during the lectures, examples where the teacher do some calculation on the current topic.» (Moderate)

11. What did you think of the industrial laboratory at Renova?

56 svarande

Very interesting»34 60%
Good but could be improved»21 37%
Not interesting»1 1%

Genomsnitt: 1.41

- But felt like it came to early in the course. Read thermodynamics three years earlier and hadn"t used it in large extent since.» (Very interesting)
- The diagram of a absorption heat technology of Renova (in it"s brochure) was helpfull to understand this kind of technology (the diagram of the course compendium and the Powerpoint slides were unclear on that I think). The exercise was helpfull to remind us the use of some diagrams we haven"t went deep into during the course.» (Good but could be improved)
- The calculation for the steam turbine is happenong before seeing the course about it. It is then difficult to understand the theory. » (Good but could be improved)
- Better tour in the plant» (Good but could be improved)
- in Renova we just calculate COP and heat duties etc, but did not seen integration of foreground and background process, a real time task on this topic should also be included» (Good but could be improved)
- The walk through was quite quick and it was difficult to hear what the guide said.» (Good but could be improved)
- Very interesting, but what is the point to go on a short field trip and use 70% of the time on a calculation task?» (Good but could be improved)

12. Do you consider that any of the project exercises were irrelevant for the course? Please specifiy

Please state clearly which project your comment refers to. Start your comment as follows: "PXXX was not relevant because ..."

- no i don"t think so, all exercises were absolutely relevant.»
- I think all projects were good, but the exam should be more connected to them, or the projects should »
- all the projects are relevant.»
- No the exercices were the best part of teh course, every thing was interesting.»
- All of them gave some new knowledge.»
- All were relevant.»
- No»
- last exercise»
- No, they were all intresting.»
- very good projects!»
- no, all projects were very relevant. »
- None»
- projects were good, but those seems to me like problems of any book. those were not real industrial projects, solving real problems give more practice and confidence »
- No»
- I think they was good. But the supervisers can work in the same way. Some of teh supervisers corect in 1 day and some took 14days.»
- no»
- all of them very relevant»
- No, the projects were relevant regarding the lectures and the content of the course. Maybe the difficulty of P1 (basics of pinch technology) could be a bit more difficult in order to see more cases.»
- No»
- Project 7»

13. The project excercies are obligatory to help you study on time and to help you work through all parts of the course. What would be the best way to help you achieve this?

56 svarande

to keep the project exercises as obligatory»30 53%
Approved project exercises yield bonus points at the exam»23 41%
All project exercises must be submitted before the exam»2 3%
Other (please specify)»1 1%

Genomsnitt: 1.53

- The project should remain obligatory, but they should yield some points at the exam. I, for example, had all my projects approved on first time and I handed them in at the end of each session. However, I did not feel very good the day of the exam and I think I didn"t do very well... so it"s frustrating, and what I did at the exam does not reflect exactly my knowledge.» (to keep the project exercises as obligatory)
- Definately helped me with the course!» (to keep the project exercises as obligatory)
- maybe grade the projects » (to keep the project exercises as obligatory)
- Again, I don"t think it covers all parts of the course.» (Approved project exercises yield bonus points at the exam)
- It would be good to reward the work that we provided in project. » (Approved project exercises yield bonus points at the exam)
- If all project reports were handed in in time maybe 1-2 bonuspoints would be good. But it"s good to be able to hand in hand written reports too so you don"t have to spend so much extra time writing reports.» (Approved project exercises yield bonus points at the exam)
- I think the three options proposed can be used together: -keep the project exercise obligatory to help us study regularly -give bonus points for each project exercise approved on first try or really well done, to encourage us do our best (and don"t fell like we are "loosing time" writing them down) -oblige students to submit all their project exercises before the examination (so that before the exam" all people have gone through all part of the course) and, before the exam", give a correction of the project exercises (the correction can be one of the "best" project exercises written by students so that you do not need to write a correction, maybe you can just add some interesting extra comments)» (Other (please specify))

14. Today students are given written feed back on the project exercises after completing the project. How would you prefer getting feed back on the project excericies:

56 svarande

As to day, by written comments»39 69%
By getting a written solution after completing the exercise»5 8%
Discussion in small groups with the the tutor afterwards»8 14%
Individual discussion with the tutor afterwards»3 5%
Other (please specify)»1 1%

Genomsnitt: 1.6

- perfect, we can ask the teacher by ourselves if the comments ar not clear. » (As to day, by written comments)
- But the comments can be more clear» (As to day, by written comments)
- Sometimes a formal written solution could be given even if there is not just one solution.» (As to day, by written comments)
- And if you have any questions you can discuss them with the tutor.» (As to day, by written comments)
- Or if the exercises were computationally made at least some of the formulas used.» (By getting a written solution after completing the exercise)
- To some extent it would be good that the examiner had a walkthrough about mistakes made in the project and have a discussion about it.» (Individual discussion with the tutor afterwards)
- By discussion with the tutor afterwards, either with the person you were with or alone, but with the tutor having read the project exercise before (so that it is more or less as with the writen comments, but by talking to our tutor, we can ask directly if we don"t understand a comment, or the tutor can ask if he hasn"t understood something we meant, it is more practical)» (Other (please specify))

15. How well did the course administration, homepage, handouts etc work?

56 svarande

Excellent»23 41%
Good»33 58%
Moderate»0 0%
Poor»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 1.58

- one of the most organised courses I have taken.» (Excellent)
- I think this course was really well organised: - the project exercises subjects were given a bit before (to be able to read it) - the schredule for the course/exercises was given from the beginning of the course and respected - it is interesting to have the opportunity to express ourselves thanks to course evaluation comitees and satisfaction questionnaires - all the powerpoint presentations were online on time But it is a pity that we have to print the powerpoint presentations by ourselves... I know not everybody wants it printed, but maybe have some printed powerpoint presentations at the beginning of the course could help (maybe it would be nice to do a poll via the course homepage to know who wants them and who does not, in order to print enough but not too much handouts)» (Excellent)
- Nothing to criticize.» (Excellent)
- The needed time for the assistants to correct the projects varied alot and was really long for out group» (Good)

- Dont like that it is so chemistry process specific. Its to early in the program and I think it should not be compulsary. Iam not interested to work with destilation plants or pinch technology. Keep the course more basic if its to be compulsary and than be more specific in the design of industrial energy system course for people thats interested of the field.» (Fair)
- but really hard» (Good)
- Added a lot of information that I did not know before. Heat pumps. Heat exchangers. Maybe a little to much focus on big process industri and not so much what one can do at a smaller industri or plant.» (Good)
- A good organisation, clear objectives, interesting subject. But difficult to understand the theory behind the tools we are using (why does the pinch analysis method work for example)» (Good)

30. What improvements can be made to next year?

- More exercises and clear theory.»
- Course compendium should be improved. Its not clear and also not straight forward.»
- Smaller groups for the project exercises, sometimes you had to wait a long time just to ask a quick question»
- More course material about what one can do to make improvements in smaller industries.»
- Explain better where do the method/tools used come from/why does it work. Do groups of project exercises with less people in them because they were quite crownded (maybe do 5 project exercise groups ?) Most of the time it worked well, but sometimes we had to wait a long time before getting help.»
- The powerpoint slides»
- The examination was a lot more difficult than it needed to be.»
- More material»
- give assignment to individual student. so that he can learn more when he is doing the assignment individually. because my group member work herself and not help me.»
- One thing that annoyed me was the lack of acctual questions to prepare for the exam since doing old exams clearly was not enough. How is one supposed to get experience with calculation when there is no such questions to practice on. What is a Binary destilation column?? I have not seen the word binary in any of the course material, chemical engineers might but not me.»
- The only "surprise" was the exam whan I start studying for the examination. I expected more similar to the projects. If I had known that i would have start earlier. So please be more clear about that. »
- More time to asking questions and discutions.»
- make all lecture notes available at studieportalen at course start. »
- More numericals and problems in the course compendium. Include more references in the course compendium for further references.»
- The points distribution in the examination and lectures of Lennart Elmeroth. Moreover, the exam should be more close to what we have done during the projects.»
- more real industrial problems should be included in course. i feel this is very important.theory base question in exam should be avoided.»
- More time for the exam or less time consuming questions.»
- If the course should stay it should be later on in the program.»
- Make sure cremona supplies compendiums that don"t fall apart.»
- more consultation time before the exam, possibly more time between the last project and the exam. add "no comment" options to the questions in this survey. Make the pages fit better to the back of the book in the compendium.»
- Give a more detailed correction of the old examinations»
- The exam where a bit to big for the time given.»
- The exam was very very difficult.»
