- I feel like I didn"t need them, but they were expensive! Either more should be demanded of the students (so we need to read the literature) or there should be no course literature more than the lecture notes (which are good)» (Small extent)
- I felt the notes are enough to get the important topics right, as I only had to consult the recommended books to clearify some details of certain topics.» (Large extent)
- Congratulations! Professor Göran, your lecture notes are excellent, clear, well presented, very respectful with the students, I really enjoyed the most reading them, and they are an example of the best ones. Suggestion: If it is possible to go deep inside in some topics given emphasize to more physical rather than mathematical aspects could be excellent, for example explain in more detail for the physical point of view the concepts of decoherence, source , I suggest you look at the Nature review : Superconducting quantum bits, 19 june 2008, really you would improve your lectures notes and course"s goal if you recommend it » (Great extent)

- Handouts were nice and useful, they helped to keep us fresh with the topics and sometimes to understand better the content of the lectures. Though I was not very satisfied with the handout sessions with the TA. I think he could have been better prepared for them, also it was hard to clear doubts because it seemed he had some problems in explaining himself to us. Can be improved...» (Rather well)

- all though it became quite loaded at the end, with 2 lab w/reports in the last 2 weeks, adding to the 2 labs we had in superconductivity course. So it was hard to make time to study during the previous days for the exam.» (Adequate)

Course-specific questions:

13. To what extent has the lab at Chalmers been of help for your learning?

- The teaching was quite good. The lab is a bit difficult to discuss since we did not see the experiment performed.» (Large extent)
- Nice laboration and well explained lab notes from Thilos part. Its nice that we saw basic qubit properties, but it could be even nicer if the lab is taken a step further to do more in depth manipulations with the qubit, or (an idea) maybe more convenient can be for example if the teachers can give us a set of references to read about the current state of the art implementations and computation with this type of qubits. Later there could be a small presentation day where students can give the other classmates a short summary of these articles, just to expand our knowledge about different qubit implementations. As it can mean more workload for the student the expectations for this sort of assignment can be set rather low in the sense that the professor shouldn´,t expect full understanding of the fundamentals of the article but just that the student can transmit the others a clear message with a nice ppt. It can become part of the "hand-in" grade.» (Large extent)
- Way to big report task, the biggest bad thing with the entire course!» (Great extent)
- Good laboration, should be fun to be able to perform some measurements by ourselves though» (Great extent)
- It was a great opportunity to be familiarize with superconductivity qubits.» (Great extent)
- Excellent, the idea to combine Thilo"s lab and theoretical material is excellent, the labs were wonderful, they gave to the course an special opportunity to learn doing a laboratory and the concepts are much better assumed rather than only blackboard lesson, really thank you very much for the labs, it is the best idea to learn this subjects» (Great extent)

14. To what extent has the lab in Lund been of help for your learning?

- It was nice seeing another kind of qubit but the period is not the best for it.» (Some extent)
- I appreciate this idea, It gave me understanding how another kind of qubit will work.» (Large extent)
- Helped to get a clearer understanding about the experimental implementation of quantum operations and how this sort of qubit gates are performed and interpreted.» (Large extent)
- Also very good laboration and fun to be able to perform measurements» (Great extent)
- Lund Laboration was unique, really people there were very kindly, this lab is excellent, maybe it is better for the coming years, revise very carefully the preparation for the lab, really the preparation material must be re-elaborate to get the main elements and to understand the lab, for example, try to explain much better all the physics involve in the process, and describe the procedure in a more sequential process» (Great extent)

- His lectures were quite nice. Good explanations, well prepared and very open to explain doubts from the students. It also served as a small recap from our previous knowledge of some topics.» (Large extent)
- He is an excellent teacher. His lecture bring more light into my understanding of superconducting qubit.» (Great extent)
- Jens Koch is an excellent professor, I really understood Cooper-pair box with him» (Great extent)

Summarizing questions

16. What is your general impression of the course?

Excellent»4 36%

- I was really pumped before the course. But then not much was demanded, the focus was not on understanding but on details. Also there were two things which influenced me negatively psychologically. 1) The amount of low-level questions which were "allowed" during lectures (especially by one person). That type of questions can be sorted out after class. More focus on getting on with the reasoning. 2) I bought the literature which turned out not to be needed. More should be demanded of the students.» (Fair)
- Some more time during the lectures could be dedicated to the process of measurement in quantum mechanics, how it is really performed and what characterizes a good measurement procedure. A point that sometimes is difficult to understand completely is the connection between the physical quantities described in the theory (e.g. dephasing time and relaxation time) and the numbers that are really found in the experiments (I am thinking particularly to the lecture on "Reading out a quantum qubit"). » (Good)
- I´,m well satisfied.» (Good)
- I found Quantum Informatics very interesting...» (Excellent)
- Professor Göran the course is excellent, but you must try to transmit it with more energy, more passion and strong attitude and more pedagogical, BUT PLEASE, DO NOT MISUNDERSTAND MY COMMENT, THE COURSE IS EXCELLENT, ONLY I WOULD LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE TO BE PERFECT!, I AM NOT ATTACKING YOU, I AM ONLY WRITE A POSITIVE CRITICISM » (Excellent)

17. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The ability to ask questions during class.»
- The lab in Lund was very helpful, the hand-in system is very good to understand the concepts»
- The laborations, both Thilos and the Lund lab were really good.»
- - The range of topics in the program (it could be useful to add a brief discussion about NMR, especially when the Bloch equations are introduced), - The labs.»
- The laborations»
- I think almost everything.»
- lund lab»
- keep it up !»
- The structure and the conception is excellent.THE LABORATION MUST BE EXTENDED! I THINK IS AN EXCELLENT COURSE, »
- The course teacher, the laborations, handouts, a guest lecturer if possible(of course one doesnt expect the same will come, but if there is a good researcher visiting its nice that he/she joins this initiative)»

18. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- CTH lab report size.»
- The exercice cessions are maybe not efficient enough.»
- The recitations should be more focused on problem solving rather than explaining the hand-in from previous week.»
- Adding some more content about quantum communication»
- nothing specially»
- Quantum algorithm»
- The TA for the handouts can improve his way of carrying the sessions, they felt very slow and hard to see a clear picture of what he wanted to explain us.»

19. Additional comments

- Very good course. I would recommend it to other students.»
- It would be good to have some additional preparatory material for the labs, especially that one at Chalmers. Some original research papers on similar experiments could be helpful.»
- Just thanks to Goran and Tilo for their such a good course. I enjoyed a lot.»
- The problem solving session should be make more interactive.»
- THANK YOU VERY MUCH PROFESSORS GÖRAN AND THILO, AS WELL PEOPLE IN LUND, I THINK THE COURSE MUST BE JOINT WITH THE ONE IN LUND AND CREATE A SUPERCOURSE IN QUANTUM INFORMATICS, AS WELL THE GROUPS, MAYBE CREATE A COLLABORATION, IT COULD BE VERY GOOD FOR THE SWEDISH SCIENCE »
- I like the way the teacher took the class and his way of explaining things(very didactive). Though I have a couple of comments that could be taken into consideration for the next time(if it applies). I appreciated the way the teacher approached doubts and questions from students, he always tried to re-explain a topic in better words to make sure the things were understood and took the time neede for this, the problem is that sometimes it felt too much especially with things that either the students "should" know previously or that sometimes felt not so relevant to the lecture itself. I know this makes the teacher good because he helps the students with doubts but there has to be some line drawn because this also affected the pace of some lectures and thus it can keep the teacher from going throughly with the course material and discussing details about relevant topics. Related to this and can be easily improved next time is that the teacher should not allow students to ask(too much) about course administration related issues during the lecture time. It is fine and understandable if the teacher has to give an announcement about rescheduling or lab details and along with this the corresponding doubts from students. But, in several lectures, students would interrupt the beginning of the lecture to ask about things relating handouts, labs, dates, etc (which in my opinion can be discussed during a break) and this lead to loosing valuable lecture time and sometimes some topics had to be skiped. To avoid these issues I can suggest that the teacher should make it clear to students that this sort of doubts can be adressed during breaks. Though in my opinion students should already be aware of this (so its not the teachers fault in the first place...) »
