Genomsnitt: 3.9

- A bit hard to follow sometimes.» (Neither good nor bad)
- Very good structure and explanations. The hours were a bit poor though (8am and 3pm)..» (Good)
- Maybe remove some of the contents to be able to slow down the pace somewhat and to introduce more disscusions. After going through a new important abstract concepts - give the students 3-5 minutes to discuss it with nearest sitting classmate. It has been shown that it is very important for the learning process for students to try to put their own words on things they just learnt.» (Good)

2. To what extent have the lectures been of help for your learning?

11 svarande

Not at all»0 0%
Some extent»3 27%
Large extent»7 63%

- The teacher had written the course book, so the same things were handled. The lectures were also complemented with topics from ongoing research, which were interesting!» (Yes)
- They went hand in hand. - I don"t know if I would phrase it as "complemented" though...» (Yes)

4. To what extent has the Matlab introduction been of help for your learning?

Genomsnitt: 2.72

- I was well aquainted to Matlab before, but it was a good start to have the basic code for the GA.» (Not at all)
- Maybe it would be better to get it on paper - so that one has to type it in by hand - but I"m not certain of this..» (Very large extent)

5. To what extent have the home problems been of help for your learning?

11 svarande

Small extent»0 0%
Some extent»1 9%
Large extent»5 45%

- They were quite fun problems but almost too large. And the descriptions of what was to be done was a bit too brief for misunderstandings to be avoided.» (Large extent)
- They were very time consuming though.» (Very large extent)
- They have been the greatest "source"/inspiration of/to knowledge in this course. Fun! But too much in hp 2 with the truck model - it could have been made slimmer or something else could have been removed.» (Very large extent)

6. What is your impression of the course literature?

Course literature: Wahde, M. Biologically inspired optimization methods

11 svarande

Very poor»0 0%
Poor»1 9%
Average»1 9%
Good»5 45%
Very good»4 36%

Genomsnitt: 4.09

- It"s a very good book in the sense that it contains a lot of knowledge which would be hard to get by in other ways. But it is a bit to compact and thus sometimes hard to follow. Some things could be expressed simpler using natural language instead of a complex-looking mathematical formula. But maybe that"s just me. :)» (Average)
- Excellent literature. One of the best course books I"ve had. Short, accurate, concrete. The only problem was that it was a bit expensive.» (Very good)
- Very good book - but very expensive.» (Very good)
- This is one of the best books I have had.» (Very good)

7. How well did the course administration, web page, communication etc. work?

Very badly»0 0%
Rather badly»0 0%
Rather well»6 54%
Very well»5 45%

Genomsnitt: 3.45

- The link from student.chalmers.se was pointing at an empty page, so had some problems finding the page at all. Besides that it worked alright.» (Rather well)
- It would be good if the link from studentportalen was updated. Right now its linked to the Bachelor project at AM instead of the course homepage...» (Rather well)
- Good with a regularly updated homepage!» (Very well)

Your own efforts

- Homework problems took lots of time!» (About 25 hours)
- Hard to estimate.» (About 25 hours)
- When doing the homeproblems it must sometimes have been >50hrs...» (About 25 hours)
- A bit hard to answer this question when you couldn"t do so much in the first weeks, even if you wanted to. The problems in the first home problem set was much easier than in the second. The course were really unbalanced on when you could spend your time on the problems because of this.» (About 25 hours)

- Maybe having an exam is not even necessary with home problems of this size? In these types of courses, home problems is in my opinion a better way to test knowledge.» (Yes, to some extent)
- As earlier stated - This is what I assume since I do not really remember the formulation of the course goals clearly enough.» (Yes, definitely)

Summarizing questions

15. What is your general impression of the course?

11 svarande

Very poor»0 0%
Poor»0 0%
Average»1 9%
Good»6 54%
Very Good»4 36%

Genomsnitt: 4.27

- Extremely interesting topic, really fun home problems!» (Good)
- A very useful course, and probably one of the most interesting I"ve taken (in a while).» (Very Good)
- I liked the contents of it and the form of examination.» (Very Good)

16. Is there anything you think should be changed until next year?

- Maybe only home problems and no exam. Also maybe references to further reading for parts that are difficult to understand.»
- The labs should not include unit tests (as in the first lab). »
- Maybe there should be one lecture for algorithm analysis (proofs), and/or recap of statistics.»
- Divide the workload between HP1 and HP2. HP1 was much easier than HP2.»
- A bit less for hp 2 as stated. And more discussions (see ans question 1).»
- go through some proof maybe..»

17. Which areas do you think need more emphasis (or less emphasis) in the course?

Topics covered: Classical optimization, Stochastic optimization (EAs, PSO, ACO), (Matlab) programming

- Maybe look at more SOAs? Only 3 is kind of cheap for a SOA course. :) For example Reinforcement Learning and Simulated Annealing would be interesting. Must also admit Classical Optimization might not be the most fun thing in the world. :)»
- Good as it was.»
- None.»
- It"s fine as it is.»
- programming»

18. Additional comments

- I want to stress the points given in my ans for question 1. Fun course!»
- I think that I lost too many points in the home problem sets on minor mistakes. It"s a bit boring when you put a lot of effort in your report and solving the problem and get deduction on such things. It seems more of measuring how good I am at following exact rules of how things should be done and less on how good I understand the problem and how to solve it. Also some of the problems that you had to do by hand are, in my opinion, ridiculous. For example, in HP1.1, what"s the point in computing the minimum with x many decimals, _by hand_? Personally I think it"s enough to show that I understand how to solve it. Also in HP1.3c), where you were to show that g(x1, x2) is a minimum analytically, this felt really unnecessary. I could"ve done that years ago and I really felt that I didn"t learn anything on that problem, just wasting my time, especially on writing the solution in latex.»
