Goals and goal fulfilment

The programme syllabus states the goals in terms of learning outcomes, i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes to be acquired by the student during the education. The learning outcomes are (excerpts):

After the master programme in Automotive Engineering the students should be able to

•,,,,,,,, identify and discuss vehicles as complex systems from a technical and a social perspective through a broad platform in automotive engineering.

•,,,,,,,, analyse new technical challenges and to create technical advancements in the automotive industry by three specialisation tracks, Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics or Safety.

•,,,,,,,, synthesize and evaluate automotive systems and products in terms of direct use and lifecycle analysis through consideration of environmental and economic aspects.

•,,,,,,,, through applications and practice
o utilize automotive related IT- and product development tools.
o demonstrate skills necessary for managing and contributing to team-based engineering activities and projects in a multi-cultural environment.

- some course contained subjects beyond the AE program scope: hybrids had lectures on control theory, when automotive engineer only needs to know then purpose and function of it not the details taught in control technics program Passive safety was an anatomy course rather than passive safety. Most of the subject was about human body no the vehicles and safty equipment. which was boring and not needed for engineers. we all already know the basic knowledge in anatomy» (Yes, the goals seem reasonable)

- The additional courses are needed to get a deeper understanding than you get by only taking the first six mandetory ones. » (To some extent)
- Regarding automotive IT-tools, I think that the course Advanced Vehicle Dynamics put far too much emphasis on Matlab use: the assignment were 80% about programming. The usage of real-world software implemented by the industry such as MSC Adams for example would have been so more interesting for us. This is definitly a problem at Chalmers, since lots of others mechanical engineering courses are all about matlab programming. » (Almost)
- All the goals have been a part of the masters programme, except the last one now that the project is optional. The majority of the class have been a part of a large multi-cultural project though (eco-marathon, formula student etc.) but not all.» (Almost)
- "synthesize and evaluate automotive systems and products in terms of direct use and lifecycle analysis through consideration of environmental and economic aspects." this goal is not really fulfilled» (Almost)
- I think you have to be quite interested in the area and seek information on your own time to really fulfill the goals. » (Almost)

Programme layout

The Automotive Engineering programme consists of one introduction course about automotive vehicles and industry followed by 3 courses, one from each of the areas of Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics and Safety. Last two mandatory courses are chosen from 2 of the 3 areas. Depending on preferences, the student can then take two extra courses within one or two of the specialisations.

- Poor information of what courses you could take from other programs. Tried to do other courses but wasn"t allowed, but afterwards it was clear to me that it wouldn"t be a problem.» (Rather poor)
- Advanced ICE and Advanced Vehicle Dynamics should not be on the same quarter: too much work. Instead, one should be put on Q3 and the other on Q4 to split the difficulty. » (OK)
- Passive Safety should not be one of the first four mandatory course» (OK)
- But you could make the first four courses a bit more advanced.» (OK)
- I find it quite strange that you can become a master of science in automotive engineering with just 6 courses from the AE programme (the case when you don"t choose any of the three tracks). It is meant that you get a general degree, but I strongly question how much the person really know about automotive engineering with just these courses.» (Good)
- It"s good since the student first must know something from all the three main areas in automotive industry: safety, dynamics and powertrain. Then you can make a choice of what to specialize in.» (Good)
- It should be more practical parts» (Good)

- I think that more courses are needed to be able to say that you are an automotive engineer.» (No, not at all)
- Safety course should not be mandatory, or completely redesign. We learned more about anatomy than vehicle safety. Should be in the safety track. Intro to auto engineering should also be redesigned, and cover more modelling and simulation practice and less powerpointsucking lectures. Intro to simulink would fit very nice in this course!! » (To a certain extent, yes)
- An engineer should always know more...» (To a large extent, but not completely)
- A lot of the master thesises offered by automotive companies requires the skills of FEM. A course in FEM should perhaps not be mandatory but at least available to study during the master. All the FEM courses are today in lp2, where the master programme"s courses are all mandatory.» (To a large extent, but not completely)

- general modelling and simulation and some control theory. The course in modelling and simulation could very well be incorporated into AE instead of the extremely poor hybrid course. Sven actually told us that this year was just a test so that he would find out what should be in the course, that is totally unacceptable!!» (Yes)
- Brake Systems and limited Information about the commercial side of automotive industry» (Yes)
- It should be an option to be able to study FEM.» (Yes)
- I miss the ability to learn about fuel cells and a more advanced course in hybrids» (Yes)
- An elecronically course.. ita getting more importent in vehicles» (Yes)
- The whole program is too focused on cars. Why are the so little applications on heavy trucks, buses or contruction equipment?» (No)
- Bara mer tillämpningsbara saker i kurserna. (No)

11. Are there any courses that you think should either be heavily revised or even removed from the programme?

- biology stuff in passive safety course should be revised somehow. » (Yes)
- Safety course, intro to AE, hybrid course» (Yes)
- Road Vehicles Aerodynamics should be heavily revised. Lectures and slides given by the lecturer are extremly poor: he was just talking loosely about specific vehicle designs, e.g.: "see this nice/terrible aerodynamic design". More scientific content and real physical explanations would suit way better because students want to be engineers and not marketers.» (Yes)
- Passive Safety for its workload and its relevance regarding to what is expecting a student who chooses the Automtive Engineering program, and Vehicle Aerodynamics for its content (here the workload is very light, and I would have wish to go deeper)» (Yes)
- The Advanced Vehicle Dynamics Course should be revised in terms of heavy mathematical calculations. The Engineering projects course should be in corporation with companies.» (Yes)
- The Passive safety course was a big disapointment. Maybe this course could be set as an extra course and the active safety course could be the mandatory. That would be much better in my opinion.» (Yes)
- Passive safety course is very boring. It"s more a biology course.» (Yes)
- Passive Safety. Var ju en biologikurs!» (Yes)
- internal combustion advanced course is too close to the prime movers one» (Yes)
- Hybrid vehicles & Controls - revised» (Yes)

PT mechanics - Ostrukturerad men bra inlämningsuppgifter.
- But if you´,re gonna remove something, remove the intro-course.» (No)

- Lab and field experiments were very interesting in general. Advanced vehicle dynamics content was far too ambitious: too many concepts to learn... Rob Thomson was an invaluable teacher and made the courses Vehicle Dynamics and Measurement Techniques in Automotive Applications almost perfect.»
- I have not attended all specialisation courses. »

NOTE! Only answer this question if you attended all 4 mandatory courses in the Safety specialisation (Passive Safety, Active Safety, Human Aspects of Traffic Safety, Measurement Techniques in Automotive Applications).
What is your impression of the

Matrisfråga

- Mats is a very good lecturer and the safety specialization gave a nice overview regarding automotive safety. However, the workload should be greater in Active Safety and Human Aspects. May be Mats could do as Rob did in Measurement techniques for automotive applications, i.e replacing the final exams (that were quite easy) by quizzes each week or second week, in order to force students to study a little bit harder. Passive Safety examination was way too harsh: it is quite frustrating to learn a lot about a course content and then obtain... grade 3.»
- The applications are limited except the passive safety course.»
- I have not attended all specialisation courses. »

- Vehicle Dynamics assignments required some very basic matlab knowledge. Students just needed to implement programs and then, think with their head about how to mechanically interprete the results: that was interesting. But Advanced Vehicle Dynamics computer assignments were all about programming and programming: that was not interesting at all. People that had their bachelor degree at Chalmers did not have any problems to deal with that, but others yes.» (Poor)
- I had some problems about the MatLab software which is popular at the program. There should be a more detailed matlab course at the beginning of the programme which focuses on coding (not plotting etc.) and at least for 1 quarter. The selective Matlab course is not sufficient for the programme.» (Rather poor)
- Since many of us are amateurs in matlab and haven"t gotten an education in it, it"s not fair to assume that the student should be good with this. Make sure all the students know matlab!» (Rather poor)

(OK)
- Too few courses to choose from! I want to see courses in product development connected to the automotive industry etc. Not only calculations and calculations, over and over again...» (Good)
- Interesting courses!» (Very good)

(No)
- ohyes!» (Yes)
- The narket for work oppurtunities has changed since last time» (I do not know)
- I thought that this master programme would be more connected to the industy with some product development courses etc. » (I do not know)

28. What should definitely be preserved?

- some teachers (specially in powertrain track)»
- Good combinations of practical and theoretical studies. »
- veh. dynamics courses and auto primemover course»
- Chalmers Formula Student»
- The Stora Holm applications, the Passive safety applications, Eco Marathon, Formula Student and all type of applications.»
- Sven - he is great! And the combustion engine course and the hybrid course.»
- Good that all mandatory courses are in the beginning so it makes it easier to make an exchange semester at another univeristy in the end of the master program.»
- The Powertrain and the Vehicle Dynamics courses, particularly Internal Combustion Engine and Vehicle Dynamics, should be preserved. These courses are rewarding and well structured. Moreover the teachers master their field.»
- the program itself and the labs»
- Vehicle Dynamics courses, Internal combustion courses»
- The specializations»
- free tee shirts with automotive eng. logo»
- guest lectures, good teachers.»

29. What should definitely be changed?

- - less matlab pure programming, more real engineering softs. - road vehicle aerodynamics course: less loosy considerations, more engineering content.»
- There should be a fair master thesis announcement system. The master thesis announcements were not conducted to whole programme regularly. The company proposals should be announced from Student Portal or mail system. »
- The passive safety course and the selection of extra courses to choose from.»
- Most of the courses have the same layout and methods of learing, which makes it quite boring after some courses. »
- The Introduction to Automotive Engineering course should be changed. This is like a "shop" where you can find everything but useless. To pass the exam you just have to learn by heart the Powerpoint slides which is not particurlarly rewarding.»
- the program organizing»
- Se över och strukturer upp gästföreläsare!»
- Hybrid and Control should be modified as well as Road vehicle aerodynamics (more practical work and less not really useful lectures for both of them)»
- maybe not definitely, but the programme could be made a bit more advanced.»
- some mid term quizes or small examinations should be added in all cpurses which would help to keep student in shape and force them to review covered material more often. this would raise overall student academic level»
- safety track»
- Safety, hybrid, intro to AE. Workload could definitely be higher and more theoretical on all courses.

30. Additional comments

- People taking the formula student spent more time on that and still passed the courses with good grades, that´,,s great, but it definitely says something about the difficulty of this master.»
- The eco marathon and formula student projects are very useful. However, the criteria to select the formula students is not clear and was not announced at all.The list of formula students who were selected for the project was announced and nobody knew why they were eliminated . Moreover, the percentage of swedish students and foreign students who were rejected from the formula student project should be researched. If the swedish students are more talented for the formula student, what is the criteria to detect that decision? The form that is filled for the application is insufficient to detect the "talented" students. That form should be revised and investigated in terms of selecting students. »
- more accessibility to labs and student"s own ideas should be encouraged.»
- Overall it has been good and a very nice experience studying in a different country, meeting new people and have learnt quite a bit.»
