Your background

In most questions below, I have included the possibility to tick if you are a "Bioteknolog" (i.e. a student in the 5-yr Chalmers Bioengineering program, Bt) or if you are an international master student in the 2-yr Biotechnology program. This is to be able to distinguish if there are any differences between how the Swedish bioengineering students and the international students experienced the course. I am sorry for the inconvenience but I did not know of any other way to handle this. /Calle

(To some extent)
- The calculations theirself were not so hard to understand, but I lack the experience in matlab to be able to make the calculations. I could not have solved them on my own. On the Biotech. prgm. we have not used Matlab for real for a long time... The "refreshment guide" we got was good, but it did not explain the more advanced calculations that had to be made in this project.» (To some extent)
- Though I think that the aim is good for this part, matlab is too hard tool to learn these items. Alot of time is spent solving small problems with the program algorithm. The general concept about the problem is quite easy to understand, but to implement these in matlab is far too time consuming. The concept with only one teacher present during the simulation lectures is a limitation to the learning process as well. » (To some extent)
- The excersies were a little bit to many to be able to solve them all in the time of the course. Many of the quiestions were also quite similar and it felt a little bit repetitive. Kind of killed the interest in simulating bioreactors with all those repetitive questions..Perhaps it would be better to reduce the questions into half the amount. Also it would be nice with more people helping during the matlab sessions since it was hard to get the help you needed.» (Yes, definitely)
- It was a good exercise. But its a shame that you have to be good at Marlab in order to succed with it, even if you do understand all the mathematics behind it. Maybe a better way would be to be given parts of the code and having to fill other things out such as mass balances. And then being asked what will happen when certain parameters are altered, and why.» (Yes, definitely)
- I think that the it was rather fun to do the exercise, for the first time I really understood what I was doing with Matlab. However I think that they were a bit to extensive. It could have been enough with just B3, B4 and C2.» (Yes, definitely)
- We got to understand how different parameters affect the product and biomass production in bioreactors, which from the name of the course seems like something we should learn. » (Yes, definitely)
- We have not yet recieved any comments on our Matlab report. » (I don"t know)

- however, it is alot too hard for me to learn matlab within this short period. however, after alot of hardwork, I learnt to know abit» (To some extent)
- if it is possible, I think it is better to give a short discriptional lecture about the Matlab to whom don"t know Matlab, instead of paper discription. since for whom never used matlab before, the paper is less helpful.» (Yes, definitely)
- To some extent, it is hard to international students.» (I don"t know)
- It was way too difficult. We do not have enough knowledge in matlab. A project were you recieve a matlab program and then change a bit and vary parameters would have teach us much more about bioreactors and to think of what is mathematical and biological factors. We did not have time to do that so much, since all time was used for getting the matlabprogram to work.» (I don"t know)

Teaching and course administration

10. How did you like the overall arrangement of the course contents?

This question pertains to the whole course content: i.e., the mix of lectures, the lecture notes, the computer exercises, the literature assignment, the final exam, the split exam form (with points from both exam, research proposal and exercises), the course homepage, other information about the course etc)

- I think that some of the lecturers was just presenting their companies, and i did not learn anything from these lectures. For example, the guy from Chr.Hansen, showed pictures from the company, which felt more like a study visit than a ordinary lecture. It was interesting, but not something that you can build a course around. Several of the other guest lecturers had a similar approach. » (It challenged my abilities and contributed to my learning)
- I think it is unnecessary with a written exam since there were so many other forms of evaluation of the knowledge. Better if the lectures were obligatory. I also feel that it is confusing what to study for the exam since all the lectures were so broad.» (Arrangements were good, showed the contents from many angles)
- It was much to do, with both the literature assignment and the Matlab report, and then an exam as an addition to that. I think it would be better if only 2 instead of 4 exercises where included in the Matlab report.» (Arrangements were good, showed the contents from many angles)
- the exam feels a bit redundant when having put so much time and effort on the exercises. though it is great that we get points for the assignment and exercise, that is motivating and makes you want to do them and learn from them. » (Arrangements were good, showed the contents from many angles)
- Most of the guest lectures seemed to advertise their own company and not focusing very much on bioreactors. So it was hard to know what to take in from their lectures, and thus know what is expected of you. Other than that the lay-up was good.» (Arrangements were confusing, made it hard to see the content)
(Arrangements were confusing, made it hard to see the content)

- The matlab project destroyed it all. I think you, Calle, work really good to make everyone satisfied with the course. IT is also good to hear what companies work with, so very good to have invited so many. But hard to know what you should learn from these lectures, maybe have mandatory lectures and no exam. The evaluation sheet we got from Lisebet after the project proposal was very good, it is not often we get a whole sheet of comment. Thats is really useful so we know what is good and what can be improved.» (Adequate)

23. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The lectures about vaccines and massbalances.»
- litterature assignment, Fun and very educating. great to get feed back!»
- The litterature project»
- I think the "introduction" lectures by Calle were really good, because you got a chance to get into the subject again.»
- Writing a project proposal»

- The lectures about vaccines, mammalian cell culture and production of bioethanol. The stucture with three examination parts (Matlab, literature assignment, and exam) can be good but some changes have to be done.»

- Matlab.
- litterature assignment»
- I think the mammalian culture lecture was great!»
- The three parts of the course, literature assignment, matlab and written exam.»
- The lectures and the effort Calle put into this course. The proposal was also good, but it can be changed a bit. Matlab need to be changed as well.»
- the literature proposal and the individual/ group feedback..»
- The matlab project.»
- Project proposal»
- Reasearch proposal»
- litt proposal.
- I do think the Matlab exercise should be preserved, however it could be good to make it a little bit smaller.»
- Written literature assignment report»
- Matlab part and proposal part»
- i like that there are 3 parts and that can pass the course without passing the exam, takes away a bit of the pressure for the exam especially when having put so much time on the other 2 parts»
- literature assignment»

24. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- There should be at least one more supervisor that you can ask for help during the exercises. There should be a proper course book. You should pass by doing just 2 Matlab exercises since they are very time consuming. Examples of "real" research proposals should be distributed. It is unreasonable that the students cannot ask Lisbet questions on email about the assignment.Have some phD students as supervisors for the litterature assignment and then Lisbet can merely be the examinator. »
- exercises in matlab should be scaled down a little bit. See my comments earlier. Unnecessery to have a written exam when there were so many other exams in the course.»
- That you only have to answer 2 instead of 4 exercises in the Matlab report.»
- More teachers on MatLab exrcises»
- mat lab part»
- It should not be mandatory to finish all examination parts, instead Matlab and the literature project should be used as opportunities to get points for the course. If you do well on Matlab and the literature assignment, you should be able to skip the exam. You should not create the groups for the Matlab sessions and expect "Chalmers students" to teach Matlab to foreign exchange students. Lisbeth should have fewer rules and try to encourage the students a bit more. As it was this year, I was put of by all the demands and requirements and did not feel as if I would ever be able to do the literature assignment correctly. Also, an example of a project proposal could be useful as a reference. The structure of the Matlab report should be explained earlier in the course, so that the students can try to write it as they finish the exercises.»
- -Fewer simulation assignenments -Not decide in forehand which students are going to work together. Let the students form groups by themselfs. I"m not interested to work with a student that never have used matlab before. I cannot get any feed-back and I"m not interested in spending time learning an other student matlab from scratch, that is the teachers job!»
- More lectures according to the title bioreactors - control and design if possible. It was not always easy to see the connection between the title and the lectures.»
- The matlab excercise should be a little bit easier, it is better for international students.»
- The amount of exercises should decreased. Maybe you should skip one of the projects. »
- Matlab exercise so it becomes a bioreactor exercise.»
- coumputer exercise. »
- More requirements in the litterature project.»
- Make the exercises with a ready program code, so we just change parameters to illustrate what is happening.»
- Matlab report was a little hard»
- Ithink all parts should be preserved next year as well.»
- it is a possibility to not have an exam but then you can ask for more from the students for the exercises. another possibility is to have the exam but maybe less exercises or rather less programming, have a finished or almost finished program and let the students change parameters and to make them really understand the bioreactors and what effect the changes has on it. »
- the matlab excercise, it is too difficult for international student.»

25. Additional comments

- This evaluation is a little bit to large. takes to much time.»
- although workload of this course is too high but teachers lisbeth and calle are very co-operative and nice to the students.»
- As it works today, I will only get 35-45 points for the two assignments, eventhough I spent a lot of work on them. Some other students I know will get 45-55 without even writing a single line of Matlab code and only writing two paragraphs for the literature assignment. This is because the other persons in the group do all the work and the foreign exchange student only tag along, without contributing. Instead of pushing everyone through (letting everyone pass the two assignments) people who lack the skills or background knowledge to complete the two excercises should be able to only do to exam, and try to pass the course in that way. It is not fair that Chalmers students are expected to cover for other students that are not contributing!»
- It was good to incorporate guest lectures, even if a lot of the information was like a commercial for their company.»
- Additional tutorial classes for the exercises are needed. The exercises where at too high level for the international students, they didn"t contribute a lot, which increased the pressure on the rest of us. The literature assignment could be more clearly described in the beginning of the course. The expectations were a bit too high on the assignment, for the help that was given.»
- overall i am happy with the course content.»
- I did not konw matlab at all before this course, so the matlab excecise was hard to me. I hope it can be easier next time.»
