Your own effort

1. How many hours per week did you spend on this course?

We mean total time, that is, it comprises the time you spent in class and the time you spent on your own work. Try to estimate the average time over the entire study period.

14 svarande

At most 15 hours/week»4 28%
Around 20 hours/week»5 35%
Around 25 hours/week»5 35%
Around 30 hours/week»0 0%
At least 35 hours/week»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2.07

- Having the homework problems towards the end of the week ate away my weekend. I think, having the homework problems in the beginning of the week might help more students to join the course.» (Around 20 hours/week)

2. How large part of the teaching offered did you attend?

14 svarande

0%»0 0%
25%»0 0%
50%»0 0%
75%»8 57%
100%»6 42%

Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

14 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»2 14%
The goals are difficult to understand»0 0%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»2 14%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»10 71%

Genomsnitt: 3.42

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

12 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»0 0%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»12 100%
No, the goals are set too high»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2

- Yes, the goals are reasonable but apart from this. I would have preferred a little more time spent on Quadratic forms with more examples showing the connection with Hilbert spaces preferably with applications. Also, a little more on the Matrix calculus linking with applications (Kalman/Wiener, etc).» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

12 svarande

No, not at all»0 0%
To some extent»5 41%
Yes, definitely»3 25%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»4 33%

Genomsnitt: 2.91

- I don"t know how to interpret these 72 hour examination. I guess, this gives ample time to search the topic on the internet. Maybe, a better assessment would be to have a regular 4 hours open book exam such that what is taught is examined than find out how to solve a new type of problem formulation. This is just a thought, I have not completely analyzed the pros and cons of a 72hour exam versus 4 hour.» (To some extent)

Teaching and course administration

Great extent»3 21%

Genomsnitt: 2.85

- The topics such as Observability/Controllability presented in the book wasn"t good enough. Mats Viberg"s material was much better. Its good to have both the material but when learning something new its better to refer an understandable source. The lectures were good on this topic but the book was vague in some sense. Would be better if Mats Viberg"s material was provided much earlier in the course. » (Large extent)

7. To what extent has the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?

- although the book is too concise» (Large extent)
- Course literature is very thick in Mathematics (expected) but would be easier for students if they were recommended other books such as Gilbert Strang"s lectures on MIT"s OpenCourseWare/youtube should be recommended for those who are fresh to Matrix Analysis. This will definitely help those who are not familiar or forgotten matrices :D I guess, this might also help more students in taking up this course. And for those, who want to go further, Golub/Van, Horn and Johnson should be recommended. As the by Alan J. Laub is a short text but was heavy reading, it inculcated a habit of looking for other material. Thus, for me, it was a great learning experience, thoroughly enjoyable.» (Great extent)

- We spend too much time resolving homework in the lecture. » (Fair)
- More details on applications on how the concepts that we are learning is used in real life.» (Good)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- no idea»
- The home exam and the exercise session when the students solve the problems on the board»
- The course structure, like the homework problems being solved by students on the board and discussions that follow there on. The jokes :D»
- problem solving seminars once a week»
- The way of approach. Like making the students to work on the board with the exercises.. »

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- maybe it could be more efficient for the lecturer to give all the solutions in excises session. Students could hand in home work before that.»
- It is better the professor give us standard answers to the homework, instead of spending much time explaining it in the lecture.»
- The possibility to ask questions to the teacher »
- Perhaps the text book or the way students should approach this book. The book by Laub had a lot of references to positive definite matrices, eigen values/vectors even before defining what they are. The book seemed to jump to and fro. Maybe, a unique different way of learning this subject than the way conventional books have treated.»
- some exam questions which seem not mostly important, problems for every week should ALL be solved on each seminar(by student/teacher),it"s not good to leave questions to next lecture.....»
- Maybe include more applications and go into more detail with numerical problems that can occur.»
- It would be better if the exercises to be worked out for the next week be handed out before thursday.. As because the weekends are completely dedicated to this course.. »

16. Additional comments

- General comment on this portal for all other course evaluations so far: I would prefer this portal to be open atleast after 4 lecture weeks so that one can fill in details on what one feels of this course. Things or particular experience can be logged and saved. Re-edited if needed at a later date and submitted by the deadline. Or the system should be intelligent enough to take the last saved data after the deadline. This way there is a possibility of reaching 100% in this evaluation process. I hope these ideas help.»
- Great course.. and great lectures»
