5. To what extent do you think you would have taken the opportunity to make use of the following material if they were offered to you when you first was accepted to MPAEM?

Matrisfråga

- I have about the same background as the mechanical engineers, so I have used Callister a lot before, however I think it is a very good book and recommended for those who haven"t used it before.»
- Already have Callister.»
- I answered negatively to all choices since I have a material science background, but I think for the students who are not very well familiar with some material science concepts, the above options could be helpful.»
- Borrowed Callister but most of it I already knew. Wikipedia was of greater help. »
- I would not have bought Callister since that book was used in the material science courses given during the bachelor years. However I want to add that Callister is an excellent book and I would definately buy it if I had not allready bought it!!»
- I"m not sure when I would have had time to do these things, but Callister has for sure been very helpful this year.»
- Callister is realy important for basic knowlege for the engineering metall course»
- As a student not from Chalmers my matlab is not as good as students from Chalmers. »

6. Do you have any other suggestions of activities that you would have appreciated as a new student at MPAEM?

- Being more practical rather than solid study materials.»
- I would want to have more exposure to the kind of research that happens in the department so that i would develop an interest in a field of my choice and hence choose courses in accordance.»
- Study visits to companies that use material technology, so we can see how a future workplace might look like, advertisement, it is always nice to see that one has chosen the right masterprogramme. »
- Guest lecture with a person working within material science.»
- YES IF WE HAVE MATLAB IN OUR SCHADUAL IT WILL HELP US »
- The "crashcourse" about the matrial basics was good. »
- The foreign students should get some compendium on how to write reports and make presentations. A very common issue is copying text straight from the internet.»
- Some time to get to know all the other students in the new class. Many other master programs went on a small trip together or did some other activity»
- introduction of how to apply/choose a master thesis»
- I would have liked the teams in the first courses to have been decided in advance and not be choosen by the students themselves. Worked very well in the first quarter of the bachelor.»
- more company tours»
- Please inform student not from Sweden about plagiarism, they have not understood the seriousness in making a plagiarism. As a fellow student I have to explain it is not acceptable to "copy and paste". The answer was "this is just a small report I did not think it was so important".»
- I would appreciate if some real-life projects would be introduced into some courses, e.g.: build a hand-made fiber-epoxy boat body in composite course.»

7. Do you have any good ideas for activities during the introduction week? (Experiments, games..)

When the students arrive, the first week will be an introduction in order to for the students to reach similar basic knowledge and get to know eachother.

- To design and make something very simple to get to know a process from beginning to the end.»
- Some type of games or short, easy and fun group work would be nice.»
- I think our introduction was perfect. I found most of my group mates for the future group works in that day and from the Egg dropping competition»
- Volleyball (could be optional), something relaxing that hasn"t too much to do with the studies.»
- A dinner at a nice restaurant.»
- For us as the 2007 entries, there was an "egg saving competition" which was a nice and memorable start to get familiar with other students. Moreover, I think adding 2 or at least one more occasion like that for students, sometime in the middle or end of the program, with the aim to enhance social interactions and friendly chats will be welcomed. Another way to help is by managing a group competition between students in the area of material science, selection and design in the second year, when students have obtained some knowledge and passed the basic courses. Beside the educational purposes, things like this make the program more exciting, dynamic and fascinating.»
- An after work just to get to know each other could be nice. The important thing is to inform on beforehand on what schedule to expect. I was very frustrated that I didnt know that the introduction would take all day and that it was during lunch aswell. This since I had a lunchmeeting booked. »
- Presentation of the institution, areas of expertise, research going on, staff etc. Also introductory lectures from companies that might be of interest would be good. (When I think about it, this would be good even after the introduction, CHARM is good but I would appreciate guest lectures outside the courses from interesting material related companies for material students).»
- quite good as it was »
- CIRC is usually doing a city tour with some games for the international students. It"s usually very fun and a nice way to get to know people. I think it would be great if some of the Chalmers students that are starting the same masters program were encouraged to participate as phadders.»
- Some after the school hours activity to get to know your new classmates. Like bowling or a picknick with some Swedish Brännboll.»
- yes, we need more fun and games and going out with other students also previous year students to reduce stresses and make friends.»
- dinner party, make a contact list of students in the same program.»
- no»

- Powder Metallurgy,Course on basics of Matlab,JMat Pro and Thermocalc and tools we would be using.» (?)
- more about industrial use of different materials, e.g. learn more about swedish steel standards etc.» (?)
- Structural Design, FEM, Project» (Yes)
- Nanotechnology for sustainable energy» (Yes)
- Practical metallurgy, i.e. sample prep., microscopy, testing etc.» (Yes)
- MATLAB» (Yes)
- materials recycling and its enviromental impact» (Yes)
- Manufacturing from a material point of view. Computersimulations related to materials. Metal courses on a higher level (the step taken between the courses in the bachelor program (mech) and the master is not that large).» (Yes)
- there are some courses in manifacturing technology in which we need a background knowledge about MATLAB, FEM , Virtual similation software etc. Those we dont have in our background and to learn them now we dont have a clear idea and some of them are in swedish language. So just look at this.» (Yes)
- math» (Yes)
- Projektledning» (Yes)
- In my opinion the courses cover almost all the important areas that material engineer should know and the subjects are treated although brief but almost complete in each course.I think it should be gave more attention to the applicability of the materials in some courses rather than theoretical issues.another point is this maybe student don’,t have the opportunity to take all the courses which he/she is interested in them because of Thesis even it is 30 or 60 credits.» (No)
- I think the program has a well-defined and structured frame of materials science at master level. At the same time, it consists of several supplementary elective courses and options that make this frame flexible enough for the student to take the choices of interest and follow the favorite track.» (No)
- I think Tailored Materials was the most interesting course so far, but many people did not take it because it was a bit unclear what it was about when just reading the description.» (No)
- Most can be read in your own elective courses.» (No)

13. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

No»15 53%

Genomsnitt: 2.64

- In fact I would like to see the specializations in 3 major group: Metals, Ceramics and Polymers» (Yes (1 to 2))
- Polymer materials. Tailored material should be presnted in more than one course.e.g new course in the field of nanomaterials is necessary. or elective course with give introduction in matlab since as I know many of the students do not know it (specily ones with material bachground not mechnics)and it is applicable in many courses fatigue design, welding and composites. » (Yes (1 to 2))
- Material selection and design, the subject is perfect, I would like to have more than one course on this subject, but the course we actually had contained way too little, just self evident logic and facts, there must be a way to improve that course!» (Yes (1 to 2))
- Engineering metals was too basic.» (Yes (1 to 2))
- The lightweight design course is on a far to low level, already covered in earlier courses. » (Yes (1 to 2))
- In general I feel like there is not that much "new" things for those coming from chalmers mech. I do understand that this is due to the other possible backgrounds that students have. Perhaps the prerequsites for the program should be set higher so the program can start on a higher level. I would also like to add that I don"t think that the course material selection and design is in need of any heavy redesign, if anything the project could be extended a bit with higer demands and aims (some projects this year were almost copies of case studies in the book, if you make such a project and than complain about a low workload perhaps you should blaim yourself a bit).» (Yes (1 to 2))
- I think the idea of Materials Selection and Design was good, but the realization was really bad - unfocused, to few lectures and you could pass the exam without having opened the book once. All the other courses have been good except for some minor issues.» (Yes (1 to 2))
- Högre nivå på kurserna från start» (Yes (1 to 2))

- I think it depends a lot on the teacher, but I think most are listening and trying to improve things if there is a problem.» (To some extent)
- i"ve no idea about this» (To some extent)
- I have read some of the protocols from the evaluations and sometimes it feels like the examiner just tries to defend the course and the way they are today. Make sure that the evaluations are always made and discussed in a constructive way and try to see possibilities instead of critique. This said I think the evaluations are good and necessary.» (Could be improved)
- i guess so but i need to attend the course again to find out» (No opinion)

- I would like to see the lectures climate more hectic and competitive. There should be a difference between the one who studies hard and the one who doesn"t. Final scale of 1 to 5 can respond the students endeavor. » (Good)
- Most of the courses was excellent for me .I think ones I had some background in them was perfect because I just learned some new things and go deeper in some fileds and ones I had not background in them expand my knowledge in new areas. The 60 credits project work improve my ability to work more experimentally which I had not done before. » (Good)
- I"am happy with my choice and i think the programme have forefilled my thoughts» (Very good)

17. What should definitely be preserved in your Master programme?

- Workload»
- The project based learning»
- I think it is good know.»
- A lot of optional courses, some of the lecturers are really good too.»
- The broad approach. All material groups are present.»
- The order of courses, like Engineering Metals then ceramics and polymers. »
- group study/project, written report and oral presentation, lab sessions»
- Most things should be kept the way they are»
- all courses were good...especially good to take the Engineering Ceramics course at IVF since it has close connection to the industry»
- The mix of people. Obviously it"s not up to you to decide who will apply for the program, but I think we"ve become more of a class because we are people from "a bit of everywhere" and there were not so many pre-formed groups.»
- no homework in the course»
- the way of teaching and program structure»

18. What should definitely be changed and improved in your Master programme?

- Some compulsory courses as well as class climate»
- There should be a bridge between the research associated with the dept and the students as its a Masters level program.»
- Teacher should tell exact workload in course and deadlines at start of course. Slides should be online approximately 12-24h before actual lecture. Uploaded files on the studentportal should have lecture number and lecture date. Old files from other terms should be classified as old/archived for ease to see what info is new and important. Much better info about when upcomming events are for choosing new courses for the next period and what courses are recommended for you to take according to the program.»
- maybe visting companies should be extend. Giving the students the possibility to work more with laboratory facilities themselves during or after labs. Giving the students the possibility to corporate with professors on doing researches during their study not just in Master thesis. »
- Material Selection and Design must be revised.»
- Higher level => deeper knowledge (hopefully)»
- There should be more visits to companies working with materials during the courses. »
- more seminars, more discussion with classmates from different backgrounds»
- The courses in the second quarter of the second year are not good (at least if you have already taken Materials for light weight constructions as most chalmers mech students have). There should be more courses that build on previous courses. There seems to be a bit to many courses that focus on very narrow subjects (materials in medicine, materials in superconductors and so on) and very few advanced courses on "core" subjects.»
- nothing really»
- Materials Selection and Design»
- the order of courses.for example failure analysis is a tough one for one who just starts.»
- more labs, more company visits»
- I think engineering metals and material selection and design are both ineresting courses but i think the preformance of the courses should be discussed.»
- The course in ceramics, the staff of IVF is very kind and friendly but they do not have the same standard as the lecture at Chalmers. They made many silly mistakes, talking to the board instead to the students, talking extremely quiet almost like a whisper, and always making the excuse we where not prepared to have so many students.»
