- Didn"t really know what to do, except going to the classes. Apart from the assignments which were quite diffuclt but you learned alot.» (At most 15 hours/week)
- Most of the time out of class was spent to read the corresponding section in the book + eventual homeworks» (At most 15 hours/week)
- the differnce between the beginning and the end of the period was very big. it could have been nice to have more homework assignements in order to be forced to start studying earlier in the period.» (At most 15 hours/week)
- There is a lot of reading to be done. The subject (and litterature) is rather demanding, so re-reading some earlier chapters and connecting them to knowledge gained in later chapters requires a great deal of time.» (Around 25 hours/week)

2. How large part of the teaching offered did you attend?

Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

The goals are difficult to understand»0 0%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»4 40%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»4 40%

Genomsnitt: 3

- It is maybe difficult to give very clear goals as the level of the course is high, and thus it is offcourse hard to understand all of the objectives stated in the begining of the course» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- Read them before exam studies, gave a clear understanding on what i needed to learn.» (The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

9 svarande

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

No, not at all»0 0%
To some extent»1 11%
Yes, definitely»8 88%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2.88

- Yes, were not any big supprises on the examination, thus it felt like if you had aimed to understand the goals atleast a pass should be no problem» (Yes, definitely)

Teaching and course administration

6. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?

10 svarande

Small extent»0 0%
Some extent»2 20%
Large extent»6 60%
Great extent»2 20%

Genomsnitt: 3

- The course is theoretically heavy, lectures were mostly packed with information. So making small "breaks" for discussion/exercises was great and really necessary in my opinion. Without that one would learn much less from lectures.» (Large extent)
- It"s great that the principles taught during the lecture are the subject of discussions and that each discussion group gets time to discuss their ideas with the lecturer. It is also good that a lot of focus is put on explaining concepts, principles and diagrams/figures from the book using visual aids of all kinds. The only thing that bothered me was that the slides contained a lot of equations, that where, to some degree explained, but since they are in many cases complex (especially in the later lectures. I think that the basic equations should still be derived and explained in the way they where presented now) and you are not directly required to be able to derive and make calculations with them, I find them less useful.» (Great extent)

7. To what extent has the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?

10 svarande

Small extent»0 0%
Some extent»0 0%
Large extent»6 60%

Summarizing questions

13. What is your general impression of the course?

10 svarande

Poor»0 0%
Fair»0 0%
Adequate»0 0%
Good»6 60%
Excellent»4 40%

Genomsnitt: 4.4

- Would prefer all assignments being put together to one, which cover all parts.» (Good)
- a very hard course, one of the difficultiest I have.» (Good)
- It"s a very rewarding course! You have to put in a great deal of effort, but the returns are well worth it! The course goes a great deal towards explaining phenomenon, that previous courses have just touched upon or briefly mentioned, in much greater detail. This process creates a logical underpinning that I think is useful and should be mandatory for all students in material sciences. » (Excellent)
- Probably one of the most interesting course i took during my master in chalmers» (Excellent)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The last week handout with study questions was very good and gave a easy way to get a feeling for what you had missed and what you knew. Weekly assignments should also be preserved. Maybe even more assignment if the level on them is resonable, that is to not make it take way to much time to solve them...»
- *Time for discussions *The use of lots of different visual aids *The litterature *»
- Assignments, short discussions and exercises during class.»
- Most things, but especially the study guide/repetition hand out in the en of the semester. It could actually serve the students well to recieve it already in the first study week. The interaction between teacher and students was at least for my part very giving for the understanding. »
- the assignments and the extra points they can give for the exam.»
- The help questions to prepare to the exam. I would even have more lecture time on it. It is a good help if the student understand its benefits.»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Due to low participitation on the classes I can"t answer this»
- *Equations (mentioned earlier)»
- I"d like to suggest a list with home exercises that you get at the BEGINNING of the course, to be able to learn to use the equations->better understanding of the subject. Ideally a few exercises for each chapter. I think this is better than mentioning suitable exercises during lecture, I doubt many people will remember to do them.»
- One of the tasks in the first hand in was rather hard and it would benifit from more guidence.»
- Tell the students about the 3rd assignment on describing a phase transformation at the beginning of the course and make it a bit longer, i think 1 page was a bit to short to tell everything to fulfill the requirements .»
- I would ask for a longer period of time between the exam and the last lecture.»

16. Additional comments

- If I could decide, I would split this course in two parts. One part that focuses more on the basics (Free energy->phase diagrams, diffusion etc.) and is mandatory during the first semester of the master and a later, elective course that goes more into details. If the basic course ran along the engineering metals course I could see a great deal of interaction with the potential of greater understanding in both subjects (where the Phase Transformation course could focus more on the physics behind and the metals course more on how it is realised in practice and the resulting material properties.»
- Thank you!»
- This is a kind of teaching I not a fan of - I need the lecturer to write on the board not only reading powerpoint presentation.»
- A very well planned and well executed course. A tip of the hat to you!»
- Thank you»
- This course give a large among of knowledge in a quite short time. »
