- The TAs were not with better understanding» (50%)
- The tutorials were so weak, did"nt give us any insight or any new information about the course material. The teacher asistants were just concerned by writing the answers on the board, without any discussion or any explanations from them. Moreover, They gave the impression that they are not good enough for teaching the course, as they lack the experience and the information to do that. So, as the solutions are already published on the homepage, it wasn"t usefull to attend the tutorials.» (50%)

Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

6. How understandable are the course goals?

53 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»7 13%
The goals are difficult to understand»4 7%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»22 41%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»20 37%

Genomsnitt: 3.03

- What the course contained was very diffuse, there are a few concepts, bot no "red line" imho.» (The goals are difficult to understand)
- The course PM in general was so crowded with topics to fit in the quarter period, so We didn"t go deep in any of them. Moreover, the course contents are not linked together, and one can never deduce what the next lecture would be about from the course workflow.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- The goals does not seem to have been explicitly stated. And there were no reading instructions, so I simply assumed that the important bits were highlighted in the lectures.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- Although it was mostly framing the expectations of the course early on.» (The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn)

7. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

49 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»2 4%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»40 81%
No, the goals are set too high»7 14%

- the same comment as the above. » (No, the goals are set too low)
- Would have preferred more exercises and tutorial sesions, as the learning curve was more steep, doing things hands on.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- Maybe 30% of the course was repetition. That might be too much. On the other hand, I now feel much more confident with the signals and systems subject.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- We should not be given so much of burden regarding projects.» (No, the goals are set too high)

8. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

50 svarande

Yes, definitely»17 34%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»17 34%

- Difficult to test concepts on an written exam...» (To some extent)
- I just loved solving the 7th question in the exam. As it was something not presented directly in the book, while I was a little bored with the other regular questions. The questions number 7 really made me think as an engineer than as a person taking an exam. I hope to see more such kind of questions.» (Yes, definitely)
- The examination seemed to focus on the important aspects, and tested whether we understood the main concepts.» (Yes, definitely)

- if lecturer can give us the copies of contents of lectures, it will be better. because it is a waste of time to take note on the lecture and sometimes it is hard to follow while taking notes.» (Small extent)
- Even though I have worked a bare little on Acoustic echo cancellation, it was really good to see how things work. I recollect that the TMS DSP kit that I used some 8 years ago in my under-grad, the same was used here. None the less, the learning was definitely more profound. The dicussions were a lot fun. Come to think of it, maybe there is no need to learn the latest DSPs in the market but good to learn the basics first.» (Large extent)

- För ingående repetition, en kurs på avancerad nivå ska grundas på att man har grundläggande kunskaper. » (Some extent)
- Lectures were fantastic. The application of DSP was felt. The analogies are still embedded. But, I would have preferred if the notations used during the lectures were more consistent. The lectures notes are brilliant, and easy to follow compared to the black board writings. Errors or typos in the slides, kept me away from them.» (Large extent)
- The way I see it, the lectures should complement the litterature, provide what can not be obtained by reading a book, to provide deeper insight and knowledge about the topic, and customize it to the scope of the course. I feelt that too much of the lectures were wasted for presenting details that we could have found in a book.» (Large extent)

- can they teach rather than read and write?» (Small extent)
- The idea of tutorials where the TA simply solves exercises is very bad in my oppinion, you are not given the opportunity to try to think for yourself... Since the overall workload during this quarter has been so high, there simply has been no time to solve problems individually. A better way to run tutorials is to state a problem, then give the class a 5-10 minutes to try to solve the question themselves, walk around and help the ones who needs it. Then the TA can solve the problem for the class.» (Small extent)
- The teacher explained way too fast, it was really hard to understand when she had to go through that many excersises. 4 tutorials with the same material had been better.» (Some extent)
- The tasks were done in too high speed» (Some extent)
- Very good tutorials, could have been more of them though.» (Large extent)
- The tutorials were very well organized, and the exercises given with methodology and clarity. The lectures were available for questions. I think it was the most helpful part of the course.» (Great extent)

- Even though, I feel the Rxx and Ryx were somewhat a repetition of what Mats Viberg had done in MVE135. None the less, they only reaffirmed my basics.» (Large extent)
- The studio sessions were well planned and thought out. Unfortunately I missed the second one though. However, the TA:s were kinda uninterested in the session and more interested in looking into their own problems. They were always 15-20 minutes late to the studio sessions for example.» (Large extent)

- The projects have been very interesting to carry out, but it was quite easy to pass them without understanding anything about the subject at all. The "oral exams" were good, but I regret not bringing more questions (which might be due to me not really understanding what they really were about).» (Small extent)
- Only project 1A was usefull, and we got the main idea from it as we came up with the code ourselves, but the other 2 projects were not of any use and they were just time consuming for us, as the code was already implemented, and we had only to plot some graphs and explain them, which was difficult as we did"nt get a full understanding of the project topics and did"nt get so deep in the theory itsletf. I think that understanding the theory is much more important for us as a Masters student, rather than consuming the time in unusefull projects.» (Small extent)
- Project groups shouldnt be grouped by the lecturer, since the grade is dependent on the project results. A fair grading is not possible and result only on very high workload for students that care about their grade. Since there is no evaluation of how the group working is done, there is no argument to do it like that. The project reports and oral exams should include more and earlier feedback. The aims of the reports should be more obvious, especially when there is no feedback about them. As a result of these points, the whole project organization should be reviewed, especially for big class sizes.» (Some extent)
- Som sagt för mycket fokus på rapporten.» (Some extent)
- The knowledge that is required for the projects should be given before we start the project at the lectures and not after. We had to spend much more time gettinf prepared for them» (Large extent)
- Loved these projects, even though the coding was less compared to others, the learning was more. The .c files provided for the DSP had some really amazing code. Even a beginner can follow. Loved the simplicity of the projects and the depth to which we realized the influence of a small term in some equations. :D » (Large extent)
- Discussions with my group expanded my view of the subject, and the need to formulate our results forced me to think a lot about the different problems.» (Large extent)

- The book is rather basic and it does not cover the last lectures correctly, in my opinion» (Small extent)
- I had to use a complementary course book, because the course literature would not cover all the matters in depth.» (Some extent)
- The book was OK, things were explained clearly in a way which made it easy to pick up and understand. I often felt it lacked some depth though. The major problem with the book was the lack of time to read it... With a little more time on hand, it"d be possible to derive the depth on one"s own. » (Some extent)
- Some topics were good in the book, and some of them were really bad, especially the Multirate chapter..» (Some extent)
- It"s a good book. » (Large extent)
- For once, I bought a brand new book of this prescribed book. Even it was written in 1991, nothing much as changed these proven DSP concepts. The flow of English and the writing is so easy to follow, that reading it once is good enough to understand the topic at hand.» (Large extent)
- Project 2 were very effective for learning LMS and its properties. » (Large extent)
- The course book explained things in a way that was easy to understand, compared to other books in the subject I have read. It did not cover the different topics very thoroughly as some other books though, which I had to consult a few times (no problem though). I would"ve liked some tips about other good literature (further reading).» (Large extent)

- Hard to ask questions during lecture. » (Rather poor)
- Excluding the lecturer, the other stuff didn"t offer us much help in answering our questions, either because they lack the experience and the info for doing that in the (tutotials), or for not showing much willing to help us in the (projects).» (Rather poor)
- Environment is very fine but student don"t have much time for self study, the projects are too much and there are oral examination even on day of examination. There should not be any classes, projects, assignments, oral exams at least one week before the exams so that student can prepare himself for the examination. This suggestion is not for this course only, it is for all the courses..» (Rather good)
- Everyone involved in the course were helpful and willing to answer questions. But there were so many students taking the course, that it was VERY hard to actually get a chance to answer any questions.» (Rather good)

- The students in my project group was all taking different other courses, which means that we had some difficulties finding time to work on the project together. » (Rather well)
- The mix of creating the group was really nice, even though, sometime was taken in forming the group. For the first time, I could work with a swede and a chinese. So far, I have not worked with them. Liked to work with different cultures and the best practices are finally shown up in the report.» (Very well)

- I think it should have been more encourage to spend some time on hand calculations, the focus lies very much on Matlab (projects and studio), pretty much on theory (lectures) but not so much on problem solving by hand (like problems from the book).» (Adequate)
- Would have preferred more, but along with the other mandatory course, it can be too burdensome.» (Adequate)
- It was a good balanced course.» (Adequate)
- The point, this course workload makes no poor concentration on other courses of study.» (High)
- Project 2 started too late, Too much with three projects and exam, HIPs and other associated assignments.» (Too high)
- Too many unusefull projects and time-consuming handin problems that kept us away from learning the theory itself.» (Too high)

- Don"t know how things got done...there was hardly anytime to reflect upon anything else.» (High)
- I read this course in parallel with High Frequency Electrics and have pretty much only had time to work with Applied Signal Processing, to the detriment of my other course.» (Too high)
- I think having 5 different projects to accomplish, then to write the report for each of them and also to take the oral exam again for each of them, the quizzes, homeworks and etc. in only 7 weeks is quite frustrating. One large project including all or most of the key points for each course should be a better idea. It would help us concentrate more and get the ideas easier.» (Too high)
- Two courses with projects, some of them really labour intensive is way too much. I really feel the sheer amount of work diring this quarter has influenced my learning _heavily_. During the entire quarter, me, my group mates and everyone else I have spoken to have _only_ fought to stay afloat, working towards the next deadline. The result of this was that it was never possible to study the litterature properly, to solve exercises on our own or think about what was happening at all... This is my fourth year here at Chalmers, and I must say this quarter is BY FAR the worst one I"ve gone through.» (Too high)
- Both of the mandatory courses for the communications program are so crowded to be taken in one quarter, we barely had time to do anything in the quarter as the workload was so heavy that we did"nt even have much time to sleep or to study for the final exam. I don"t think the system should be like that.» (Too high)

- A total makeover should be done for that course.» (Poor)
- Too diffuse course content, not connected to each other.» (Fair)
- it is a very extensive course and one should have diverse knowledge of signal and systems and also good mathematic background otherwise there are lots of problems and questions which sould be investigated to understand the course ,so I think this course needs more teacher assistants(in terms of quality and quantity)in order to help those are not so sophesticated in backgrouns.» (Adequate)
- I think I learned a lot. But the following negative points biased my impression: project grouping and the way how the reports were graded (no clear tasks in combination with no feedback at all afterwards)» (Adequate)
- Expected a lot more math in the examination but the focus seemed to be more on the concepts. Also, liked the A4 size paper being allowed in the exam.» (Good)
- I think the knowledge gained from this course is important for the future, because this course educated engineers. » (Good)
- VERY good course, one of if not the best I"ve read at Chalmers. The workload is too high though. Very good with a course this applied, it"s a lot easier to understand concepts with applied in reality.» (Excellent)
- Best course during chalmers» (Excellent)

21. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- lectures, exercises & effective studios»
- Projects»
- Mostly everything»
- The projects Hand ins- very usefull, specially the camera tracker was really good»
- its good enough for next year.»
- Projects,tutorials,»
- projects are very good for the learning»
- The tutorial should be least near of exam questions or should prepare for exam.»
- The tutorials»
- The projects were interesting. so were the hand-ins»
- The high-speed tutorials and high quality lectures.»
- The text book.»
- Tomas Mcelvey, best teacher at Chalmers»
- projects style»
- lecture slides and slides.»
- the projects are very efficient in terms of learning specially the last one.»
- The hand-in projects, they were really good. The only time you might come close to actually think about what you was doing.»
- Less workload, more focus on the literature.»
- I prefer the new exam style.»
- the book. »
- Just few topics about the adaptive filtering, but the other topics should be revised carefully. the tutorials should cover more most of the contentrs. 3 tutorials are not enough at all.»
- The excellent teaching of the theory in digital signal processing. The final exam were brillint, because it did test understanding. It was good that it did not contain long proofs, which only test graphical memory. »
- All the things need to be preserved for next year.»
- projects are very helpful and oral exam is a good review and conclusion.»

22. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- course load should be less, more exercise sessions»
- Total amount of HIP and project »
- Maybe project 2 could be scaled down in some way, as it is now project 2 consists only of trying to convert math to C code, debugging the system and writing a report. (Project 2 is however very fun).»
- Well, the projects were excellent, however is very applied to communication engineering, for example, we did about OFDM without guidance (not a problem for me since I have the background) but it could be more about signal processing on the whole.»
- reduce no of projects....»
- Studio session»
- course contents are too much..»
- 1 . - The book, for me is not advanced enough for the course 2. - The first project, too focus on communications. You need a background in Communications that my partners did not have.»
- The tutorials should be change and the project load should be reduced because 3 project in 7 weeks is really difficult and not gives time to complete the course.»
- The course literature. The lectures structures so that it coincides with the projects.»
- The tutorials do not really match with the contents of the course, it might be reconsidered. The projects do not help us learn or practice much. In fact, we do not implement anything ourselves, since we have all the materials step by step or even the implementation completely in advance. So, we do not really understand what is happening deeply in the projects. I think it would be better to do the projects ourselves only with some clues given.»
- Project groups. My project group had entirely different schedules which meant some of us had to skip lectures or exercises just to have time to meet the group.»
- Perhaps the DSP project could be extended, on the other hand it was nice that it didn"t take so much time since it"s in the last study week.»
- Just one more studio/exercise session.»
- Better course book»
- the content of exercise»
- projects are intensive. »
- studio sessions could be more tutrial form.»
- If students can choose their groupmate»
- The projects, they really did not give you very much insight about anything.»
- Have two projects instead of three, it takes too much time from the rest of the studying with that many projects. Have harder demands on the prior knowledge, that students are familiar with matlab and signals and systems. I did ALL the work in our projects myself.»
- some changes should be brought to the projects and hand in problems. Since a lot of students copy those from senior students. This is unfair for those who work hard and try to solve problems on their own.»
- Workload is too high. The written examination should be removed.»
- Topics about Multirate systems, DFT and applications to it are more important to be detailed, the first 3-4 lectures are of no use and can compressed more than that. The studio sessions should be canceled. We can download it form the homepage and make it at home.the TA"s should be changed.»
- The grading of the projects were a disaster. No clear advice on what should be awarded full points or what should be done to pass the project. I advice that the projects become a mandatory part of the course but not part of the grade.»
- As this course is compulsory for the communication engineering students. While making the groups, it should be taken into consideration that all the students should be from the same degree program except rare cases. It becomes difficult for the group members from different programs to spare time for lab testing. Handin problems should have more marks as i found them equally difficult comparing to project. There should be more tutorials for practice. »
- I don"t like that the grading on the project reports were normal distributed. It was kind of unspecified what was needed to get high scores on the projects.»
- project grouping, project organization, clear project report tasks or a detailed feedback»
- Göra bedömningsmallar där det framgår vad som ska finnas med i rapporten för en given betygsnivå.»
- Can reduce some workload»
- I would like that the purpose of the lectures should be to inspire, not to repeat specific details about mathematical formulas that could be found in books. Tell us what to read, and instead use the lectures to inspire us to want to read about this intriguing subject. On one lecture, our lecturer actually said that what he was about to talk about is booring, but neccessary. Never say that what you talk about is booring. Whay do you talk about booring stuff? Do I really need to pay attention? Am I an idiot if I actually find it interesting? You are here to inspire us, not to teach us what is booring but neccessary.»

23. Additional comments

-
- Great course, good lectures, tutorials and computer sessions.»
- It is a very good course, it is a real pity we do not have more time to do more, I will recomend to give another course with DSP"s and more methods, seems.»
- In this study period, both of the courses are majors and total number of projects are 5. which is too much for a study period.»
- It would be good to get more feedback on the project reports»
- So far so good :) Keep this course going. Feel more learned. Thanks and cheers :)»
- Really great and interesting course»
- although rather hard, I think we achieve the goals and master some knowledge»
- Good luck!»
- Ingemar Andersson was very helpful and pedagogical!»
- I found the course material, lectures and expacially the teaching style of Mr. Tomas very much excellent.»
- I really appriciated that we did not have to form the project groups ourselves. That is a very daunting challenge for someone like myself who does not know anyone else who is taking the course. And it"s interesting to get to work with new people. It"s good that we were encouraged to use english when talking to the teachers, even though we share the same language. Someone who does not know that language, might also be interested in the answer to the question.»
