- At first I was attending the lectures regularly. The slides that were taught during the lectures were prepared very well but the way they were taught was not good. Goals and goal fulfilment

The course syllabus states the course goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the course.

5. How understandable are the course goals?

65 svarande

I have not seen/read the goals»3 4%
The goals are difficult to understand»5 7%
The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer»36 55%
The goals clearly describe what I am supposed to learn»21 32%

Genomsnitt: 3.15

- Since this course was an introductary one, containing a little of many things, the goals are probably difficult to define. It was, and is still, unclear to me if the exam was required if you scored high enough on the project. » (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)
- Course goals were clearer but sometimes it was difficult to find relationship among different topics.» (The goals give some guidance, but could be clearer)

6. Are the goals reasonable considering your background and the number of credits?

Answer this this question and the succeeding one, only if you do know the course goals.

61 svarande

No, the goals are set too low»1 1%
Yes, the goals seem reasonable»53 86%
No, the goals are set too high»7 11%

Genomsnitt: 2.09

- High workload, but I´,m pleased cause I´,ve learned a lot!» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- By doing Project, We knew whole the things. Whithout project we were unable to understand the goals.» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)
- with in 6 or 7 week syudy ,including the project goals of course were too high. There was only time problem. » (No, the goals are set too high)

7. Did the examination assess whether you have reached the goals?

No, not at all»4 6%
To some extent»28 45%
Yes, definitely»11 18%
I don"t know/have not been examined yet»18 29%

Genomsnitt: 2.7

- Exam and the course seemed totally different.» (No, not at all)
- I am yet to take the written examination. So, far the project quiz and the exercises have been good to understand the basics.» (To some extent)
- The quiz of the project was supposed to have reflected the project itself and our progress, instead it was a simple general knowledge quiz. This means that two of our useless, do-nothing group members passed where they definetely should not have.» (To some extent)
- The examination was much harder than the practice exams that were handed out.» (To some extent)
- The examination was very different from all the exercises and the project that we had in the course. The examination should be similar to the exercises. » (To some extent)
- the exam had a higher difficulty compared to earlier exams/exercises handed out » (Yes, definitely)
- but again the exam was too tough even the concepts and material taught was clear but the exam question involved much more practice of solving it rather than just understanding it» (Yes, definitely)
- The exam was harder than expected.» (I don"t know/have not been examined yet)

- I think the lecturers have not any practical experience of teaching. I expect more experienced teacher at least for the introductory courses.» (Small extent)
- The teaching was not so helpful to learn new concepts and it was because of simply "SLIDE READING" of the lectures by the course staff except the exercises. The lecturers just read out the things in a general way rather than a detailed one.» (Small extent)
- Teachers shuld explain and speak the topic in a simple way. There was also a problem regarding, to give the exasct guid line to student how he should think and learn the topic. » (Small extent)
- The exercises were the most helpful part of the course» (Some extent)
- Erik Agrell, come back please !! :D I feel, that it would be difficult to use someone else"s slides for teaching the class. As it can only be the author who can explain every point that is presented in the slide !!!» (Some extent)
- The order of teaching different parts could be better. As is, some crucial information and examples (for example regarding the I/Q concept and orthogonality in general) was very unclear for quite a few lectures.» (Some extent)
- I appreciate that the teaching aims at understanding rather than drowning the students in details. And is good as is.» (Some extent)
- The lectures didn’,t teach us much. They gave us knowledge what we should read and learn.» (Some extent)
- Teaching was not too much helpful to understand whole things. Lecturers were unable to give explanation on several topics.» (Some extent)
- In learning Matlab the teaching has not been helpful... so it´,s "only" large extent for me. =)» (Large extent)

- Slides were good. Haven"t read the book much.» (?)
- Frankly, speaking, the recommended book seems to talk at a high level. While most of us are still learning this subject. There are so many other great books that were not recommended as the main course book !! Makes me wonder why ! I use other books whose english is much easier to understand and to the point. » (Small extent)
- I do not like the book by Anderson. » (Small extent)
- Extremely theoretical and has limited help with the practical parts of the course (and, let"s face it - the application of this course is entirely practical!)» (Some extent)
- We use other books for study in this course, because this book has many difficulty in language and sequence, it was not easy to understand. It is need to be change. Thanks to google search and wikipedia.» (Some extent)

- The exam was totally different from the exercise and lectures. I think proper guidelines were not provided by the TAs. » (Small extent)
- too fast » (Some extent)
- The exercises, on the paper, were good. Some of the exercises (with the TA) were really bad. Some of them were giving us a few minutes to solve the one or two exercise tasks ourselves. We didn’,t learn anything. Some of them were good when the TA explained and thought us what he did and why when he solved a couple of tasks.» (Some extent)
- The exercises are particularly good.» (Large extent)
- Alex was very pedagogic and explained the different subjects in a good way.» (Large extent)
- No exercises» (Large extent)
- The exercises were good but there were too many tasks. It would be better to pick out the most relevant ones. » (Large extent)
- These were good but should be twice and after the lecture » (Large extent)
- Exercises were realy helpful to understand the concepts. The exercises were interesting and they created Curiosity to solve these tasks.» (Large extent)
- Exercises seem to be the only way we have actually learnt something. As someone once quoted, "In theory, theory and practicals are same, but in practice they are not." The project work, was simple but was very confusing as not all that is in theory was needed to demonstrate it. At times, felt like there was a disconnect with exercises and lectures !» (Great extent)

11. To what extent did the project help you learn about ...

Matrisfråga

- I have worked for 5+ years !! and I wanted something different. As I have already been through this real-life development project. But, it is always good for the youngsters who will be entering the industry. I had an interesting time with my fellow classmates :) For me, the only real learning was the receiver design :) felt good, to see that what was studied makes sense.»
- Altough we couldnt do the project but i have learnt a great deal about communication system.»
- Was already well skilled in teamworking. Dysfunctional group made real-life connection very unclear.»
- Very high workload on the project, but very good for understanding indeed.»
- Considering the skill sets and diversity of a real life project team Vs the simulated project team few aspects are very similar but the motive and drive are quite varied nevertheless it is a good learning experience.»
- very interesting»
- The time was really too little for the fulfillment of the job.»
- The project had great potential, it really did. It was, unlike other courses, rather open ended and allowed for a lot of freedom in the design, excellent! The huge pitfall of this course component was the organization. Because we were emulating some sort of company organization, we were not allowed to contact any lecturer directly, but instead had a buerocracy put in the way, making the effort contacting someone in a position of power take longer than it should. A company can get away with organization in this way simply because it is a company, a project in a course can not. Should we have worked for an actual company, one of our group members would have been immediately fired or never even hired for incompetence, while another would have been fired for incompetence and negligence (Really, how can you get into this programme if you lack a basic understanding of filters or what a fourier transform is?). This never happened of course, because you cannot get "fired" from a course. All in all, the project turned into a time consuming nightmare for the two of us doing any work because the work load got shifted badly, without us beeing able to do anything about it.»
- The project is so exhaustive that I had to struggle to find time for my other course and for studying for this course. As a result, my performance in both is not good. If the teachers provide some more hints for project during lectures and exercises, a balance can be maintained between the project and studies for this and other courses. »
- Was a bit too dysfunctional to reflect a well run real-life project.»
- The project was really good and it helped me a lot to improve my technical as well as my team working skills. The idea to work in a group with people from different backgrounds was brilliant and it was helpful in learning the practical team working aspects»
- That is a great but time schdule including study is very tight.»
- I want to say that the project is rather bad. Not the because of the content, but the way to do the project. First, four person come to be a group, but there are always some people who"re just doing nothing but sitting there, sometimes even did not appear, while others struggle in the project.Their reasons are always "sorry, I do not quite understand!". In the end , these person can also get a very high grade without much effort, if their groupmate have done a very well project. It is very unfair to the rest of our classmates.»
- The project was the best project I have had at Chalmers. It was almost as close as an academic project can be an industrial project. »
- This is the thing that I have enjoyed very much. I have learnt lot of things by doing this project. The project took lot of my time and my theory also suffered due to the project.»

- I did my part of the work during the entire time. The rest of my group seems to have left much to the last minute.» (No)
- worked on the project during the whole period» (No)
- Did not postpone work. But somehow, most of the work was in the last week. Perhaps because things began to get clearer only towards the end. Once again, had we been provided with hints here and there, a lot of time-waste and re-doing could have been avoided. And a balance between studies and project could have been maintained. » (No)
- Although tweaking and integration together with major redesign for speed affected last weeks schedule.» (No)
- We spent 25/h per person on this course including the project work but it turned out that this wasn"t sufficient. We spent too much time during the last week because of this.» (No)

- We suffered of "almost finished sydrome"» (?)
- All of the three first alternatives: I didn"t know how to begin. I didn"t know how hard it was. I needed more theoretical knowledge first.» (I didn"t know how to begin.)
- varied skill set (some very new to matlab)..... clear task allocation(and deadlines) were missing .... so team members were waiting for some one to take the lead and also responsibility.» (Other reason (please explain in comments below).)
- The system design was completed rather early in the project, which meant that implementation in matlab was the only real component left. The problems turned up when two of us had to pick up more and more work that should have been completed by other group members.» (Other reason (please explain in comments below).)
- Other group members were not interested. I had to complete it alone.» (Other reason (please explain in comments below).)
- More direct guidlines are required to be able to finish the project within the time frame.» (Other reason (please explain in comments below).)

- This project was fun :) especially, when we had to work together in such a short duration, hardly knowing each other. I prefer this, as more ideas are exchanged when working with others than just working alone in the lab with step by step instructions.» (The type of project used in this course.)
- As long as adequate examples are provided, this is far superior. But the amount of deliverables was way too high for such a small project - it took too much administrative time.» (The type of project used in this course.)
- Quite an experience and quite a relief!! --> when it works.» (The type of project used in this course.)
- Its always fun to really try do to develop something and be creative based on the teached theory.» (The type of project used in this course.)
- but with some labs in the beginning to ease the project» (The type of project used in this course.)
- The freedom of this project is what made it so very interesting, please don"t change this!» (The type of project used in this course.)
- I think it was good to compare different ways of solving the task in the beginning. But a lot of things were unclear during the rest of the project. I think the project should be a bit more like the traditional lab but in that sense only with a description of all parts that have to be implemented.» (The type of project used in this course.)
- -The project could have been broken up into smaller segments. For example for one week all groups should have completed their modulator. Second week their channel encoder, etc. etc.» (The type of project used in this course.)
- I think if we have steps, we learn more, and faster. It also leaves time for experimenting with outcomes later on. » (A traditional lab project with step-by-step instructions.)

Please stop the politically correct racist (Yes, intentionally placing one member of each ethnicity in every group is based on race and thus racist) group assignments and allow us to form groups for ourselves.» (Very poorly)
- Talked to the TA about our problems, nothing happened. The cooperation was very good with one teammate and very poor with the other two. - The workload had been a little high if the teamwork had been good.» (Too high)
- The study load was too high because we have to do lot of things in parallel. Due to this reason my theory suffered alot.» (Too high)

- Could be better!» (Fair)
- The project was really fun but I must say that I"m a bit disappointed on how the exam turned out. It didn"t have anything in common with the questions that we performed during the exercises or the practice exams. I"m not saying that the questions should be the same but some guidence, especially since this is an introduction course. And it is so bad that people that were lucky to get a good project group were able to pass the exam even though they didn"t score well on the actual exam. » (Fair)
- Faculties of the course should be more experianced and should have the ability to make the course more understandable to student. The project instructions should be more clear. The exercises that done by TA should be near relavent to the problems of exam. » (Adequate)
- good chance to give a overview of the communication engineering, but too brief and a too rough project» (Adequate)
- Cources were very nice and according to need of this Communication Program.» (Adequate)
- The project was a big part of the course and the project was the best project I have had at Chalmers. It was almost as close as an academic project can be an industrial project. There are a few things that always will be different in an academic project and an industrial project. Those are money, 8 hours work day, individual grading etc. Many students do not complain about other students and there are no way one person can learn the names of about 100 students and learn about the work each of the student does in the project. Therefore the grading of the project was really unfair. Guessing when grading the project is not a good way. All the parts that are graded must be graded in a fair way. It should not depend of whether the TA has been able or not able to find out the right information about the different groups.» (Good)
- In the project i learn a lot. But lectures were not very helpful.» (Excellent)

23. What should definitely be preserved to next year?

- The project was challenging and useful. It gave a much better understanding of the topic.»
- Exercises»
- The project scheme»
- This kind of project (i.e. real work simulation) was, in my view, a good idea.»
- Alex, Erik Agrell, projects and more time dedicated for exercies.»
- Although the structure of the course is so exellent but our course teacher is not experienced one. So we had a lot of problem. When got admited here i hoped to get knowledge from a exerienced professor or may be atleast from a experienced lecturer. But i think the course was designed with practical situation. But we are disappointed only about the course teacher. But rest of the course designe is really very good.»
- The project, external lecturers»
- forming group»
- project with less difficulty and time constraint»
- project style & abundant introductions»
- The exercises»
- projects, exercises»
- project»
- the project and the exercise forms»
- the teacher should provide some printed materials to student. such as the course content»
- The project»
- project, but modified»
- exercise class.»
- The project.»
- Alex"s help. The project.»
- The freedom of the project component. There are far to few labs of this kind at Chalmers.»
- The project.»
- The structure with 2 companies and the real world simulation.»
- Everything»
- This type of project but with a better distribution of the group. Some groups had several members with no knowledge in Matlab and poor skills in communication theory.»
- Project»
- The project. :)»
- Project is OK»
- Project is very good. »
- 01. Project 02. Team Working »
- the exercises n project bt vid some more clearity n help from instructors.»
- Most of the content. The project in general.»
- Project»
- Only good teachers»
- The project. How even change the subject totally.»
- project»
- -The project, however it should be modified so that more groups are able to complete it»
- The project.»
- The project.»
- I think overall course experience was not bad. The project and its way of working and organizing should definitely be preserved to next year. Also the exercise sessions were very helpful. »
- just teachign efforts should be put in the class room and students should be kept on trac through such efforts because much time is wasted in finding answers to different question that arises in a fresh mind.»
- 01: Project 02: Workshop at Ericsson 03: Guest Lecturer »

24. What should definitely be changed to next year?

- Requirements for the course should include the ability to write a report properly, and having worked in project teams before.»
- Failing the quiz= failing the project. »
- I don"t know»
- Book !!! Better and simpler book !!! I get the feeling that the book was translated from another language !! Have to re-read quite a lot as to what is been said in the book.»
- I think next, the course book and the format of the project should be changed. you should give more hints about the project because there are lots of people from different background.»
- Order of information on lectures (a more top-down approach is better (in my opinion) for introduction courses), more practical examples to tie into the project. Borrow problems and examples from the project work for lectures. Matlab intro, because some students didn"t seem to know it at all.»
- forming group»
- practical lab work with communication tools»
- few lab room availables»
- To give more help in Matlab coding»
- Could include dissecting real world challenges and solutions that were used. And some exposure (not study!!)to actual communication setups (like in ISP, cellular nwks)»
- exercices more precise about the answers To spend more time maybe It"s too fast»
- the teamwork should be changed into fewer people and prolong the working time.»
- Teachers should be changed....Johan and patric did a reasonable job but some good teacher could do a lot better than both of them. Alex was a great source of help through out the course.»
- Explain more details on the topics in class»
- project, but modified»
- the schedule of handing report.»
- The stupid quiz or the impact of the project result on the total score. The book.»
- The project has one problem. It take little time to design and implement and it takes far too long to debug and test. The consequence is that we cannot spend time learning communication systems. »
- The lectures.»
- The project was perfect but very time-consuming. »
- Project workframe. Stop trying to emulate a company workplace when it clearly cannot work.»
- Maybe the project could be shiftet to the 2nd quarter of the first Master"s year. It"s too time-spending for foreigners who like to discover Göteborg and Sweden, too, in the beginning of their stay.»
- nothing»
- The exam had several questions based on probability calculation but in the course there was not a lot of stuff on that.»
- Lectures, not well prepared»
- Something could be done to make the project easier. So that workload reduces and so that we have time for other courses too. »
- Exercise course didn"t match the lecture very well...»
- Instead of Quiz viva should be taken. Because those who came late for the quiz knew about the quiz from those coming out of class after their quizzes.»
- 01. Teaching Staff except those who conducted the exercise sessions 02. Text Book»
- obviously the teachers.»
- There are lots of documents to read. Try to make them synchronized and clear.»
- Lecturers,The project is so very much time consuming and the reward of the project is too low.At leadt thoes who have completed the project should be give passing marks.»
- Course instructor.»
- Unnecessary burden of projects there should be the projects or exams. If these are necessary than in small ratio. »
- the project was very good but it needs more introduction from teachers ,and also I think if more teaching session is held befor project, students would get better results .»
- Faculties of the course should be more experianced and should have the ability to make the course more understandable to student.»
- Change the way to do the project. Change the evaluation way of each people in the project. The quiz of project has too many percents in the grade. I think how to do and what you have done in the project are much more important instead of the quiz.»
- exam»
- Better organization, all the teachers in the project must be informed about the changes that are done in the project. The rules that are in the project memo and course memo must be kept and they must be fair. To fail a student with a lot of knowledge because a randomly chosen student in the group fails is crazy. That rule was fortunately changed but not informed to everyone (to all teachers and all students) in the project and the project memo was never updated. The examination rule was changed so it only depended of your own knowledge. It was changed so that everyone that got less than 50% on the quiz would fail the project but the other students that had 50% or more were still able to pass if they got a good enough result in the project task. If you do not intend to follow the rules do not have them! Use only things that you can grade fairly. Do not try to grade things you have no chance of getting enough information about. Team working skills was graded without enough information for many groups. At least the ones I have spoken with. To learn enough about around 25 groups or 100 students in a few weeks is almost impossible. »
- not start the both subject in one term »
- The way of teaching the slides should definitely be changed. »
- 01: Text Book 02: Study Load »

25. Additional comments

- The MATLAB introduction course was not adequate in order to work on this project. Even with individual work and studying, if there is no previous background it is very hard to implement the project.»
- no»
- Additional questions regarding student background could be informative for you (I have evaluated other master courses, so I know) - don"t just assume everyone is first-year MPCOM!»
- not given enough time to syudy for the final exam after lots of pressure in the Project»
- For the project we can only use one method design a communication system(for example,we use FSK), and other methods which we have not associated are not very familiar.»
- could include lectures on real world communication problems and case studies.»
- no»
- Project offered during this course was a very excellent way of conveying knowledge. Teachers patric and johan should have taught more deeply rather than just going through every topic.I strongly felt that all lectures given by both of them, were of no great help regarding the understanding of the course.»
- I think the grading is fair, if you really have done a lot of work on the project you should get much extra points for the exam.»
- more directions about how to pass exam.»
- Without any prior knowledge this type of project is really hard for us. So, I suggest to give some theoretical knowledge to the students before the start of the project.»
- There was not enough time for preparing for written examination. I think it is better that we have more time before examination. »
- One problem with the project was that you could indeed get a good score on that part of the course (25 in my case) and still not have a clue about the theory behind (I"ll be VERY surprised if I scored above 10 on the exam). The project gave a good understanding of the different problems that appear when designing a communication system, but no theory. I put much more time into the project, and my lack of understanding of the theoretic part will probably cost me in later courses.»
- none»
- During the exam, some students in HC room right hand talked to each other all the time and very loud. But the exam lady did not stop them. I donot think it is a good beginning for this program.»
- Give more introduction of some important formular, like ,Q,function....how it comes out? »
- These comments are for the improvements in the academic and professional environment at Chalmers and I don"t have any personal issues with any of the course staff so this is what I perceived and these comments should not be taken personal against anybody. I hope that the positive comments will be considered for the betterment of this course»
- Instructors were not elaborative in the lectures. Course slides, material should have been more elaborative and with examples.Just showing the equations snd graphs is not a big deal. What is happening inside those equations and graphs, that is important for us to know.»
- The exam questions should be qualitiful rather to make it difficult to student. The course book should be more understandable.»
- add more superwisers in the final examinations to avoid some unhappy things.»
- The exam and the exercises should at least have something in common.»
- subject are the good it was so tuff, but the teaching way is not good just running the power point slide and show the student i am teaching.it is reason that mostly student are not able to get good grade.it is the reason to fail mostly student.»
- Excercise"s time period should be increased in next year.»
