About the course

3. The Home Exam

Each question is a statement, to which you may or may not agree.

Matrisfråga

- The home exam was good. I also liked your approach of encouraging cooperation while not forcing it.»
- Students are sadly human - lazy bastards and Corinee Maier fans. Hence to co-write results in WBS...»
- I absolutely had a blast attempting the home exam. It has been the most satisfying experience and I had a good grade in the home exam too.»
- I will not co-write a home exam again.»
- Some parts of questions (further explanations) was not very clear to me»
- Wrote by myself»
- I think that it would be better if we have a lecture regarding how to write this kind of essays before the home examination. Specially for international students. »
- The questions have been quite tricky, and it was not straight forward to answer them. On the other hand the grading seemed to be very generous, since I got quite high-scores even though I was not reaching the detail level I was aiming for due to time issues. This is of course good for me, but might misrepresent the general very good quality of this course. What I mean is, that it should be hard to get very good grades in a course with a high level of quality (which is certainly the case for IPR010).»
- Got zero on the last question, which I find strange... (Jans comment: Strange, as no student got a zero on the last question. Please contact me so we can clear this out)» (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)

4. The Project Work

Matrisfråga

- Had a hard time with the project work. Since i was the only from "I" and the only one with hand on experience on how things are wanted to run here I ended up explaining a lot. This very frustrating when you want to se progress in the work but end only seing minor progress among your groupmembers. To explain the concept of an introduction and the need of one for half an hour should should not be mine responsibility... On the other hand I did gain first hand knowledge on cultural and other project related issues. The problem is that this isnt including in my grade besides some % via the home exam. »
- It was frustrating that some members of the group did not have any experience and little skills in how to write a report.»
- Supervisor"s comments(positive) on draft didn"t quite reflect his final scoring(not so high).»
- Time consuming - but interesting in both social and scientific ways.»
- We had (NN) as supervisor. The interaction between us and him was virtually non-existent. That was his choise, not ours. From the little communication we had he didn"t seem like he wanted to help us do a good job. It was not a fun experience. (The name NN is made known to the evaluation committee of the course, but is withheld here for reasons of Swedish legislation /Jan)» (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)
- (NN) was the worst tutor I have ever had. (The name NN is made known to the evaluation committee of the course, but is withheld here for reasons of Swedish legislation /Jan)» (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)

5. The Lectures

There are two questions for each topic. Content means "I recognize the contents of this lecture as important for my future performance would I pursue a career in product development projects", and Presentation means "I recognize that the presenter made a fine effort of presenting the topic"

Matrisfråga

- I don"t remember exactly which class was which. Overall Jan"s lectures felt like world-class. He is a great lecturer in many ways. I bad lecturer in no ways. He should lecture more for the benefit of Chalmers students. But then again, maybe it would be hard to keep up his uniquely personal and engaging way of lecturing. Jonas Roth was also excellent. He was a pleasant figure and he gave new perspectives to known topics. To bring one point up, I appreciated how he repeatedly put emphasis on interacting with people as individuals. Dave Williamson was very good. Pouya was good. The topic felt important, but not very connected to my current reality. It was a topic that might be good to learn more about in the future.»
- Shadow system rocked. There is a lack of lectures regarding office politics otherwise...»
- Jan is one of the best professors I have ever come across. Thank you for all you exciting classes. I enjoyed them a lot..!»
- It was some of the most inspirational courses I have ever taken, and no I am not kidding, I don"t think there are many courses which can make students smile more than they yawn and at the same time retain all that they have learned by all the stories they are told which link perfectly with the course concepts. Bravo!»
- Guest lectures were very useful and interesting. They were well linked with theory and with Jan`s prior lecture to prepare us on specific topic of guest lectures.»
- I didn"t attend many lectures because of time optimization. But my general impression was that they were often a bit unclear / very soft as opposed to hard knowledge. »
- Jan is an excelent lecturer. He knows how to capture the attention of the students and how to make lectures in an interactive way which is something valuable for increasing learning.»
- of the guest lecturers ony Dave Williamson stood out in a positive way. Jan"s style of lecturing with anecdotes and questioning keeps you on edge and makes it more memorable.»
- All the anecdotes presented by Jan makes the classes fun to listen to but many times you have not understood what Jan actually tried to teach. After each anecdote I would need a "So, this teaches us that...". (Jans comment: Good advice - thanks)» (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)

6. The Pre-readings and the Literature Seminar

Matrisfråga

- The literature seminar was interesting. The discussion on Verganti"s paper in particular so. Jan talked much about perspectives and frameworks through the course. When discussing Verganti"s paper he brought up an important framework that I hadn"t used explicitly until then. Or at least not worded and made concrete as explicitly as Jan did. We were too many for it to be a good practice of group discussion. I liked that everyone needed to speak, without forcing people to speak in ways they feel are uncomfortable and unpleasant.»

7. Round-up questions

Matrisfråga

- Can"t believe Jan bought one of those after being discouraged and see the c1 get humiliated in class.»
- The articles were not too academic. They were mostly pleasant reading. There were some exceptions. But as those exceptions might have been due to distracted reading from my side, I don"t want to single them out. Awareness is one of the first steps. The first steep might be to care for looking for knowledge gaps. Excellent round-up questions. Things like that make filling this form out feel like fun play and not a chore. It is a good Friday night.»
- Found a city scooter on ebay for 1500$. Almost bought it...then I remembered: I dont have a driving license for motorcycles ¤,#"%"¤,»
- Hope you like your scooter! It has a very nice red finish!»
- I hope I am able to make enough money to buy a Mercedes S Class instead of a BMW City Scooter after I graduate!!!»
- :)»
- haha»
- (but it is functional)»
- Eventhough I have gained much knowledge in this course, I do not think it will have a positive impact on my salary. This due to a profound shadow system and the fact that I am a woman.»
- The BMW scooter episode was absolutely hilarious! But fear not, in Milan - fashion capital of the world, I saw several of them. At least 5...plus competitors like Peugeot.»
- The BMW city scooter might be special in design, but it is for sure very pracitical, esp. when considering the dimensions and the parking situation in the city of gothenburg.»

The academic writing style is too complex and thus, ironically, reduces the sharing of knowledge

- Adequate in the sense that it"s not the most interesting subject to me.» (Adequate)
- Would have been better if students, with no project work experince (from school), had addended a class in i writing a scientific paper!» (Good)
- But Jan Wickenberg is excellent and should def. continue to teach people about life.» (Good)
- Excellent, only because of Jan Wickenberg. His lectures were so exciting thar no one ever fell asleep in his lectures, which is the usual scenario in many others" lectures, and that achievement deserves CREDIT.» (Excellent)
- I think Jan"s teaching style was the driving force behind this course! Contact, Pulp Fiction and the ever so thrilling Pim Pim boxes made this course wayyy more fun than your average run of the mill economics class...*yawn*» (Excellent)
- This was one of the best course lectures that I have ever attended. Jan Wickenberg`s lectures are a good example of how academic teaching should look like. His 100% devotion to his lectures, literature seminar and through group consultations was astonishing. Jan`s lectures were comprehensive, clear and highly methodological. One of his secrets was in a great balance between theory and practice by using interested examples, and a lot of laugh in his class (he was the only who never laugh on his jokes). That`s why was the possibility to find a sleepy student on his lecture equally zero. The reason why students have broadly accepted him could be in his creation of collaborative environment where professors have equal opportunity to learn through mutual reflection with students. Students accepted his idea to always question if there is something unintentionally neglected in science articles what could be used for future improvements of proposed framework or a theory.» (Excellent)

21. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- "The Shadow System" lecture.»
- Jan Wickenberg»
- Jan Wickenberg"s exciting lectures, he is the soul of the course.»
- Group work and the texts»
- The literature seminar because it actually made me learn that I have to reflect upon what is written and judge it if I think its right or not instead of just absorbing everything that comes by like a mindless zombie.»
- Jan`s award system through "pin-pins" was highly motivating for students. Maybe he could increase their number next year.»
- The movies (contact) to show examples of the owl and fox. The Pim Pim boxed that encouraged people to speak in class.»
- Jan Wickenberg»
- Jan Wickenberg»
- the guest-lecturers.»
- Team Works and the sense of humour of Jan!!!»
- Project management is an important tool for any business, not only for product development and most of the concepts apply for a variety of fields. This course is basic in a master like MEI. »
- Home exam»
- The spontaneous online bidding on small vehicles, preferably those funny looking ones.»

22. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Chose more interesting articels to discuss in the seminar if one will be held. Jan is a good lecturer, but that article he wrote is way boring to discuss.»
- Background checks on admitted students. Mailorder degrees should not be let in. »
- May be some of the guest lectures could be made more exciting...but they were good anyway.»
- ust a tip.»
- I think the take home exam should be individual because there is hardly a time with both the group members contributing an equal effort yet they are graded the same.»
- If I could give him one minor advice it would be regarding his stories. Sometimes he was little fast for some of us (mostly international students) so we need to ask our Swedish fellow students to explain what was the meaning of his story. That happened only few times and it has related in my case only to hersaying the stories, not understanding his lectures.»
- tougher grading, higher workload»
- nothing really stroke me as negative»
- Focus more on the social networking (it is a reality trend nowadays)»
- that the home-exam is individual and can not be writen in pair!»
- Sometimes I felt that there were many other questions but people just don´,t ask, maybe there could be another methodology to involve more the students with the topics so that all students will feel more critical with what is being tought. E.g. having short discussions among small groups during the lecture is a helpful methodology to interact with the lecturer. »
- Guest lecturers.»
- Don"t have (NN) as a tutor. (The name NN is made known to the evaluation committee of the course, but is withheld here for reasons of Swedish legislation /Jan)» (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)
- Ok, this is a really small thing but it annoyed me: When Jan told the story about how the problem with the space rocket was discovered he could have skipped the comment "While the wifes went to the kitchen to take care of the dishes, the men went out to the garage..." Maybe this was the case, but since he told us he had joined courses in gender science I got the impression that he actually cared about changing the attitudes about the traditional roles of the sexes. As I said, no big deal, just a tip. (Jans comment: Important tip, thanks.)» (den här kommentaren har blivit redigerad i efterhand)

23. Additional comments

- Again. Student with mailorder degrees should not be let in. »
- The lecturers should explain more on theory and concepts since the students are coming from different backgrounds. It is not easy to catch up the lectures.»
- I wish there were more courses which Jan would teach us, he would certainly be missed and will always be the most inspirational teacher not only to me but to many future Chalmerists as well!»
- Jan`s class offers successful introduction to MEI pro gramme and could be a powerful word-of-mouth marketing for future Chalmers master students. »
- It was good that questions was directed to sprecific persons so that not just the talkative people got a chance to say something.»
- need more coaching for the project.»
- not really....»
- it really does help to have a professor as interesting as mr wickenberg. great job.»
- Jan and Dave make all the difference in this course.»
