1. "Building physics advanced" is an elective course in the programme MPSTR. Why did you choose it? What has motivated your choice?

- I have taken similar couse at my home-university. It was pretty interesting. I wanted to hear more about the topic and different point of view as well.»
- Due to the focus on building physics.»
- Interested in Building Physics and Building Perfomance Design. A carrier as consultant in building physics or building services engineering demand knowledge and understanding of the more advanced principles in this field.»
- I choose the cousre because I would like to gain more practical knowledge within this area. The things motivate me are the advanced building tech & theory in Europe and also the rapid development of energy conservation builing in my home country.»
- in my "program" and a subject i like to know..»
- I chose it since I thought it was more relevant to my education than my compulsory courses at Bi.»
- I wanna try if I like the other branch except structural engineering, even if I donot like this branch I also know the basic knowledge of building physics. And I failed on heat and moisture, I want to learn more during the class. »
- to know the aspects given in the course :heat moisture humidity ventilation behaviour of a building solar radiation...»
- First the basic course vas good and i hoped that the continuation would also bee good. Second it was what matched the timber eng. schedule best.»
- I was interested in the subject, especially with energy efficiency.»
- Before this course I was very interested in Building Physics and wanted to study it on an advanced level. I was hoping that the course would have given a good base for specialization in building physics.»
- I am interested in Building Physics,»
- I wanted to know more about building physics because I didnt think I knew enough after my studies at byggprogrammet.»
- Interested in energy consumption for buildings.»
- it was to improve my knowledges in thermal physics in a building»
- design efficient buildings interests me. I would like to assist people in the design of their house, or in their rehabilitation»
- In my undergraduate study I have studied mostly structural design and other aspect of building design was not covered well and I was interested to know how building are designed to give thermal comfort for the dwellers both in hot and cold climates »

2. Based on what was delivered in the course by the teacher(s), do you think that the following text is the right description of the course objectives?

The three-ties design approach for sustainable buildings consists of three levels: basic building design, passive systems, mechanical systems (figure was shown in the beginning of the course). The "passive" behaviour of a building is in focus in terms of passive heat and moisture storage in a building envelope (basic building design, use of natural ventilation, use of free heat gains from solar radiation (passive systems), etc., all in order to minimise the need for energy (mechanical systems).

- Transient calculation methods were presented during the lectures.» (Yes, to great extent)
- Will be great to have more practical examples from the industry. And would like to have more oppurtunities to do exercise together with the teacher deeply.» (To some extent)
- There has not even been a proper division between basic building design, passive systems, mechanical systems during the lectures. » (Not at all)
- We were never told the course objectives. It would have been useful to get a course program. During the course we have not treated the content in a good way. At the lectures the teacher has only written things on the board and we have copied. No real introduction to the matter was given, she just started writing formulas and that was it. Sometimes I think she tried to make an introduction to the subject, but this was lost. Often because she focus on the wrong thing. When she is drawing on the board she can for example draw a window and tell us load and clear that it is a window. Than in order for us not to miss it, she will even write "window" on the board. After however, when the introduction and solution to the problem is supposed to be given, she turns her head towards the board and says something unhearable. » (Not at all)

3. How did the outcome of the course (what you actually got from the lectures) meet your expectations of the course at the time when you selected it?

In line with my expectations»14 70%
Less than I expected»3 15%

- I learnt a lot» (In line with my expectations)
- I learned a lot but it was more difficult than what I expected.» (In line with my expectations)
- I think we saw lots of things really interessanting, But all is not so clear in my mind, so I am able to use less than we saw in class» (In line with my expectations)
- I thought that there will be more practical exercise than what we got. It will be a great help for us to understand when, how and where we could apply the knowledge learned during class to the real situation» (Less than I expected)
- What was written on the board was basically: -A drawing of a building -A chimney -Another drawing of a building -A higher chimney What the point of these drawings were got lost, since it"s quite difficult to hear and write and draw at the same time.» (Far below my expectations)
- I was hoping for specialization in building physics, and understanding the matter on a deeper level. Instead I found myself just sitting copying formulas from the board without understanding what and why we were doing this.» (Far below my expectations)

4. The teacher noticed that the lectures and all moments of the course were well attended. Why did you attend them?

- Hard to study on your own since much of the litterature is only equations. Don"t know what"s important etc.» (Only becasue they were helpful for my learning)
- I always attend Angles lecture, but not the guest lectures. » (Only becasue they were helpful for my learning)
- The course book is not very good, and no course plan was given, so the only way to follow the course was to go there and copy from the board, without fully understanding the subject. So no, it was not helpful for my learning, but the only way to find out what the course was about.» (Only becasue they were helpful for my learning)
- And also they will be helpful for my learning. it is always better to have the lecture to introduce than just read the book.» (I simply always attend the lectures)
- If I would have skipped a lecture it would have been hard to catch up again, high pace.» (I simply always attend the lectures)
- I hoped that "maybe today I"ll get something out of it" Since it"s quite normal that the teachers will later tell you that "No, I already explained that during that and that lecture" or at the exam there will be a question that relies on attendance from ONE lecture (which was the case). » (I simply always attend the lectures)

5. How did the structure of the course work for you?

First half of the course (weeks 1-4): new theories and models, (new) assignments, new computer programme.
Throughout the whole course (weeks 1-7): applications and illustrations through assignments, guest lectures, visist to SP and workshop with achitects.
Throughout the whole course, but at random occasions: calculations excercises. (An alternative is to have 2 hours teaching + 2 hours calculation exercises)

- There was no calculations.. and only a few bad organized examples» (I didn"t like that, bacause...)
- it"s difficult to make links between theory and application. For example at the begining, there was equations and equations, I didn"t understand for what they was used. After we began application but without have understood the new theory... I thinks it"s better to do step by step, theory - application. For the application, not only to comment some curbs, but what is the design procedure also ! I think that it was the lack : some design procedure.» (I didn"t like that, bacause...)
- I never really got an idea of what we were doing, what "chapter" we were on.» (It didn"t work at all for me, because...)
- I did not see a structure. The teacher was only writing at the board and we were copying. We did not do any exercises (that are quite important in building physics), sometimes the teacher started one but suddenly stopped and no solution was given.» (It didn"t work at all for me, because...)

- I did them all. But that did not help. It is better if the problems could have been solved in class. I also think that the teacher was wrong in giving us calculation problems at the exam, since calculation problems were not treated during the course.» (Yes, to great extent)
- Lack of time during the course, time consuming excercises.» (To some extent)
- I probably did most of them. The solutions were poor, most of them had errors. » (To some extent)
- I dont have enough time to do so. But I tried. It will be better if it could be published a little faster, sometimes even before the class. » (To some extent)
- I suggest you tell us when to do these exercises because it would help us in our planning. The solutions were difficult to follow and some had some major faults witch did not help us in the learning process.» (To some extent)

- Why would I not participate? It came at a shock at the exam that I could not take all bonus credits into account.» (Both)
- Copying values from an excel file is not contributing to anything, not even my excel skills. Why did"nt we do calculation problems instead? And perhaps also used HEAT2 and compared results?» (Both)
- Mostly because they gave bonus credits. But I found assignment 1 interesting, assignment 2 very interesting and assignment 3 unnecessary. But I think it should have been made clear that to obtain a grade 3 you could only profit from one assignment.» (Both)

18. Are you motivated to use the knowledge from this course later?

The contents of lectures, assignements, guest lectures and compulsory moments had the same goal from the teachers"s perspective - to help the students in implementing the knowledge (goals) achieved in the course in the future - in other courses, engineering practice etc. Are the teacher"s expectations realistic?

- There is very lttle knowledge gained from this course, just as you predicted during the first lecture. » (To small extent)
- I think the teacher is not very realistic in her perspective of the course. Maybe through discussions and really working with the subject I could have got a good knowledge. But this is not the case. What I will bring with me is the experience from working with the architects and the assignment 2. Unfortunately the rest got lost there at the board. The teacher has shown us a lot of times that the knowledge from this course gets lost and students do not bring it with them. I do not find this strange, instead of asking why the students refuse to use the new knowledge, maybe the teacher should ask herself what she does wrong. Maybe the knowledge is not transmitted to the students?» (To small extent)

- The exam had nothing to do with what we have done during the course. It was far to difficult and the time was not enough. I could recognize a few things in the questions at the exam, but it was to many parameters so the questions just became messy. Also considering that we did not calculate anything during classes maybe the exam should not have been exercises? I do not think that a teacher should lie about the exam requirements. She has got to respect that we have a life outside Chalmers and maybe need to work during the summer holiday. So I should be able to plan my time for myself. I came prepared to the exam but it was no way to pass it, and this is not fair at all.» (No, not at all)

- Lack of time on the final exam. Tasks were all somewhat tricky with some parts that we did not practice before. Particularly the third task on the exam.» (To some extent)
- Seems to be a little bit difficult to me, and actually to some of the classmates also. Home exams could be better compare with the ordinary one as the home exam is more likely to solve a real problem or working on a real project» (To some extent)
- it will be better to allow taking lecture notes. I did a great effort on my lectures, and tried to make notes to help me understand. » (To some extent)

- I do not think that a course on advanced level should include a teacher talking to herself at the board and a classroom of students just sitting there trying to copy what is said and written. » (Poor)
- not so clear, slightly messy, in the idea that we don"t see really wich factor affects what...» (Fair)

- Never under no circumstances select a course from the department of building physics again.» (Very small)
- The remaining value is me changing specialization. I have lost interest in the building performance at Chalmers after "Material performance", "Heat and moisture engineering" and "Building Physics".» (Very small)
- the course is spot on to my interests» (Very high)

- better solutions for excercises, an exam in line with the level of the excercises»
- less guest lecture in my opinion.»
- You should present calculation excersises. Teacher not lying about examination requirements. Not waste our time with stupid assignments that give no further understanding for the subject.»
- I think the course has to be completely changed. And it would be good if also the teacher was substituted. She has a very good knowledge but has got difficulties to teach. The course book. Hard to follow. »
- more calculation exercises and more exercises to know if you can pass the test or not.»
- the exam was very difficult and long»
- If there is course compendium which containes solved excersises and arranged chapter by chapter it will be very good. »

34. Additional comments

- Angela is a very pleasant teacher :)»
- When it comes to the exam, it is possible to take the lecture notes. Because in a relevent short time 4hours compared to 8hours for home exam, and not allow to check any relevent materials. »
- 1) The teacher lackes understanding for units and parameters. At least it is confusing when when formulas are used that do not fulfill units balance (this mistakes were made both during the exam and the solutions on other problems) 2. The course litterature is not well written. It is difficult to understand with the help of self study. 3. The lectures were not informative, difficult to understand what the sibject was. Jumping from one thing to another. Never finishing examples. 4. Exam was cruel. It is malicious to say that a certain thing is what is expected to know and then have an exam on completely other things. The HOME EXAM from the previous year was far much easier than the written exam of this year. 5) PResentation technique poor. It"s not an art class. If you draw a window on the black board, i want to be able to write something about that window. It"s not sufficient to orally explain what the purpose of the window is or whatever you"re trying to explain by drawing that window. WRITE TEXT on the black board. WHERE IS THE COURSE MEMO?!?!?!? »
- Another thing that has been difficult with this course is that the teacher lacks a good knowledge of units to parameters. Therefore a lot of exercises were difficult to make and took a lot of time trying to understand her errors. This is not good study material, we should not have to waste our time trying to understand errors (ok if it is once, but not all the time!!) »
