Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

6. How understandable are the course goals?

29 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»4 13%
The goals are difficult to understand»1 3%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»14 48%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»10 34%

Genomsnitt: 3.03

- The goals are clearly in the lecture but are missing more or less totally in the exercises.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- Its somtimes har to se how importent different parts are. Espasally in the MVDA part.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)

7. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

27 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»1 3%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»23 85%
No, the goals are set too high»3 11%

Genomsnitt: 2.07

- The goals are reasonable but,as I am not a quick learner, I need more time to achieve the goals» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- I feel that in particular the MVDA computer section contains far to much detail without enough teaching time. Especially because it is hard to learn to use a computer program in larger class sizes. The project could have been explained more clearly to begin with. I feel that many people did not understand what exactly was required. » (No, the goals are set too high)

8. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

27 svarande

No, not at all»0 0%
To some extent»11 40%
Yes, definitely»3 11%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»13 48%

Genomsnitt: 3.07

- My feeling is that many new (at least to me) methods were brought up at the exam. I had to learn new things during the exam.» (To some extent)
- The time given for MVDA computer examination is too short. We need to read the instruction, understand the question and data given, run evaluation in SIMCA and write report in just 1 hour. We were tested on speed more than understanding.» (I don"t know/have not been examined yet)

Teaching and course administration

9. How was the subject coverage of the lectures ?

29 svarande

They covered too little material»4 13%
About right»15 51%
They covered somewhat too much material»7 24%
They covered much too much material»2 6%
Don"t know/did not attend»1 3%

Genomsnitt: 2.34

- The lectures covered the material well but the lecturing was a little bit to fast and could have used more time explaining the material» (About right)
- Everything was just gone over briefly. I would have liked a little more depth of the topic even if this means less material to go through.» (They covered somewhat too much material)
- A bit too much topic to be covered. No deep understanding on every topic» (They covered somewhat too much material)
- I personally did not like how the class material was presented. I did not like having the teachers using power point for a "Math" course. Also, it would have been nice to have simplified practice problems (ie. 2^2 factorial design instead of 2^6 which takes a long time to solve. Smaller problems would be easier to practice and comprehend the material and concepts)» (They covered much too much material)

16. What is your opinion about having a discussion-lecture concerning Sustainability in this course in experimental design

- Important to consider that aspect also.»
- It is really an excellent arrangement and is a must.By this way, someone can play their role well especially in more sustainable way.»
- The time was so short to be familiar with the subject.»
- N/A»
- not nessesery»
- Good!»
- There are enough courses about sustainability (e.g. Global chemical sustainability) that can be taken by the students. The action of chemical engineering is discussed there frequently. So I see no need for a discussion in this lecture.»
- Good move!»
- It shoulden"t be good»
- good idea, but I lacked time to participate»
- Didn"t attend but generally I think that we have enough of sustainability in the GCS course. Leave it there.»
- Good»
- Interesting, but a bit unnecessary. It would be better to use that time to focus on the course.»
- Great lecture, we need more discusion from other dicipline to know how advantages the experimental design course»
- It was great and useful bringing sustainability issues in experimental design. »
- Nice practising critcal thinking»
- Because Sweden is very advanced in sustainability, it is usefull to have some of it in all the courses of Chalmers.»
- good information to know about the connection of two subjects»
- Good, it"s important to have discussions sometimes, but the lecture did"t give me so much.»

- Attend on a calculation lecture and went after 15min... cant hear what he says and what he write on the board (Rodmar, was haveing the calculation)» (Poor)
- Jan Rodmar is not a good teacher. He barely speaks English and it´,s very hard to see what he is writhing. And when he don´,t know what to say ha speaks Swedish, which makes it vary hard for the international students.» (Poor)
- Very hard to hear what the teacher was saying. Very hard to read the handwriting on the board. To little time for the examples - we were always behind the schedule. Good intentions from the teacher, but he does not reaach through to the students. » (Poor)
- I only attended the first calculation. Rodmar is a good advisor for one student, but I can"t hear what he say, and I cant read what he write. This makes it difficult.» (Poor)
- Sometimes difficult to follow Jan Rodmars, and his writing on the board was unclear. Full solutions should be given for at least a few exercises on each chapter in the exercise compendium. especially the later chapter, 10,11,13» (Fair)
- It would have been good if Jan used real numbers instead of general letters when doing the calculations, since it was hard to understand how to use the letters for calculating even the same exercise as he had done previously on the black board» (Adequate)
- Jan Rodmar really knows his subject, but there are several problems with his teaching. His English is hard to follow and he has difficulties to understand our questions. He should need to talk louder (microphone?). Especially since he is often talking to the black-board instead of the class. He should also plan so he keeps the schedule. » (Adequate)
- Harder than exam problem. More of easier problems to start each chapter.» (Adequate)
- They were relevant but badly planed.» (Adequate)

- Very bad planning, and confusing in the optimazation. When we finlaly understdo what to do we made it in one day including the report. NOT GOOD» (Poor)
- It didn"t help at all. It was mostly a guessing game, and the advisor (Rodmar) was busy helping other groups al the scheduled excercises. I learned most of the course after the project was finished.» (Poor)
- In the end it helped learning but I felt that if the assignment was made clearer from the beginning it would have been easier. » (Adequate)
- It increases my understanding to a small deal, and my experience to a larger extent. » (Adequate)
- Allways good with practical work.» (Excellent)

22. What do you think about the optimization project?

- Very good way to learn by your mistakes»
- Interresting but very time consuming.»
- It is an good and awesome project where student can really pratice their knowledges that learn from the course immediately and mimic to the industry situation which will encounter in the future.Good exposure and experience.»
- very helpful. more than helful than MVDA!»
- The experimental design project was excellent. It certainly helped teach the course material.»
- NOT GOOD, se above !»
- o.k.»
- Too few teachers. 95 % of the time spent on this project was spent waiting for help from the teacher, that is not acceptable! It would also have been good if a paper with what the project should contain and in which order things were to be performed had been hended out in the beginning of the project so that we knew what to do. Then people wouldn"t have had to wait for help with what to do next.»
- It was said that we would learn a great deal because we didn"t know everything from the beginning on and had to approach the problem ourselves. The problem with this is that there occur a lot of questions. With just one person being in charge for answering this lead to a lot of people sitting around for four hours not being able to do anything. This has to be improved!»
- interesting.»
- great»
- Good, but it could be clearer on what is good or bad. For example, is an experiment (that is not essential but increases your knowledge) that yields high profit good since it gives profit or bad because it increases experiment days? More supervisors are needed, so we can get our questions answered in reasonable time. Now we were often just sitting of time, waiting for help (on things our fellowstudents couldn"t help us with).»
- In the end very fun, but we were so many student and few teachers so it was much waiting before anything happened. Something it was 1 hour waiting time and I don"t think that should be in that way.»
- A lot of the project task were done before we got the lecture for that. So the learning process wasn"t optimized»
- Good»
- Good project. An extra teacher / smaller groups is needed. Most of the time at class was spent on waiting for help. You were lucky if you could get any help at all because there were always som many others who also wanted help. »
- Very interesting, but very litle understanding whwn we start the project.»
- It is a coog project but when we have class it is much dead time just waiting for healp.»
- Too few teachers!»
- Nice project. Reality based because of time pressure and limited experiments. Too much focus on Lack of Fit.»
- it started when we had a little knowledge about the cours and in the beginning there was not enough discussion and overview of the total aim and the way we should do that»
- Very usefull»
- Really good and intresting project this kind of project is something I want to se more of at Chalmers.»

- It is hard to learn a computer program from just two lessons especially when the number of staff does not permit all students to be able to ask individual questions. » (Fair)
- The three lectures are not enough to understand it. All most of the people did was to figure out how to run the program and make some fortune telling about the results. » (Fair)
- The theory was ok. But the examination form was not so good. Maybe it should be a larger project instead of an exam.» (Fair)

- You learn som basic things.» (Adequate)
- The project gave a lot but my group got no help at all at the MVDA-consaltation.» (Adequate)
- There is a large need for more teachers. When doing the project, Jonas was in our room the first hour, where he just checked that everyone was there and helped us decide on what needed to be done. Then, just when people had gotten started and started to get questions, he had to leave for one hour to get the other class started. He then returned for one hour, where he had time to help approximately 30 % of the students then he had to go beck to the other class again. This ment that 70 % of the students did not get any help with their project at all, whole 30 % did. This is both unfair and frustrating and it felt like wasted time. The project in itself is however good, but there is a need for more teachers.» (Good)
- Need to be clear on the ambition level of the MVDA-part. Give it a own course so we can learn more» (Good)
- The project was good, but it was difficult to find proper data.» (Good)

- Skip the placket burman. It is good to know that it exists, but there has to be more of both lecturetime and exercises on it if we should really learn it. I think it is better to skip it than to focus more on it. Put more time on experiments with random factors, mixtures or nested design instead.» (fewer)

32. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The project. However it should start a few weeks later in the course and have more time given to it overall. The method of doing the project needs to be explained more clearly. »
- The project»
- The project, Mvda part»
- Everything especially the optimization project..it is a good active learning method. »
- The optimization project should be preserved.»
- The project, the way of presenting the material with the help of many examples»

- Don"t know.»
- Project optimization, very good experience.»
- The course book»
- international students are not familiar to the swedish education system(quarter), in the beginning it"s hard to adapt and with huge amount and quickly given lessons they just confuse!»

33. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- More time on MVDA. »
- More solutions to exercises to give better guidance. We here to learn not supposed to be able to solve every assignment without guidance. »
- In my opinion: 1)The project could be one of the final grading part (20%) 2) Lecture and excercise class should be separate. Inadequate excercise class. »
- I would suggest teaching the course by using the chalk board instead of the power point. »
- Students should have more exercices.»
- More teachers are needed for the projects»
- the quality of the exercise and help during the project»
- The time given to MVDA computer examination. Lessen the topics to be covered and go into more details for those topics.»
- more about regression and MAtlab software»
- More people supervising the project. The supervisors now had to work too hard, and we still seldom could get our questions answered. There were always more questions than time and several times we didn"t get our questions answered at all. Better answers to the questions to "example experimental design" (see additional comments)»
- More teachers in the optimization/experimental design project so that student don´,t have to wait an hour for help.»
- Better exercises. More help (during class) for the project.»
- I suppose the lecture not only from one disipline. »
- How you present what we should know about models. If you hadn"t see the old exames befor you wouldn"t know what to lerarn. The MVDA exame. Today you just strees trohu and don"t really learn or present anything inportent»
- Clearer explanation of examples during lectures.»
- fewer chapters, better pre-info on optimization course, MVDA was good to know but was not totally useful.»
- Not forcing student to work with someone that does not communicate in english»
- More exerciseteachers. Sometimes you must get help.»

34. Additional comments

- The course litterature was not that good. Difficult to read through a lot of information.»
- It is a GREAT course to study.Everything is well-planing.»
- Thanks, great course!»
- To few questions with full answer in the course material. The "Examples Experimental design" often lacked answer or only answered half of the question and newer showed how to solve a problem. When I am working with a problem I might not only need to know the correct answer. (That would be sufficient if I was always doing right) I also need to know where I failed. Also the "last exams" answers are sometimes not full but some calculations are missing. »
- Thank you»
- Location of exam was not clearly informed. Lots of students walked 10 minutes in the wrong direction. The lecture room contained very small tables, especially for an open book exam where a lot of space is required.»
- Don"t change the room for examination with so short notice and write the message in english»
