About the course

4. The course book (Cleland) and the 14 articles

Matrisfråga

- The book was easy to read and the articles interesting. Definitly i would have paid to get all the articles together as a "little book".»
- The Book was a bit too basic in order to actually provide me with some interestings aspects.»
- The book is a bit repeting which may depend on all the different authors.»
- The course book was sometimes a little too basic.»
- I think the nukber of articles was not enough to be able to answer questions, neither in the exame or the project. More articles should have been presented but not set as cumpolsery reading.»
- Instead of the course book, maybe more articles! Course books is often a lot of text without addressing any interesting than basic facts»
- Didnt have time to read.»
- I do print the articles, and think it is better to read them like that. But would maybe buy the compendium anyway.»
- Some chapters were highly irrelevant I felt, thus it would be helpful to choose the most relevant parts of the book to read since it was a lot of pages to read and I hadn"t the time to read them all. »
- Considering, the fact that I only referred to the book twice during my Take-home and the research project work. I think that it was fairly expesive referrences.»
- Good articles!»
- I did not have time to read the book»
- The Cleland-book, helped me to get deeper understanding about tje subject. I liked it alot. It was very easy to read.»
- There is alot of material to read, I don´,t think we even have enough time to read both courses material and projects, even if all lectures are good.»
- The book was available from the library as an e-book, if you known about it should be very valuable information for the students. If not, you know now. »
- It would be great to have also an online version of the book»
- I should be mandatory in all courses to provide all the articles in a printed compendium. Can YOU CALCULATE the man hours needed for 60-70 people to print those damned articles! We are well over 60 hours here and then I haven"t taken into sccount the congestion that occurs at the printers --> ad several more hours to that. Now we have not yet come to the time needed to put staples and arrange all the articles in an ordner! This does not mean that I do not appreciate pdf-articles. They are good because you can quik search them for content and keywords. »
- "I would have paid 120SEK for a printed compendium of the 14 articles" - DEFINITELY! It would have been worth the money!»
- I think it would be very good if you print these articles and hand them in the class. So students who attend the class have the opportunity to have them for free.»

5. The Home Exam

Each question is a statement, to which you may or may not agree.

Matrisfråga

- Co-writing has been very good tool due to the sharing of knowledge and discussion of different ideas.»
- The homeexam was good and interesting and made it possible to have a reflective thought throughout the exam. »
- The home exam was a little too much focused on the FFE.»
- The first two questions touched the same topics, would have been more intresting with more seperated questions.»
- The last question was a bit vague but still interesting. A preparatory Writing Skill class I think might be a good idea, since all the students are from such different backgrounds and accustomed to different writing-standards»
- Questions of the type "discuss" can perhaps be a little bit hard to grade.»
- Please be VERY!!!! Careful when formulating the questions. Unskilled question formulation wasted over 1 day for me significanlty impacting the result on both this AND the other home exam. This is NOT acceptable! Specifically I certainly hope that the person writing question one does NOT correct my exam as the person evidently cannot understand the concepts he/she use him/herself.»
- You divide the questions of the home exam, leadning to that you know more about the questions that you have written in the first place. But regarding these questions you learn much from discussion with someone else. The result gets better.»
- Just examples of how good home exam writing vs bad home exam writing would have been nice to see»
- The format of the exam was nice. But the quetions were horrible constructed, especially the first one! If it is the Fuzzy front end, state that, and if not, do not say the early phases of a stage gate model. How should we be able to know what you mean.»
- I did not do the best choise of co-writer»
- The co-writing home exam was a good experience, I definitely think that I have learned more by doing this than if I have did it by myself.»
- It was more of discussions between other of my classmates regarding the questions that I answered rather than with my co-writer. Writing one and one should maybe increase the understanding, for me at least, on all questions but on the other hand should the answer not be as good as I was now when we could use more energy on one-two question rather than three. Another thing is also that the total workload for the exam period if writing alone on everything should be too high. Just above 90 hours did I spent in total on the exams. »
- The second question is not really suitable, becuase it is hard to know if We understood the questions right and how to answer since don"t have any results yet.»
- There was a complete question that I did not work on (his question), and there was a complete question that my co-writer did not work on (mine). Finally, both seem to have lost something that we could have learnt, but instead we increased the probability for a higher grade. (what is the aim at last??) »

6. The Research Project

Matrisfråga

- The research project was nice, but MANY times after supervision frustation was the MAIN feeling! things become more confused !!»
- I would have preferred to have the presentations earlier, in order to use the feedback to improve the project. »
- I think we can give our last reports after research project presentations, because after getting feedback from other students can be useful for making last changes in our report.»
- The presentations should be held earlier so that there was a change to improve the report before hand-in.»
- the problem with the presentation and opposition is that it s after the project has been finalized. What can be goods with this is part from moving it to before the last date, is if the host encourage to make the changes for the benefit of looking better to the company.»
- It was good to have this research project as it kind of was a first project with people from other countries. As the differences was great, I learned a lot.»
- Had some trubble with one guy in the group, who dropped the course 4 weeks after the project work begun..»
- Perhaps the project presentation can be valued for 5 points of the total research project? Would increase the motivation to give a good presentation on the basis of all the members earlier skills.»
- DONT MAKE RANDOM GROUPS! Incompetent student fuck up my grades and learning, swedish or not makes no difference.»
- Regarding presentation skills, it would be good if the supervisor could give direct response to the presentation style (like Magnus Holmén did in the other course).»
- I felt it would be better to have a project where can try and work as a project manager. Use the microsoft project, plan a small project. Smaller groups and maybe 3 small projects with only pass-fail. The project in its current form doesn"t provide the old I-students with anything more I feel. »
- Too short time frame to have the chance to make anything useful out of such an open ended research question.»
- The supervisions were not so good because the supervisors were not allowed to give us any help. They only told us what we already new, for example that our purpose were not good, but we did not get the help we needed. We spent a lot of time reformulating the purpose when we could have learnt about project management instead...»
- About frustration with other students: Swedish people do not seem to have a tendency to make a constructive plan in the beginning. They rather just start and try to change the whole thing (in this case the report) whenever they realized it did not work out (Funfact, it often starts with: "Yes. BUT don"t you think..." <-- Trigger for rewriting). In that sense it was a bit frustrating not to succeed in implementing a bit more structure into the working group. It is a chapter in intercultural awareness. About supervision during presentations: Jennie did not give any feedback on presentation skills. In my opinion many students perceived it as very positive when Magnus Holmen did it in the economics of innovations course presentations.»
- Hard to do this short research work at a company since they didn"t really provide us with "all" information.»
- As mentioned, I would like to have the presentations before the final delivering of the project. In this way we can have the feedback and the opposition of our project and the opportunity to make some corrections before the final handing.»
- It was not that our supervisor was bad, but I do think that the work instructions could much better from the administration. “,I cannot tell you what to write.”, and that might be fair but thanks to the lack of clear and helpful instructions in how to improve our purpose, did we ended up spending most of our time in rewriting the purpose. I know you argue that we need to practices to write in a scientific way to prepare for the master thesis, and that is maybe good in a way, but I do not think that the focus on a course in MDP should be on that. I took this course to learn about project management. Another thing is also in the first meeting we had so did we have a purpose with us, or at least an idea of what to write about and then we did not get the feedback that we received later on that the subject are hard to cover. I.e. that it was very broad and a lot to write about. Some feedback on how we preformed during the presentation, should be very good to improve our presentations skills.»
- The supervision of the project was great in terms of enhancing the work in the group but constantly frustrate all the members and confuse the orientation of it (leading to a worst result in my humble opinion)»
- Also the peer grading for the project should be re-evaluated, I didn"t have any problems, but I heard some people had problems, perhaps it was because of cultural differences, by that I mean Swedes don´,t understand international students, they think we are like them, but we are not, we have a lot of different cultural backgrounds, as international students we come here open minded, but the swedes treats us like we already know how they work in sweden, and we have no idea. maybe it will be good for swedes to have a little chat or presentation before the program starts about the cultural differences they will encounter when they start their master program in order to be open minded and remind that we come from a very different situation.»
- I would like to have som kind of guide for project memeber evalution and feedback given directly at the project work beginning. This could serve as a good foundation for intial discussion before project start with the group .e.g. ambitions, way of working... And let all groups hand in a small document on this one to hinder leapfrogging of this important step. »
- Our supervisor Jan gave us good ideas and I got a new level of thinking, but he was confusing for our report. In other words I lerned a lot but I think we could get better grade if he just supported our thoughts»
- Two important things: 1. Divide the results of this survey in two groups, suedes and international students. You will have a pretty good feedback from this results. 2. Do not let, in the future, groups who already have worked togheter before, do it completly random or let them make their own groups. »

7. The Lectures

There are two questions for each topic. Content means "I recognize the contents of this lecture as important for my future performance would I pursue a career in product development projects", and Presentation means "I recognize that the presenter made a fine effort of presenting the topic"

Matrisfråga

- Really enjoy the different topics during the class and the structure of the course!!!»
- Most of the lectures were good, however, I never understood the Volvo lecture, except that we need to sell our product.»
- Nice with many guest lecturers. I liked Jan"s illustrative examples.»
- i have used the short cut story through the whole seven weeks. YCC will be important to me because it really opened up my eyes when it comes to behaviour. I partly used this lecture to study the how the class reacted and was very scared by the results-e.g. the clear difference in how many men that left the room compared to the women. It is also interesting to reflect on the climate that was left after the break-much nicer. The bad thing is of course that the presentation was for 45 years old women..»
- I think that the lecture with MS Project can be swaped out, although Lars did a good presentation I think Jan did a good job with integrating a reflective approach throughout the course and this I think was one of the most important things. »
- I dont remember the classes. It is too long time ago. I would have liked a more close integration of ms project in the course. maybe some sort of "Lab" and mandantory inclusion in the projectwork.»
- Jan W, Maria E and Dave W lectures is crucial to understand the course. Most of the other ones are good, but not crucial in the same way I think.»
- Next year drop the IMPA presentation, please. It would be enough just to mention it exists. I did not feel I learned so much at the lecture with Ilya, or I did not get the message.»
- I don’,t find really value added the IPMA presentation, it was more like a marketing presentation of the certification, perhaps the topic can be included softly in other lecture just to mention the existence of organizations that certifies you as PM. I really like and find very practical Wenell presentation, the dynamic of the lectures was very good, making examples of the models clarify how we should use the tools and the overall of the PM. I have learned what is a good presentation with Jan’,s lectures, the sequence, examples, movies, content, histories, it helps to capture the message of the lecture, I can say that he takes time to improve continuously his lectures. »
- Most of the lectures were very good, however more of practice project management tools should be very useful, for examples as Dave did with network analysis etcetera. »
- I think that both presentations Estimating Project Work and Your Concept Car were a waste of time. The only thing I learned was that some people have a very different opinion regarding the use of a car, specially women (I want to see the engine and hear how it roars!).»

8. The Pre-readings and the Literature Seminar

Matrisfråga

- Literature seminar should exist once a week or once every 2 weeks, it should not be mandatory but would be nice to have a place where students can share understandings of articls.»
- I would have liked to litterature seminars regarding two areas, I think I, as well as others would have learned a lot more. »
- There should be more literature seminars. There is of course no time to discuss all the obligatory readings, but 3 literature seminars would fit.»
- I think, these literature seminars can be given begining of the course or do these activity peridicly in whole course.»
- Very good, but it should be held earlier though so you realize how you should read and reflect on articles.»
- Very good concept that should have been used earlier. Perhaps it would have been good with one early and one late seminar on different topics.»
- If the seminar would be hold in week two, articles would be read and discussed in another way among us students. »
- Have the literature seminar earlier in the course, because it helpes you to start reflect of what you read in a better way. »
- Have the litterature seminar earlier in the course»
- It can even be suggested that this seminar is put earlier»
- Tom was very skilled! cred to him!»
- Earlier I have not been quite fond of literature seminars but this time I really learnt something.I think Tom lead the literature seminar in an excellent way. It was good that he sometimes directed questions, since this made it easier to enter the discussion. He brought up interesting subjects to discuss. »
- we should have more of these!»
- I would suggest that the literature seminar should be in w.3 or w.4 so an better understanding is reach earlier in the course»
- Put the literature sem. earlier in the course!»
- I felt more that you needed to perform rather than a possibility to discuss, with the signs and everything.»
- I would have liked to have more litterature seminars and also earlier in the course. It was a very good way of making sure you read the articles and also a good practise of talking in a group. It was intresting to hear what other people made of the articles.»
- I like the literature seminar, it encourage us to be more critic, I think this is a good excersece to have it two times during the course.»
- More of this, for all of the articles! Earlier in the period, why not the second week or so? Good way to start to read and reflect. »
- Tom was sometimes a little bit too dominant and lecturing sometimes more than allowing us to discuss. But in overall i handed it well »
- Very good! I really liked the seminar and it felt that all other student did so as well! I fully understood the articles after this seminar.»
- 1. It would be better if students could have more and better information about this seminar (available on the student portal or similar) 2. It would be good as well, to have it in the begining of the course or in the middle, and not in the end. My humble opinion. »

The mandatory hand-in helped me better prepare for the seminar

9. Round-up questions

Matrisfråga

- Really hope to earn a little more money!! ,)»
- Yes I think that the academic writing style can actually reduce the sharing of knowlegde to some extent »
- I think the report writing took too much time since we did not get much help with it. We could have learnt much more about project management. It would have been better if the supervisors could help us more.»
- I"m still confused about the objective of the course. If with the course you wanted to make of us better Project Managers, the course was definetly too theorical. However, it seems to me a perfect course if you pretend to instruct researchers.»
- I am not used to the academic writing style, as well as many of the other international students. I had to learn "on the exam" how to write it. I do not know if it reduces the sharing of knowledge, but I do agree to academic writing limits your own development of the answer when writing it, maybe it may happen when you are not used to it, so I speak for my self.»

The academic writing style is too complex and thus, ironically, reduces the sharing of knowledge

- This class together with Economics of Innovation might not be the best combination, both requires a lot of reading that a normal person (even if we read 24/7) can"t keep up with. In the end, I felt that it was unstrategic that I read the book, I should have put a lot more effort at the articles. On the other hand, if you are teaching out trade-offs, the amount of reading is sufficient to fully understand trade-off.» (High)
- for first period, starting period, it is too much for me that two courses both have prpject, articles, ake home exam, course book and 8 hours lectures everyweek.» (High)
- High workload because of the project work.» (High)
- Depends on project work effort and what grade you aim for.» (High)
- Especially in the end of the project and home exam. I did not have time to read the book.» (High)
- To high to have time for all the reading, otherwise okay. » (High)
- Please put litterature seminar or litterature quizz or similar in the BEGINNING of the course end of 3rd/ 4th week and coordinate DEADLINES with Magnus Holmens course. To maximize learning and minmizing stress for us i.e. the student syndrom is always there. » (High)
- High, but not too hígh. This study period was demanding but in a good way.» (High)
- Even though I think it was a bit high, this is a master program so it supposed to be high. It is OK.» (High)
- Reflecting now on that I must have put at least 35h a weak, of course that is too much when you have another course. Us students on this program are used to strive aginst perfection and a research work can be worked on for a long time. Therefore it is very good to have a page limit. » (Too high)

- 9412175399» (Good)
- Started out in an excellent manner, but drop the further the course did go one. I do not know if the subjects to discuss ended or if it was the frustration with the lack of directives from our supervisor in the project. » (Good)

18. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- guest lectures and the literature seminar, the movie was also a nice part»

- Seminars, project work»
- Lecture Seminar, more than one and earlier.»
- The research Project.»
- Jan Wickenberg and "Dave the Fighter Pilot".»
- Mr. Dave williams»

19. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Have the presentations earlier, introduce two literature seminars, but reduce the overall reading in the course. »
- schedule the seminar at the beginnin of the course.»
- More literature seminars.»
- Hold the presentations a few days before final hand-in»
- If the microsoft project should be kept, it has to be encouraged to use right away. »
- Have the preliminar hand-in of the project earlier. Have the presentation before the final hand in so you can use the feedback you get on the report.»
- The time for the literature seminar should be earlier. the home exame should be posible to conduct without literature outside the course»
- IPMA and Microsoft Project lectures»
- Not much, maybe swap out some lectures like the MS Project that was metioned»
- Some of the classes were a bit hard to get a grip on since the subject was often only mentioned once. it"s good with different lecturers that know their subject but since they are so into it it might come across as difficult for someone new in the area. it is somewhat difficult to get a good oveview and understanding when the different topics are presented so separated.»
- Formulation of qestions in home exam. it was deplorable!!!»
- Some of the lectures (see the assessment of the lectures above). Maybe change the book, tends to be too practical.»
- Presentations of the RPW before final hand-in, then you get the opportunity to respond to the feedback from the opposing group.»
- I think the time for presentation should be longer and also graded, for instance constitute 5-10 percent of the whole graded. »
- the project»
- the book.»
- Less guest lecture »
- YCC presentation»
- A bit more information on the handouts, will enhance understanding during home exam»
- IPMA should be removed»
- Change time for the litterature seminarium.»
- the book»
- The evaluation for the Research Project, I think only makes student to try to do all the work just to demonstrate that they work more instead of enhancing the Team Work and everyone´,s cooperation. A lot of swedish students did not want/will to work with international students so this difficult a lot of the team work, maybe to evaluate and measure this will be helpful, to avoid this kind of discrimation.»
- Research project supervisor"s meetings. They should be MORE useful...»
- Guest Lecture: IPMA - Presentation (Beatrice Silow)»
- The lack of directives in the supervisions, the goal must be that we should have as high understanding of MDP as possible after this period and that means at least for me that I can learn about the subject instead of discussing how to formulate the purpose. Which we did for a lot of hours, a lot. I don´,t think that we gain much from writing a scientific report, very few are in this class to be Ph.D. students, prepare us for the reality instead. »
- IMPA and MS project sessions. I had the feeling of being into some kind of promotional speech rather than a lecture»
- Your Concept Car and the Estimating Project Work lectures. »
- Put the literature seminar early on in the course. Introduce project work already the first week. »
- Less to read»
- I missed more attention to presentation skills, and also of how to deal in a project with the problems that might appear among the members.»
- Methodology of literature seminar.»
- giving grades by the other members of the group is a completely bad idea. We are not qualified to judge eachother. It would be really nice if you propose the project, so we can choose our group ourselves. mix of swedish and iternational students is really disaster. As Swedish are not nice to foreigners. I had one of the worst experinces in my life with working with this group, and I probably can not get rid of it for a long time.»
- MS Project class. »

- suggestion: people working in pairs (not 3), to work in a case related to each important chapter of the course book and discuss it. At the end of the course everyone has to speak. The case is given 3 or 4 days before the disscusion. After the disscusion the teacher says what really happen, what was the decision made and what was the consecuences of that decisions. »
