Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states:

The Master Programme in Production Engineering offers an education for future industrial experts. There is great need for production engineering skill in Sweden and internationally. Global market competition has again made production engineering expertise into a core asset. Future production engineers will have a wide spectrum of choices within a company. Skills needed include management as well as virtual reality tools and manufacturing technologies.

Production Engineering gives an internationally competitive education. The programme provides a broad range of topics ranging from production system simulation, to manufacturing tools and production management. The three specialist tracks enable in-depth education and projects. They prepare you for an industrial career or an academic research position. Also, a number of elective courses provide a wide spectrum of choices.

As a leading Swedish university in Production Engineering research and education, Chalmers provides a leading Master programme through combined efforts from four Chalmers departments. Production-based industries are highly concentrated in the west of Sweden and industry is extensively involved in the master programme.

Programme plan

The first two quarters provide all students with a common knowledge platform amounting to 30 higher education credits (HEC). The platform covers a broad field of production engineering, introducing three forthcoming specialisation tracks:

- Production Systems

- Manufacturing Technology

- Production Management

Production systems
The Production Systems track will give you mabilities for production system development and reengineering. You will be able to increase precision and speed in industrial development of productive systems using advanced production development tools. Within the production system track you will acquire:

- knowledge in design, implementation, and operation of advanced production systems, including skills in robotics, automation, and human factors

- understanding of industrial processes for production system improvement

- knowledge of methods, and tools to manage complexity and control of advanced production systems.

- skills in using computer-based, virtual tools (e.g. simulation and visualisation tools) for development and operation of production systems.

Manufacturing Technology
The Manufacturing Technology Track focuses on the machine tool and work piece material, both in reality and virtual reality. With in-depth knowledge of core manufacturing processes and methods in early process planning, successful concurrent engineering in a modern product development chain is assured. By controlling the properties of the manufacturing process, early product design changes may be triggered and quality aspects confirmed. Furthermore, process forces and velocities will become visible, which is vital information when selecting machines and optimising cycle times.

After finishing the Manufacturing Technology Track the Master of Science you will have knowledge of material behaviour in manufacturing, methods of material- and process selection, machine tool control and kinetic manufacturing simulation.

You will also:

- be an invaluable team worker/project leader as a production process expert in any situation of interdisciplinary physical product development.

- be an expert in manufacturing process control and optimisation, often with the purpose to improve production economics and efficiency.

- have considerable knowledge in various simulation techniques and simulation mathematics, which makes the Master of Science interesting for all kinds of assignments in different disciplines.

Production management
The mission of the management track is to provide students with integrated skills in production engineering and management, specialized in design and improvement of competitive manufacturing systems, well prepared to seize a career as production manager.

You will be able to leverage your knowledge and skills in management and control of the production environment and in areas related to production system design and improvement. You will master different methods used to approach and analyze production management problems and possess an ability to cooperate with people specialized in manufacturing engineering, automation, etc.

The four basic learning objectives are:

- understand and analyze how manufacturing interplay with economic, organizational and business issues of the firm, and be able to formulate an operational manufacturing strategy.

- understand relations between customer orders and demand and the resulting shop orders, via the process of manufacturing planning and control

- master modern reengineering and improvement tools in manufacturing, and methods used in analyzing performance of the manufacturing system.

- understand modern production technologies and philosophies and, based on this, formulate and solve operational and strategic problems in design, operation and improvement of manufacturing systems.
