- Very few social activities for both international and Swedish students. Foreigners are not invited to V-committee events but only invited to events organized by CIRC (which is for the whole school not specified for Civil engineer). The study trips organized by the department were though positive.» (Poor)
- i am an "outsider", dont fit in :(» (Rather poor)
- The project work was good and the study trips were very good. The social activity of the V department is more for younger students and not appealing to older students in the masters program.» (OK)
- Mixed student groups was a very good way to get the students to interact, but besides that there was nothing really that made a better contact between the students.» (OK)
- There must be a swedish familly assigned to each international student so that he finds a familly over there in sweden so that he may not feel home sickness and depression and this is of utmost important so that he gets invlove in swedish life as soon as possible.» (OK)
- It may not fit everyone with mixed student groups. We aim at different grades, i got a 4 in structural system but had a 5 in the dugga, the rest of the group was not aming at higher grade.. It can be a problem, but in most caeses good.» (OK)
- Mixed student groups with students from other countries was very good in the beginning since we had to speak english.» (Good)
- I think it was one of the strong points of the program and it should be continued and emphasized.» (Good)
- The excursions in the beginning of the master programme are very good to meet other students.» (Good)
- Especially for the new students, the mixed student groups is a great way to get to know people. Otherwise it can be quite hard entering a class where most students already know each other. » (Very good)

- But some of the courses where extremely bad. (Material Performance and Heat & Moisture)» (Yes, the level was appropriate.)
- The project in course of Structural Systems even though it seemed to be very wide open at the beginning creating a feeling of chaos to prepare it, finally it ended with the best result combining cooperation, work experience and lots of knowledge. Very good impressions from this course.» (Yes, the level was appropriate.)
- In some courses it felt like a lot of repetiont since some of the exchange students did not have the same background as the swedish students.» (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- At least I had two of the four mandatory courses in my bachelor degree and they were too amateur and basic.» (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- Material performance was too similar to byggnadsmaterial» (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- Material performance very much repetition on basic course.» (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- I had already studied the contains of Structural systems and Material performance. But it was almost better for me, because it gave some time to adjust to a new school and also to learn how you build in Sweden.» (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
(No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- The heat and moisture course was pretty useless for swedish students, because almost the entire course was about already known material. » (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- building performance design part was to low level from the bigining» (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- Första terminen var mycket av repetition. » (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- NO, just repetition all atum. Exept the FEM - basic, no need for basic level in the start, you must have higher demands on the students. » (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
(No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- That would be good with more structural engineering courses less material and moisture knowledge. However, structural system is a good introduction course.» (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- In the course material performance it was to much repetition.» (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- The courses "Structural systems" and "Finite element-basics" hade an appropriate level but the courses "Material perfomance" and "Heat and moisture" had a very low loevel, to much repetition » (No, the level was too low. (Please, specify))
- In the first semester students must be enrolled in social courses regarding universitty life and swedish culture and swedihs langauge course and english course and computer courses required for further courses. And in first semeter students must get optional subjects» (No, the level was too high. (Please, specify))
- No preparing english coure. No real preparing over-all construction course» (No, the level was too high. (Please, specify))

- It felt like some of the mandatory courses were just put in to fill up the amounts of credits for "master". Since I alredy knew which diretction I was interested in some courses felt unneccesary.» (Not at all)
- I had studied structural systems and material performance in my bachelor degree and they were very very basic and they were not in the level of master studies. In addition, I already had decided about my major of study and courses related to building physics engineering like heat and moisture did not make any sense for me.» (Not at all)
- Too "research focused" courses. Very little practical information.» (Not at all)
- heat and mousture and material... could be improved alot!» (Small extent)
- Se ovan.» (Small extent)
- FEM was only good course during the autumn. The topics in the other courses was good, but the courses was not good organized and thought trough.» (Small extent)
(Small extent)
- Structural systems, Material performance and FEM-basics were rather good courses and valuable for all students regardless of future specialisation. The course in Heat an moisture engineering was completely useless and gave a very poor impression of Chalmers for the external students and was very dissapointing.» (Small extent)
- The Heat and Moisture course was not well prepared from the teachers » (Small extent)
- Did not take FEM» (Some extent)
- "Structural systems" and "Finite element method" felt valuable. I would have liked "Heat and Moisture" if it had been organized. But since I do not think it will ever be organized, I think it would be better if it is not mandatory. » (Some extent)
- The courses in FEM and Structural system formed a great basis. The Material Performance and Heat and moisture didn"t really learn me much of interest for a structural engineer.» (Some extent)
- I don"t like that I had to read courses about construction even though I"m just interested in Building physics and HVAC. I think the students should be able to choose there own courses in the fourth year.» (Some extent)
- But some of the courses where extremely bad. (Material Performance and Heat & Moisture)» (Some extent)
- I followed the Structural engineering branch. I think the course on heat and moisture engineering was not of much of help for my further studies.» (Some extent)
(Some extent)
- Structural system and FEM basic was good. Material performance was poor and heat and moisture was worst course ever.» (Some extent)
- The heat and moisture course does not seem to have a lot of influence on my later studies but I admit that structural engineers should know about it.» (Some extent)
- The course Structural Systems was very good. The courses Material Performance and Heat and Moisture Eng. were not as good. They were more or less a repetition of "Byggnadsmaterial" and Byggnadsfysik" and could have been replaced by more useful subjects at least for students attempting to take a Structural Engineering master.» (Some extent)
- Heat and moisture was a big joke!! The same course as in the bachelor programme but in english..Heat and moisture!!!!! Do not include this as a mandatory course!!! NOT GOOD!!» (Some extent)
- in my opinion, most of them are perfect except heat and moisture» (Great extent)

14. What topics did you miss among the mandatory courses? (Please, specify)

- More structural engineering courses.»
- Extra Abaqus introduction»
- Some introduction or a short lecture about Project management or design management. Some good tips on how to work efficiently in groups»
- The name of structural engineering implies that we should learn about structural mechanics more than every thing else, but unfortunately we did not have any course regarding this among mandatory courses. Mandatory courses were more related to building physics. I missed courses like theory of elasticity and plasticity, design and loading of slender structures, advanced engineering mathematics and many other courses wich are common all over the world except Sweden for structural mechanics. I think we could have the course material mechanics in the second semester instead of heat and moisture in order to be able to take the advance material mechanics in following year. Also I think we could have the course steel structures in the first semester rather than structural systems.»
- i didnt like the examination form (bonus points) in the intr. F.E.M course, I failed...»
- nothing»
- Seismic performance of stone masonary structures Seismic performance of brick masonary structures Seismic performance of conrete strucures»
- Should have been less fem, perhaps another constructional course with fem in it if fem now is that important.»
- No topics were really missing.»
- no,»
- ---»
- HVAC»
- Structural engineering courses More knowledge of how to model sections in,for example, abaqus or ansys. »
- Hard to answer about something you have not faced. »
- I would rather see that the course structural systems (or somethong similar) would be given throughout the entire semester. Either divided in a project part and a theoretic part consisting of load calculations and introduction to EC. Heat and moisture could be removed as a course but subjects could be introduced in this 15 credit course.»
- Installation»
- A course in ABAQUS since it took alot of time from other courses where we were supposed to use the program to try to learn it. A course in 3D modelling could have been useful as well (but maybe not mandatory)»
- General and practical information about different building materials, their properties and suitable combination.»

15. What topics included in the mandatory courses are not relevant according to you? (Please specify)

- Heat and moisture. Material performance - felt like taking "Byggnadsmaterial" again but in english.»
- It would be great to even have possibilities to choose 1 or two of the mandatory courses»
- They were all interesting and relevant.»
- firstly, heat and moisture engineering is a basic course not a master course all over the world except Chalmers. Secondly, if it is a master course it is not related to structural engineers at all. In addition, having three basic course like structural systems, heat and moisture, and material performance as mandatory courses of a master program is ridiculous. It means we can take the degree of structural engineering by passing such these courses but a structural engineer the course concrete structures is not mandatory for the program. »
- Material performance, Heat and moisture»
- The courses Material performance and Heat & moisture must be better!»
- Structural engineering»
- FEM basics for students that will choose Building Performance Design.»
- I think all the topics are relevant.»
- nothing»
- Material perfomance The knowledge needed for structural engineering is covered in the bachelor degree courses»
- too much fem, and those fem courses are not good. They were too theoretical. I wanted them more linked to reality. »
- Well, the topic of Material Performance and Heat and moisture could have been valuable if it concentrated on the right stuff, but the content of the courses felt sometimes irrelevant.»
- heat and moisture»
- "heat and moisture engineering". 10% av innehållet var nytt, typ.»
- Construction. I don"t want to work with that so it"s a bit stupid that i have to read so many courses about it, there is a lot of courses about construction during the first three years and I think that"s enough...»
- Please review my answer to Q.13»
- The heat and misture is not a good course for Structural Engineers. And should not be mandatory»
- heat and moisture engineering.»
- I think the course of FEM seemed to be a bit irrelevant, but I can not say that for sure since it might be useful for the students of the other brunch. (i.e. I follow the Building Performance Design branch)»
- Although I belive that the HAM-engineering course is a relevant subject it is not an appropriate course as it is given now which showed by the ammount of knowledge gained compared to the time required to do detective work to understand the theory the teachers refused to describe or explain.»
- many topics in the heat and moisture course were so much in deep .»
- Material Performance and Heat and Moisture were to closely related.»
- if your only interested in one or the other of the two "main lines" in the programme one could maybe think it was unnecessary to read two courses from one or the other "main line".»
- Material performance.»
- the heat and moisture course, if basic courses in building physics have been given before (which is the case for almost all students when they have studied about 3 years)»
- Material Performance, Heat and Moisture Engineering. At least they could have been compressed into one course.»
- The course Building Material was on too detailed level to suit the structural part. A more practical knowledge about material choices should be more appropriate at this level. Detailed building material course should be included in only Building Performance Design part of the program.»
- Heat and moisture!!!»
- except Heat and Moisture Engineering»

- Foreign students very far behind in materials and building physics» (Not at all)
- Because the courses were nor relevant to the following courses.» (Small extent)
» (Small extent)
- I think the first semester is a result of students from other countires, and its very sad for chalmers students.» (Some extent)
(Some extent)

- I do know if there was a target of the programme to do such a thing but it didnt seem to be in its targets. To say the truth the students in this programme do not seem to have great social feelings. I have followed courses from the master programme Design for Sustainable Development and the students there, both international and swedes, are much friendlier and sociable.» (Some extent)

- Very hard to find courses within other programs and to find out if they are suitable or not. In the Building Performance Design part you need extra courses and some from other departments are appropriate, but they are hard to find. Also, when searching for courses it should be possible to search by category (not master program name) as Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering etc. Sometimes it is not obvious from the master program name what type of engineering it belong to.» (Poor)
- Within the programme good. But since there are not enough courses in Building Performance, the information about other suitible courses was poor.» (Rather poor)
- In general VERY bad info about course elections and such» (Rather poor)
- There should be better info about how to apply to courses that are not within the master"s programme. There should also be information about who to consult concerning what courses could be relevant for the degree.» (Rather poor)
- More information about the ability to choose courses not recommended by the program. Like more encouragment to choose courses regarding leadership - we have a high education and many of us will in the future operate as leader in some way. Communication skills will be invaluable. » (Rather poor)
- The information on how Erasmus students that change over to "real" master students shall select courses was quite confused, but I guess it´,s normal since the rules changed only 2 years ago. Students though should exactly know whom to ask about such things.» (OK)
- Very good from the structural department. As always a bit confusing from the Building performance team.» (Good)
- ---» (Good)
- The FEM caurses, timber and concrete caurse is exelent. The other courses are most repitition.» (Good)

19. Do you miss some elective courses or topics that you think should be included in the programme? (Please specify)

- No»
- the program should be able to suggest courses for the building performance branch so it is full time studies. »
- Bridge Engineering»
- Earth quake engineering and a good practical course on the use of FEM programs»
- Advanced Bridge Engineering Advanced Concrete Structures Plastic Analysis of Structures Fatigue Design Advanced material Mechanics. ..... »
- bridge engineering»
- Energy on more societal level, environmental issues»
- I would have liked to have a more practical course in Building Physics. Where you understand the subject on a deeper and more concrete level.»
- nothing»
- The students of this programme must be allowed to take courses in international project managment and also in constructiuon project management as civil and structures engineers are good project mangers also and this is of utmost importance»
- i wanted too learn constrution courses. there was really no election possibilities. could have been more courses to choose from.»
- it was only one elective course in the 4th period»
- Continuum mechanics»
- It would be good if more elective courses in the field of structural engineering are available. Like bridge engineering and composite structures.»
- More courses on the structural engineering track, more co-work with applied mechanics. (would be better if we worked together with them instead of Building Performance)»
- Bridges and offshore/coastal structures»
- bridge engineering, commercial software used by consultant companies»
- Maybe again more knowledge and practice in how to model structures. In group of maximum two students. More analysis, both create and check results.»
- In the branch of Building Performance Design there was a lack of elective courses in comparison to Structural Eng. one. There has been a removal of some elective courses from last year showing the lack on this field. Furthermore, from my point of view there should be more than 2 elective courses per quarter in order to have the possibility to chose among a variety of courses and fields of interest. I think the branch of Building Performance is a wide open field and cannot fit only in 2 courses per quarter.»
- A course in modelling and application of FEM. It could be in Abaqus or some other commonly used software.»
- Bridges design and their construction analysis»
- I would have liked a course in composite structures and/or bridge design.»
- Yes. Right now the compulsory and recommended courses are ALL technical. I think, and a lot of research show, that communication skill and the ability to work effectively in teams will be a vital ingredient to become a sucessful engineer. If Chalmers would like to graduate more successful engineers, have at least one course like that either compulsory or strongly recommended! I red a course called "Uppskattande ledarskap" as for example which I strongly recommend. »
- 3D modelling»
- In general, more courses are needed in the part Building Performance Design. To fulfill the units needed for the program you need to take courses about quite different subjects. This means to little specialization in this part of the program.»
- no»

- Not easy, almost as u said dint do it.» (Poor)

- I was trying for next semester, but the answer from the teacher takes very long. However I think it will be ok in the end.» (OK)
- It will be nice to give several possible related information of our programm» (OK)
- We had courses in computational mechanics that were common with the mechanical engineering program. They generally worked very well, but I think the structural dynamics course could be tailored to be more useful for us as structural engineers.» (OK)
- The selection is OK, but it is hard to find available and suitable courses.» (OK)
- good but the problem is that the related departments like applied mechanics and structural engineering have intersections in time schedule.» (Good)
- I have selected three courses that is included in the MP Sustainable energy systems. I think they are better than construction since I will/want to work with energy efficient solutions for buildings. I may be importent to have knowledge aboute the entire energy system to be able to choose the best alternative.» (Good)
(Good)
- I got 4 elective courses (2 of them extra - just to gain knowledge on this field) from the master of Design for Sustainable Development since I was always attracted by architecture and the combination of it and building engineering. It is very important to involve these two fields and here in Chalmers I think this is one of its best advantages.» (Very good)

- Poor, to many examinations to early in exam-periods., and in my case, at the same day in period 3. That should not happend in this level of education. Sound and vibr and timber eng, Program information was ok! Good. But again, how could it happend that two courses in the same master programme are examin on the same day ? and in monday in exam week ? » (Poor)
- It was hard to find information about courses and the master thesis» (Rather poor)
- NO web info site» (Rather poor)
- In my opinion, the program should have their own web page with all extra information, where all registered students have access with they Chalmer"s login ID. There should also be a mail list for the department so all registered students do get important information, which unfortunately is not the case. Students taking courses in the department but belonging to other departments should then be able to choose if they want to be on the mail list or not.» (Rather poor)
(OK)
- In the structural engineering courses the information is very good. In the performance part the information has been very bad.» (OK)
- The problem as every body knows is the exams dates .. more than one occasion that we had to do two courses exams during very short period (half day only)..otherwise the administration was really good» (OK)
- The administration has been good, with one exception. Anders Lindvall"s course was really bad. He wasn"t capable of handle the course.» (Good)

- I expected more related courses not such a basic courses » (Small extent)
- I lost a lot of the trust in the program during the autumn because of MP and H&M.» (Small extent)
- There are too much repetition in the courses about building materials, building physics and HVAC. About 40% of the time is spent on subjects that the swedish students already know.» (Small extent)
- An extra semester to call it a master"s degree without really planning the courses that are added. » (Small extent)
- Too many courses had unacceptably quality regarding teaching, reading material and context. Knowledge from several courses is hard to recollect later in life when needed, since there are no books or any organized reading material with table of contents and index. Also, the overall ambition level of the department is too low in my opinion.» (Small extent)
- When I started I was thinking to study only Building performance design. However, through the courses (mainly because how they were presented) I got more interested in Structural Engineering. So from how I thought from the beginning the programme has met my expectations to a very small extent. But since I did not expect to like the Structural engineering the programme has met my expectations with a great extent!» (Some extent)
(Some extent)

- Would be great with more examples from reality where you have to form the problem your self. I think this will be the greatest challange when working as professional engineer. It would also be great to see the picture of what you do in front of you. It easily become very theoretical. It could be for example to show a real model of a house we are about to design. Show also models of different typical connections and so on to make it more near reality and not too theoretical » (Some extent)

- I don not learn as much in English as I would have done in Swedish.» (Bad)
- Easy for missunderstandings and more bigger explainations» (Bad)
- I know i "loose" much of the information, and must focusing on the language instead of the subject....» (Bad)
- One miss a lot of small details when it is in english + the tempo is lower » (Bad)
(Bad)
- The teachers are pretty bad at english. The language works much better at Sustainable energy systems where the teacher"s english is better.» (Bad)
- Some teachers need to practice their english skills considerably. There might be a risk for problems when you come into a working situation and don"t know the swedish word for something in the future.» (Rather bad)
(Rather bad)
- In some of the compulsory courses in quarter 1 and 2 there was very bad literature. Some were even not translated to english. I think it is very important to have the course material complete before starting a course. » (Rather bad)
- It"s ok, but it would be preferable to have some of the courses also in Swedish. Too much important information might get lost. But maybe it´,s just my opinion on the language development in general.» (OK)
- The language skills varies a lot between teachers.» (OK)
- Most of teachers could be understanded well. However, I really need to common it that some of teachers could speak aloudly and some of teachers should speak slow down.» (OK)
- maybee missing some words in my native language that is needed for my professional carrier. Have to learn words again.» (OK)
- Some teachers need to change their materials from Swedish to English.» (OK)
- as a non swedish» (Good)
(Good)
- The only thing I see is bad is not knowing some technical terms in Swedish.» (Good)
- it varies pretty much from teacher too teacher. but I like the fact that it is in english and have no problem caused by the language» (Good)
- It is very good and most of the time it works very well.» (Very good)
- I think it is very good. It opens up the borders both for studying and for working.» (Very good)
- It prepares me better for work and communicate in an international work environment.» (Very good)
- Some course leaders (e.g. Björn Engström) are good at telling the swedish expressions as well. Others never bother and after a while people no longer ask.» (Very good)
- I think all lecturers speak very good english and the language was never a problem to me» (Very good)

27. What should definitely be preserved in your master"s programme?

- The general structure is good and introducing FEM in steel, concrete and timber courses is good. The emphasis on understanding basic concepts in engineering like the difference between elastic and plastic and linear and non-linear is good.»
- Cooperation with applied mechanics department»
- Björn Engström»
- The material subjects»
- Structural systems, Steel, Timber and concrete.»
- The project in structural systems»
- The good courses, especially concrete and steel courses.»
- I think most of the things. The Structural engineering part is very good organized, and I had a positive opinion about all the teachers.»
- The important courses»
- steel timber cocnrete and FEM courses»
- even more courses like the timber, concrete and steel courses. »
- Education in English. Great teachers! Open communication.»
- Fem basics course»
- Kurser från Tillämpad mekanik.»
- the dugga during each quarter which give me force to understanding more»
- Teamwork spirit of the design tasks is a good opportunity for students to practice working as a member and/or leader of the design team. the labs and study visits are very good learning tools that in my opinion should be kept. the courses material and workload are more or less adequate and reasonable and should be preserved.»
- The welcome spirit of the teachers towards the students.»
- Coordination provided by the structural engineering department.»
- The courses: Structural Systems and Finite Element method(basics). Quite good courses in many aspects, even though improvements are always possible »

28. What should definitely be changed in your master"s programme?

- The FEM teaching should be revised, the gap between the basic theory in the FEM Basics course and then applying Abaqus in projects is too big. Use the FEM applications course to bridge that gap.»
- Mandatory courses in addition to too many basic courses like heat and moisture engineering, structural systems, material performance, geotechnics and so on. Furthermore, theoretical courses should be increased. »
- Material performance,Heat and moisture»
- the first semester in year one»
- Material performance, Heat & Moisture»
- Heat and moisture engineering»
- FEM basics only mandatory for structural engineers. A big restructuring in the course Heat and Moisture»
- There should be another way of doing the FEM analyses.»
- Some work has to be done on the Building Performance part. »
- nothing»
- mandatory Building performance design courses»
- less of the other ones, which didnt feel like it gave me that much.»
- Reconsideration of the courses Material Performance and Heat and Moisture.»
- Create a clear web environment for the master"s programme! Clear up the course litteratures - messy!»
- heat and moisture course»
- language»
- Bättre engelskakunskaper hos föreläsarna.»
- teaching method , nearly 50% fail in building physics! is it really all fault of students?»
- It would be good if more selective courses are available in the field of structural engineering.»
- Better information about the elective courses from a view of future career plans.(e.g the difference between what a future practicing structural engineer and a phD student should choose)»
- The variety of the elective courses. »
- The compulsory course HAM-engineering.»
- Add comunication/leadership courses in all civil engineering programs, we will all be leaders in some way. »
- The choice of mandatory courses»
- Higher ambition level in general and more strict requirements for choice of teachers. The two courses: Building materials and Heat and moisture engineering were of extremely bad quality and should be changed dramatically or even reorganized entirely»
- Heat and Moisture!!!!!!!»
