Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

8. How understandable are the course goals?

Course goals:

After the course the students must be able to:

Plan experiments according to a proper experimental design. Choose the appropriate experimental design for different circumstances.

Analyse and evaluate experimental results properly according to different methods (ANOVA, regression ...)

Describe and apply fundamentals (in statistics and exp design) such as hypothesis testing, degrees of freedom, factorial design, and regression and so on according to course material.

Master students (KBT120):

Understand and apply fundamentals in multivariate data analysis (PCA and PLS).

18. What is your opinion about having a discussion-lecture concerning Sustainability in this course in experimental design

- no opinion»
- its very much necessary discussion-lecture inorder to understand the application of that course»
- It"s a good idea to integrate different parts of the education and also very important that a engeneering student is allowed to discuss and reflect on her own.»
- Not really enough..should work on it longer!»
- it"s good enough but let make it more interest with interest topic»
- It was nice, but as mentioned not in the course goals. »
- I think the discussion is good enough, it is give me a new look for the sustainability perspective for the industry.»
- Never, I"m not from this program. So if any student from different program is interested in this course, then by considering thus kin of discussion-lecture he or she has problem.»
- Excellent. It complement the course some how.»
- Not very good, mostly a waste of time. People already have thought about what was brought up, and gave little new insight.»
- not relevant»
- Could be interesting»
- A good why to learn more of the interational students thoughts»
- Good, It was important»
- I believe we get enough of left-wing propaganda in the media. =)»
- don" know»
- More practical examples. Intergrate it in the project. For example: add an variable which has to do with the envoirement. »
- It will be a good addition because many of us are also taking Global sustainability course, so it will surely have a positive affect.»
- not bad..»
- Unnecessary, waste of time.»
- Take it away, it was a waste of time.»
- Helped alot in completing the final report.»
- Good»
- There have been alot of different courses that have already done this. Good for the students that maybe haven"t got any experience from this kind of discussion otherwise it didn"t add anything new.»
- It"s reasonable to incorporate it in this course.»
- I think its hard too get a good discussion in such a large class. I think that the subject is very important but mayby discussions in smaler grupps would work better? »
- It must be a part of this course.»
- it is a very good idea to have a discussionaout sustainability in the experimental design course »
- While the idea has some merit, the format and execution in general rendered it pointless.»
- The questions had were obvious answers, they were almost a little bit silly. »
- Quite interesting. It raised the connection to reality.»
- The lecture wasn"t very nessecary for the course.»
- Very good.»
- I dont think that this is a good idea.»
- If the course is sustaiable?»
- it was a very good lecture to balance the things we have learned about otimization processes and goals overall for companies. social, environmental and moral responsibility are such important aspects, more of a basic point of view that can"t be emphesised enough to students. »
- Intressant, men inte jätterelevant för kursen.»

- as usual, i can"t understand what the teacher is saying or writing. maybe powerpoint slides should be prepared instead so that less time is spent understanding him and trying to figure out what he is writing..» (Poor)
- Not enough help from the tutors.» (Poor)
- No one could hear what Jan said! But he is a good teacher when you come to his room to ask questions..but not in the classroom among other students!» (Poor)
- Jan Rodmar is barely audible when lecturing is Swedish, but when speaking English (a language of which his grasp is tenuous, at best) he is all but incomprehensible. » (Poor)
- It"s rather difficult to follow because Jan is not clear about what the question is (except for what is printed on paper) and how to interpret the assignment» (Fair)
- Very difficult to hear what Rodmar was saying, his english was rather poor and he just kept on mumbling by himself. He could explain man-to-man but not in front of the whole class.» (Fair)
- Calculations / tutorials seemed to be very direct on some instances. Calculations should be a bit more elaborated. » (Fair)
- Tutorials are good, unfortunately Jans english isnt» (Adequate)
- Bra grundlig genomgång, men lite för sakta plus svårt att höra föreläsaren.» (Adequate)
- all times same calculations» (Good)
- I suggest, how if every student solve some number of problems, which are diffent among them and then present/explain it each of them in front of class. It would be more interested in encouraging to study, and many problems can be done also» (Good)
- May be we need to put some written instruction for what we have to do in each tutorials sections, so it will not confusing the students.» (Good)
- Thorough analysis, although slightly too time-consuming. At times difficult to discern what was being said.» (Good)
- It would be good if the calculations were presented at studieportalen as well. » (Good)
- Hard to follow some times but that is partly my own fault » (Good)
- Without the calucaltion lectures the course would hav been very hard do manage. It would also be good if you can give Rodomar a micropfone for next year so its easier to hear him. Becous he was a very good teacher for teaching how to calulate.» (Good)
- Some calculations could be explained more detailed» (Good)

24. What do you think about the optimization project?

- very good»
- its good project and astudent learns a lot from this. but it describe a little about industrial application»
- Tedious at first, we got introduced to the project without any real means to handle it. It got better.»
- Perhaps it should be changed to fit the international master students since their preknowledge is limited.»
- it would have been better if we had gotten more information about how to use reduced factorials and such. it was the same thing over and over again. the reports were very time consuming»
- Interesting but the guidelines are often not really clear for each session»
- Great..interesting and useful..wishing become chemical engineer to run plant»
- It was very learning. But the force to work with an international student should be omitted. They do not posses a adequate level of understanding for this topic, not in MATLAB nor in statistics. They limit my own effort when I must work for 2 or ore people, and do not contribute to the advance of the project. »
- The project is good enough to practice the experimental data in the "real world", but may be I need to learn more about the optimization since the optimization chapter was given at the end of the project.»
- Please include more knowledgeable assistants for this part. The people we had were so hard to understand.»
- Great and should maintain this method.»
- I wanted to use the new one»
- It was very good and helpful. Somewhat better explanation of the methods would have been useful.»
- The project was really challenging and interesting. Thanks»
- Good way to learn»
- It was very interesting to see the use of experimental design in a (almost) real life application. I believe however that the matlab routines could have ben left out or perhaps introduced later in the project. The use of steepest ascent and other methods could otherwise have been tried and learnt from.»
- very good, interesting and useful. »
- Interesting project. You get a feeling of how it would be to work in real life.»
- The "learing-by-doing"-thing was really good, thou it was next to impossible to get any help from the teachers.»
- Good»
- interesting, but i can"t understand what the teacher is saying, spent most of the time finding out what i"m supposed to do instead of understanding what i"m doing»
- Good»
- Very interesting and I learned a lot!!»
- It was very good, felt real. I learned a lot from the project.»
- optimization project was a good project esp in matlab. »
- Very interesting and fun! Learned a great deal doing it. »
- A really fun project. Really self learning project which put the pressure on us students to understand what we are doing. Fun part with the "The game". In the algorithm in the game does it take into account the different profit maximum etc? Otherwise a really nice project!»
- It was really good to get the opportunity to practice what you learn in the course in some kind of "realistic" case.»
- I thougt that it was interesting and challenging. I do think that we could have recived a little more knowledg before we started. »
- Project optimization gave me understanding about a lot of things related to Experimental design concepts. The only thing which sort of confused or you may say worried was that whenever in the group we had to do project lab assignment the background about that was not clear. It was only once we had gone through the experiments a lot of time, we realized, ok this is what we had to do. Course supervisors really did their level best to make us understand the whole thing but due to large number of students in project lab either a group"s turn would come after hours or a group wont get enough time. I think before going for a lab, the task or assignment must be uploaded on course homepage, with a little bit of background. So that students can read the task before coming to the lab and thus have clear cut idea right from 0800Hrs what they are upto not somewhere at the end of lab. »
- we need to know how to optimize the process »
- Very good. Learned a lot from it even though it was kind of frustrating in the beginning. Maybe they could give out some more information in the beginning beacuse it"s not that clear what we are supposed to do in this projekt when the coarse starts.»
- good»
- It was a quiet good idea to have such a project, but much more time is needed to spend in the begining of the project to understand what we are actually going to do. »
- The difference between pilot plant and projection plant wasn"t well explained by the tutors. Otherwise it was a good way of learning.»
- 1: It"s clearly not okey to develop a project for the bt students and then not letting everyone attend it! 2: It"s very contradictory to advise people to use the trial and error method, and then have a game where you win if you have done everything correct from the beginning.»
- Gives some knowledge of how it can be conducting a real optimization, though a little too time-consuming from the self-study.»
- Very fun and exciting!»
- Really good.»
- It took a lot more time than the amount of knowledge it gave, otherwise good.»
- I loved it! A very fun way of learning some basics in exp design.»
- it was a very good way to understand the course. a bit frustrating it the beginning, as we were told=) but in the end contributed alot to the course and was fun.»
- Jättebra, man var ganska vilsen i början. Fick mycket kunskap innan det gicks igenom på föreläsningen.»
- It came too early in the course and was confusing. It was stressing to not have enough knowledge.»

33. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- more emphasize on problem solving»
- reduce the amount of course and also decrease the number of lectures.»
- The project. Its not fun to work with two persons that cant contribute to the project.»
- the lectures are notreally good in the way that we study a method after using it in the project... it should be the opposite to avoid a waste of time and to be more aware of what we do...»

- Introduce scheduled time to have an opportunity to ask questions as the course is proceeding. »
- There were to many problems in the exam. Also the exam didn"t feel right for the course, sections that had been covered a lot in exercises and lectures didn"t show up in the exam.»
- more exercise questions as questions.»
- Nothing I can think of at the moment.»

- it should be good with some lectures were you are abel to ask questions.»
- It is unacceptable to have calculation seminars with a teacher that can"t speak the language. It is hopefully not intended as an exercise in understanding worthless English!»
- More demonstrations of how calculations are done, not just show us the formulas. It is not obvious how the formulas are used and which values that are supposed to be included and how. There should also be more solutions for the exercises available, and they should be a lot more explaining. Yes, it is good to try and think on your own, but with these exercises it was too much. The classes did not inform enough, so many exercises was very hard to solve.»
- Maybe Claes could add som calculation lectures, since Jan didnt have a quiet moment at his room for the last two weeks before the exam.»
- Discuss multi variate data analysis as a compelete dourse.»
- The exam task should be less time consuming, I hadn´,t enough time to show what I have learned. And the course goals are a bit fuzzy. Quite much included in exams are not included in the lessons but. It would be better if the goals were more detailed so there would´,t be any doubt. It would be great if watch was included, perhaps one every week or one at the end of the course, where you were guaranteed that teachers were available to answer some questions.»
- It felt like the robust design entried very late in the course, so you didn"t have much time at learning steepest, nested, and robust in the end. Especielly when it was very hard to ask questions during lecture time since everybody wanted to ask their questions then. Try to translate more exam solutions so people have more old exams to study. »
