Genomsnitt: 2.26

- creating control functions for PLC neeeds to be more explored. The last part in the goals.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- Since the students were not able to manage all the four assignments that was planned to be done during the course, it seems that the goals were set too high. » (No, the goals are set too high)

Teaching and course administration

6. To what extent has the teaching been of help for your learning?

16 svarande

Small extent»6 37%
Some extent»6 37%
Large extent»4 25%
Great extent»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 1.87

- I relied on self study mostly.» (Small extent)
- Could be more lessons before hand in 1.» (Some extent)
- More lectures have to be requested. I think the problem is that the student don"t know what they are expected to know then it is hard to request lectures. If the teacher for example suggest reading material and exercises for each week then the stduents will find out what is hard and probably request more lectures which I think will make the course better.» (Some extent)

7. To what extent has the course literature and other material been of help for your learning?

16 svarande

Small extent»1 6%
Some extent»10 62%
Large extent»5 31%
Great extent»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2.25

- Lots of material uploaded or linked to on course web page, which is good but as a student it is hard to know what material that is the most relevant for the course and what is just "read if you are more interested in this".» (Some extent)
- write articles require knowledge» (Large extent)
- reasearch papers seemed very dense to read and learn but overall like lectures and slides helped.» (Large extent)

8. How did you experience the peer-review process?

16 svarande

Not useful.»2 12%
Useful.»10 62%
Very useful.»4 25%

Genomsnitt: 2.12

- Because of 2 reasons: 1- Reviewers didn"t have any experience or a few knowledge about the topics 2- Due to fact 1, Students didn"t care much about the review reports » (Not useful.)
- The process was ok, but the time between deadlines was very short!» (Useful.)
- It gives a clear picture of what other people think is good or not with the report and that does not always coincide with your own thoughts. It is lso useful to read others reports to have some insight in other ways to tackle the problem.» (Useful.)
- Way to many hand-ins.» (Useful.)
- But I miss feedback on the hand ins from the teacher me and my team mate unfortunately did not trust the reviewers that much. » (Useful.)
- sometimes useful» (Useful.)
- It was a good check to see if you actually had understood anything.» (Very useful.)

9. How did you experience the Java programming?

16 svarande

Not useful.»3 18%
Useful.»11 68%
Very useful.»2 12%

Genomsnitt: 1.93

- since it was not the programming course, so giving assignments based on pure java programming was not good. It was ok when it was changed to the reports only, since now you could have focused on learning algorithms rather than investing time and stucking in java as everyone in not the programming expert.» (Not useful.)
- The java hand-in was way too extensive. There must be some kind of lecture or texts that go into the algorithms at least. Scheduled time for consultation was needed. The hand-in was useful for seeing how to implement what otherwise just looked like dots and arrows.» (Useful.)
- But took so much time that we couldn"t do anything properly» (Useful.)
- But we are too bad in programming for starting with hand in 1. A simpler programming assignment should be handed out before Hand in 1.» (Useful.)
- It was great to implement the synthesis calculations. Very useful task. But it was hard and a little bit too time consuming and I think it would be good if the stuents get more guidelines in the beginning. I wish we would have had time to do more implementations of algrorithms because it is a great way of learn things in deep details. But it is very timeconsuming. maybe the students can get some code to start with and then write part of the algorithm on their own.» (Useful.)
- It was useful in some part which you solve your problems with Java but it wasn"t useful to write the Hand-in one. It took too much time to learn.» (Useful.)
- I"m not that great at Java and unfortunantly was the big problem how to implement the supremica classes, this was partly due to my programming skills and partly due to the lack of how it actually works. It would have been good with a smaller task, for example only one part of the synthesis, i.e. we could have gotten the synchronization which would have helped alot to understand how the supremica java classes worked!» (Useful.)
- not so useful that it could have been, more guidlines and people will make it.» (Useful.)

10. What do you think about "on-demand-lectures"?

16 svarande

Not useful.»6 37%
Useful.»9 56%
Very useful.»1 6%

Genomsnitt: 1.68

- Have lectures the regular way! It"s hard to specify what to demand.» (Not useful.)
- I mean the idea is good but the students did not know how to use it so I did not think it worked that well. I realized too late (when I worked with the exercises and read some of the material)that I actually needed to request lectures, but then it was a little bit too late.» (Not useful.)
- I think sometimes the students didn"t know if they need lecture about the topics or no! Lectures are the abstract and fruitful of the teachers experience. The discussion at lectures are very useful. » (Not useful.)
- But still I think it is better to have a clearer structure.» (Useful.)
- I think it"s a good thing but it was implemented a big poorly, it was something a bit hard to understand when you wanted us to do this.» (Useful.)
- but i think more appropriate is the schedule decided before the start of the classes. » (Useful.)

- Hand-ins posted to late.» (Rather badly)
- But for example the fact that I missed one lecture was due to an unclear announcement on the web page.» (Rather well)
- It was some problems with the lecture schema, but other than that good» (Rather well)

- At the beginning enorm, but it became good after the first hand-in.» (Adequate)
- high in the start due hand in 1» (Adequate)
- else it would be too high if programming was there.» (Adequate)
- The load varied a lot. In the beginning I spent almost all my time on hand in 1. In the end the hand ins didn"t take that much time at all.» (High)
- Too high workload with the first hand in. » (High)
- It took me too much time to gather information about various topics and they don"t really help me for exam. Review parts were too much time consuming because you have write something base on good references.» (High)
- It was too high sometimes when it collided with other courses.» (High)
- You can"t have major hand-ins and assignments through the whole period which take up most of your time and then not give any points or grade for it! If there had been no written exam in the course, it would have been ok, but not like this!» (Too high)
- Too meny hand-ins. Especially since they do not give any credits.» (Too high)

- since i was taking only one course so better it can be answered by those who were involved in two or more courses.» (Adequate)
- My second course was an average time-consuming course, but at the same time the start-up of the SCM-project took a lot of time versus the amount of points it generated.» (Too high)
- I took Electric Drives I course and the intro to the SCM design course. That in combination with DECO was a bit too much for me. » (Too high)
- Not only beacuse of this course though.» (Too high)

Summarizing questions

16. What is your general impression of the course?

16 svarande

Poor»3 18%
Fair»0 0%
Adequate»9 56%
Good»4 25%
Excellent»0 0%

Genomsnitt: 2.87

- Nothing was ready when the course started, there was no course-PM, information can sporadic and we still don"t know what exam will be about (13/10). The thought of the course is good, but the course doesn"t help us learn it.» (Poor)
- All the handins were very useful, but it is necessary to organize them in a way that students have time to solve them properly.» (Adequate)
- I had higher expectations on the course, so I"m a little bit disappointed. I started too hard wth the first hand in but then it just went down to zero. It never reached the advance level after the first hadn in 1. Except for on the final exam....» (Adequate)

17. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The reports.»
- Hand in 1 with some easier programming excersize before.»
- The implemnetation part of the hand in 1. It is good.»
- 1- Java programming. Is it really helpful? Are we computer science of software students? yes solving the LP/IP is meaningful but not writing Synthesis which I think took too much time from me and I really can"t get any useful knowledge. 2- Review part. I think we are not in place to judge other reports. I got too much comments that "why don"t you write Preliminaries Part" or "why don"t you follow this or that", is it really a comment? »
- The peer reviewing, but maybe only 3 tasks, it felt like if people stopped caring in the last one, it was much shorter and less well written than the others.»
- peer-review, which is a good way to compare point of views and actually test our knowledge»
- the hand ins are rather good structured (in some sense) - keep them»
- Everything except programing.»

18. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Remove the written exam! Make hand-in 1 more about DES and less about java! Remove the review-parts and focus on actually learning DiscOpt, which isn"t possible now!»
- The course should be structured in a better way.»
- An easier first programming assignmnet. It would be good if the Supremica api was involved in that assignmnet/excersize. Start of with simpler programming. »
- No need for a written examination, grade the hand-ins instead. If the writen examination is needed then remove some hand-ins and add more lectures.»
- Give bonus points or some credits for all the hand ins, they are a very big part of the course! Have some kind of week plan to help the students to do what they are supposed to do and to give inspiration to request lectures.»
- 1- Reports 2- Java programming 3- Peer review»
- The java programming task, how the lectures are to be held(it must be clearer what the students want to learn, i.e. what was requested»
- If more programation arises, the possibility of one selecting his prefered program. At least there should be more programming languages available»
- hand in 1 (of course) perhaps take one more lecture on D.O algorithms»
- lectures can be more organized.some practical task from industry implementing control functions like PLC can be included on the exemption of one or two handin. If the task can be really like a project work, than should contribute to the grades for exam. Teacher should make sure that everyone works on the project by taking a viva or oral exam. »

19. Additional comments

- If plan on starting a new course - ask the students! When the plan for the course was first presented almost every student immediately understood that the workload was out of proportion! Students have many courses and believe it or not - we need spare-time. You can"t come with a new deadline three days before the actual dead-line, etc.»
- Martin Fabian was not interested in the course.»
- I think the best part was assignment. I was perfect when you face a real problem. I suggested instead of reports, reviews and Java parts, try to introduce a good assignments for students. They will get much more advantage from solving problems related to their topics instead of ... --------------------------------------- At the end I just wants to thanks Martin because I know he cares about students and experiencing new ways for learning. Please keep in mind that I just put some comments about the course.»
- It think it was fun to do read this course due to the fact that the lecturer seemed to care a bit more and it was good that he tried something different. I think he could listen a bit more how much a workload some task are, even if you have read the IDES course is it not very probable that you are a master at DES. A small comment is also that everything modular was hard,)»
- The course can be made more practical oriented by introducing some tool level things going in the industry right now rather than focusing only on SCT. The MILP and optimization part and its related assignment was very good in this sense.»
