Your own effort

1. How many hours per week did you spend on this course?

We mean total time, that is, it comprises the time you spent in class and the time you spent on your own work. Try to estimate the average time over the entire study period.

22 svarande

At most 15 hours/week»6 27%
Around 20 hours/week»4 18%
Around 25 hours/week»8 36%
Around 30 hours/week»3 13%
At least 35 hours/week»1 4%

Genomsnitt: 2.5

- It needs much more time. I underestimated the course. » (At most 15 hours/week)
- The reason for less amount of time given to this course is that the other course (SSY120) had too busy schedule in terms of project.» (At most 15 hours/week)
- Back to back lectures especially on Monday morning demanded a lot of attention especially after lunch. Maybe, this is good, as there is so much to learn, jumping starting every week in this manner is good in an overall sense, but would prefer a good break inbetween classes. Two back to back lectures require tremendous attention span.» (Around 25 hours/week)

2. How large part of the teaching offered did you attend?

- If Rossitza were to teach another subject as part of my programme, I would love to be there.» (100%)

Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

3. How understandable are the course goals?

22 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»3 13%
The goals are difficult to understand»1 4%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»9 40%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»9 40%

Genomsnitt: 3.09

- Goals were clear but the subject and the topics packed into it were huge. Especially, the labs being packed towards the end of the course was really uncomfortable to handle. I would have preferred them to be started at the beginning of the course or in parallel after 25% of the lecture was completed.» (The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn)

4. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

21 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»1 4%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»17 80%
No, the goals are set too high»3 14%

Genomsnitt: 2.09

- Come to think of it, the goals seem reasonable as most of the topics were packed into that 7 weeks of lecture are of prime importance for a communication engineering.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

5. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

21 svarande

No, not at all»1 4%
To some extent»11 52%
Yes, definitely»8 38%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»1 4%

Genomsnitt: 2.42

- Frankly speaking, I like the way the examination papers are set at Chalmers. They really intend to test the knowledge gained over the 7 week period. Moreover, applying them sitting for 4 hours, is something that I am not used to, but those 4 hours seem too short.» (Yes, definitely)

Teaching and course administration

6. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?

22 svarande

Small extent»3 13%
Some extent»11 50%
Large extent»5 22%
Great extent»3 13%

Genomsnitt: 2.36

- I really enjoyed being in Rossitza"s and Mats Viberg"s lectures. I loved the intensity and the passion of the lectures, the manner in which they taught the subject. I have heard lots of people frown about the beauty of a result obtained. I guess, only those who love the language of nature will get it. Mats Viberg"s lectures were real fun. The lectures were so lucid, that at times, it did not feel like there was any math involved. I admire both the lectures and appreciate the teaching staff for this course.» (Great extent)

7. To what extent has the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?

22 svarande

Small extent»2 9%
Some extent»5 22%
Large extent»12 54%
Great extent»3 13%

Genomsnitt: 2.72

- Initially, the book seemed like a big mountain sitting in front of me to be conquered. I am thankful for the library dept or whoever made the book/ebook available. It was a lot easier to carry it around and refer. At times, I felt that Scott Miller and Donald Childers were too wordy about mathematical expressions and I feel Leon-Garcia are very clear in their expression. Then again, once you get used to Miller and Childers, there is no turning back. Its a good book :)» (Large extent)

8. How well did the course administration, web page, handouts etc work?

22 svarande

Very badly»1 4%
Rather badly»6 27%
Rather well»10 45%
Very well»5 22%

Genomsnitt: 2.86

- I think, the webpage should be on the student portal as some of my fellow mates had problems, especially when it came to homework assignments. Then again, it was interesting to get inspired by the accomplishments of the teaching staff :) The text book problems were well done by Sima Shahsavari, she explained each and every problem in the exercise class clearly. The handouts did not contain all the steps to arrive at the solution, this motivated me all the more to solve the problem by hand instead of just admiring at the methodology.» (Rather badly)

14. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The lab of this course, it"s useful for next course.»
- All of it.»
- Assignments»
- Last week without lectures in order to concentrate on the lab.»

15. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- The last lab exercise was too late in the course. It totally ruined my studies for the first exam in the exam period, which was very early. The lecturer preferred to rush through mathematical proofs instead of explaining what we actually were dealing with. I regret attending the lectures, the time would have been much better spent reading the book on my own.»
- Some too theory part with out pratical exercise»
- Maybe a orientation note, at the start of the lecture series might better prepare the students.»
- Course content (It was very huge)»
- Quantity of information, and the complexity of exercises classes should be higher since the exam complexity was a lot more higher than the excercises.»

16. Additional comments

- The level was much too high for us who have studied the electrical engineering programme here at chalmers and only have had a very brief introduction to statistics.»
- The teacher work hard and always very carefully.»
- I was indeed a privilege to listen Rossitza, Mats and Sima. Thanks»
