Goals and fullfilment of goals

The overall purpose of the course is to provide all students, regardless of their subsequent choice of master programme and design studios, with a foundation and an ability to creatively and critically consider and reflect on questions related to the planning, design and management of the built environment within a context of sustainable development. To independently seek knowledge and information from different sources, as well as to reflect upon the implications of the vision of sustainable development in relation to architecture and planning, constitute important parts of the course.

The purpose is, moreover
- to provide an orientation and an understanding of different perspectives on sustainable development
- to present different approaches to the implementation of the call for sustainable development within the planning, design and management of the built environment at different levels (global, local) and in different settings
- to encourage critical reflection regarding what the notion sustainable development entails for the planning, design and management of the built environment and for professional practices within these fields.

- actually, it would have been more helpful if we were investigating a system rathr than a building presentation. It could have been a suggestion or a system more related with our own study on architecture, and having the possibility to discus it with the architects as it may work or not,or what are advantages/disadvantages» (?)
- It was really good to sit down and collect my thoughts in the end of the course, it make me realise that I had learnt much new things.» (Rather big)

- Good course, with many different takes on sustainability issues. Maybe an orientation in non sustainabile discourse could prepare us for discussions as well. » (Very good)
- I really liked this course, it"s one of the best courses i have taken in Chalmers.» (Very good)
- very well organised by Lena and the assistants! good choices of texts that goes well with the lectures. no more to say, perfect!» (Very good)

12. What should be preserved for next year?

- Tyckar att kursen som sådan fungerar väldigt bra i befintligt skick.»
- I was most shaken by the justice perspective and the discussion about the valu of the services nature provides us with»
- Visit to Passivcentrum, Films, Presentation of Assignments I liked the schedule of this course a lot. The fact that we were attending one course for the last weeks was making it possible to concentrate on one subject and really get to the essentials.»
- The engagement of the teachers, the combination sources of information: films, lectures, texts etc.»
- The seminaries are really good, and all lectures, and film are great.»
- The reflecting part in the end, it was then I realised the meaning in the course and in my own work for sustainability.»
- everything as a whole works fine together»
- Almost everything (see below)»
- The collobration of lectures from different disciplines under the same topic, sustainability. It gave us the wide scope of sustaibability instead of thinking only abot build environment.»
- The diversity of the topics regarding SD. Happines, democracy, gender topics, etc.»

13. What should be changed for next year?

- Det enda som varit mindre bra var studiebesöket till Alingsås. Dock inte besöket i sig utan att det tilldetlas så lite tid för besöket till passivhuset. »
- Gender issues are important and relevant in sustainability issues, but that wasn"t well developed in Merrit Polk"s lecture.»
- Some of the guest lectures were rather poor for example the one about gender equality and the one about biomimicry. Two very interesting aspects but presented very poorly. Furthermore, a few of the students didn"t participate in the group discussions of the seminars which was frustrating. But I liked the multicultural/international atmosphere in general very much. It was encouraging to think outside Europe"s borders even more regarding different cultures, climates and political systems.»
- The terms of the second seminar. At least in our group, it made the seinar rather stiff and there was no time for discussion - just presenting the texts. Some days were very intense, with lectures from 9-17.»
- For the seminar, especially the first, I thought it was to many articles to read. For me it was the first course on english ever and I"m not used to read in english so it was much to understand. But the seminar went well, but maybe it would be a bit more discussion if everyone had read the texts deaply.»
- one lecture that I think did not fit in was gromark. »
- The Anna Jiremark"s lecture MUST BE CUT OFF! Sustainability for children?! What she"s saying, and in that erasing the previous four weeks of learning, is roughly: sustainability is only about ecology and we in the west are basically ok with what we"re doing - as long as we "think of" consumerism. (!!!) So well below the level of everything else! Another thing is that the second seminar should have been held earlier. How about a week after the first? The kind of reflection that you get after such gatherings is, I would say, crucial in being able to state an own perspective. Some of the final presentations were just summaries of what we"ve all been told, and that"s just not enough.»
- We were over 120 taking the same course, and it was in a big dark salen, it was the first days, and we as the internationals didn"t have the chance to meet with others, due to the place, and more like a audotorium than a class. It could have been better if we had some studies in smaller groups (in additon to seminars).»
- More updated films. »

14. Other comments

- Vi har tidigare haft intressanta kurser på Chalmers men den här bräcker många av dem. Mycket bra genomförand av kursen.»
- tack för buffén!»
- I think this course has to be done earlier in our education. Or parts of this course should be implemented in earlier years, maybe in year one, it"s to important issues to be in fourth year.»
- A very well held course, and a good start of the term. Makes you really want to work in-depth with Sustainability issues. Well done! (The only thing I don"t understand is that Anna Jiremark lecture. Was it scheduled to make us angry and produce better?!)»
- Overall it was a fantastic and full lerning experience. I would recommend to have at least a lecture with someone who doesn"t believe in Global Warming, so we got some other perspective that might strenghten ours.»
